Hello, just got accepted off the waitlist to Kaiser today. I’m currently PTE’d at UTHSC which is my state school. I’m really torn between the two and would like opinions on which ones.

Kaiser
Pros:
-Free tuition plus a $36,000 a year stipend. I’m from a relatively not well off background and this means a lot
-Pasadena looks amazing and LA offers a diverse community compared to TN
-Small class size could potentially mean a more intimate experience with the faculty and other students
-Connected with a large healthcare system
Cons:
-Very far from family. Have never lived on my own before.
-Uncertainty about new school that hasn’t had a class match yet.
-Have heard from one professor at my school that Kaiser has an awful reputation and that I would most likely be required to work in a Kaiser hospital after Graduation (don’t know if this is true)

UTHSC
Pros:
-closer to home and more familiar
-more established school that is involved all around the state
-cheaper location with a lot more affordable rent than LA
-scholarship that covers half tuition
Cons:
-about 120-160k more expensive when factoring in living costs
-School isn’t ranked too high when factoring in prestige when comparing the two
-Memphis isn’t as exciting compared to LA

Kaiser. There is no work requirement. Kaiser the institution is unpopular for some reasons that are worth looking into but the med school has a relatively untarnished new rep. I would take the plunge and do something new!

Pasadena, CA is a great place to live. Kaiser is free. You're living the dream, IMO.
