Kansas Class of 2014!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm with you AnimeVet, Kansas was my last little glimmer of hope.

Does anyone know if in previous years, when they "called a significant amount of the alternates" like my email says from Marci Ritter, that they had SO many seats filled this early in the game???????

The stress is sickening isn't it.

We will hang in there together 😀

Yup, they had the class "filled"--but waitlist musical chairs means that people in the class are called off the waitlist at their IS or more desirable school (for whatever reason) and they cancel their spot at Kansas, thus opening up a spot for a waitlister...who has likely already committed somewhere else, too...so then they move down the list...keeps going on and on. The photos on that site will change quite frequently!

Hang in there!! good luck!! :xf: :luck:

THANKS for clearing that up for me alliecat44!!!!

Well, if they need some music to help along their process of musical alternate chairs, I have a stocked iTunes ready to go.

Also, I could look into a lotto tumbler...

haha....awesome! Maybe we could nudge the lotto tumbler in our favor...perhaps? 😉

I could definitely throw our names in a couple extra times... 🙄

Broke my heart, too! 👎
I got the same email, hopefully we'll hear more in the next couple of months.
Best of luck to both of us and all waitlisters! :luck::xf:

I called Kansas before class last night (also before the e-mail) to ask if the list was moving at all, and I was told letters were being mailed out this week to alternates. I thought maybe that meant this year they were sending out letters instead of calling to offer spots...unitl I got the e-mail. anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up that you might be getting something in snail mail from KSU soon, and although i think it would be WONDERFUL if some of those were acceptences, I think they're likely just hard copy of what we were told in the e-mail, so don't have a heartattack when you see then envelope (which i know i would, if i wasn't expecting it).
rtoddo09 - I hope michigan works out for you!!!

Hi guys,
I hate to be the bearer of even more disheartening news but I figured I ought to say. I called this morning and talked to Marcina Ritter. She said currently Dr Elmore feels that it is "highly unlikely" that any of the alternate list is going to be needed this year BUT that they will keep it "active" until August just in case.
I don't know....but I'm trying to possibly take finding this information out so early to be a positive thing in having more time to work on my next cycle's application if I do decide to reapply.
GOOD LUCK everyone...maybe your other schools will come through and Kansas just "wasn't meant to be" (thats what I am telling myself anyway)🙂

😡 🙁 This is really really surprising to me, especially after they went through the entire waitlist last year. Completely bizarre!!!

I'm still looking for a roommate, too, so if any of you get in off the waitlist and need a place to live, let me know!

I've got my fingers crossed for you guys...!! :xf:

I just withdrew my position at KSU. Hopefully it will help move the wait-list. Good luck everyone. :luck::xf:

I agree, I didn't get a call until June last year, some of my classmates were called as late as August. :luck:

Hello future first years! I've already posted this on your 2014 FB page and on the vet housing page, but I thought I'd cover all by bases 🙂

I'm looking for a roommate(male or female) to share a 3 bedroom, 1 bath house that I own starting this summer or fall. The house is located about 2 miles from the vet school in a quiet neighborhood. Rent is $300/month and half of the utilities which would be between $100 and $150/month. I would prefer no cats/dogs as I already have one of each, but I am open to allowing other pets. The house has a decent size fenced backyard and a garage(being used for storage now). I'll also be a 2nd year, so you would have access to all of my first year books. If you're interested, just send me an e-mail, [email protected], or call at 785-313-2906 for more info.

I also have a horse boarded locally, so feel free to call/e-mail if you have questions about local equestrian facilities!
Enjoy your summer!

I have worked with horses on-and-off since I was 8, and I miss them very much when silly things like lack of money or location get in the way... which is, unfortunately, a lot of the time in the past few years. I'm hoping to find some equine opportunities around Manhattan, but I have no idea where to start looking. I have done the groom/farmhand arrangement in exchange for horse time, and I would enjoy that again if I had the time and the opportunity. I also enjoy simply brushing or doing groundwork with a horse that needs more attention. Basically, anything to spend time with the horses.

Are there are current KSU students on here who have suggestions for horse opportunities in the area?

Hi Class of 2014, CONGRATULATIONS 😀 on your acceptance in K-State's CVM Program. For anyone who might be looking for housing, I wanted to let you know of an option. My house is a 1420 sqft 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house in the northeast corner of Manhattan. It is only a 5 minute drive to the vet school. This is not your typical college-style housing, its a really nice house! Amenities include: washer/dryer, dishwasher, large great room with vaulted ceilings, gas fireplace, large closet, fenced yard with covered patio, two car garage (a spot may be available). The room is currently furnished with a queen sized bed and side table should you need them, otherwise they will be easy to take out if you don’t. You would be living with two awesome (or at I think we are second year veterinary students. Message me here or email [email protected]. Just think, living with us would save you at least $500+ plus a semester by borrowing our books instead of buying! If you don’t need housing and just have a question about the school, Manhattan, or need tips on how to move across the country, just send me a message. I’d be glad to help.

I just got the information packet, and I'm reading through descriptions of the electives. Current students, do you have any suggestions? Also, what are online courses (such as Trade and Agricultural Health) like? Would it be unwise to take 4 credit hours of electives rather than three? Thoughts?

I took Trade & Ag, I liked it. It was straightforward, had a little historical element to it, and the material is very easy. There are some group projects, but even those are handled online.

I also took Cognates & Etymology, which is crazy easy but not the most stimulating thing in the world.

If you take 4 credits in the Fall you still have to take 2 in the Spring, I asked this same question. So it does you no good to pay the extra tuition for an extra credit.

Most of the electives are really easy, they set them up that way so as not to take away from your main courses. The exception is Neuro in the Spring which I thought was still really difficult even after it was scaled back from a full course, but many vets and upper classmates said it was a good idea to take to prepare for future courses.

Ok. so I finally drove home to look at the packet ksu sent us.. I cant help but notice the little excerpt they have about our "dress code" ... or our suggested dress code that is ... I have always been a shirt, sweater, jeans type of girl and I was wondering if this is strictly enforced... If it is then i have a crap load of shopping to do! lol

Any first years/soon to be 2nd years wanna offer any insight on this topic? It may seem minor but to me, anything dressier then a pair of jeans causes for a lil anxiety...

Don't worry about it. Everyone will dress up for like the first week....then its jeans and tshirts and sweatshirts all the time. Plenty of people will even wear shorts and flip flops if we're just sitting in lecture all day.

A hint to those of you who have not had your rabies vaccination: check with your current health insurance company to see if they cover it, even if you are fairly sure they don't! I thought mine wouldn't, but I just called to double-check and apparently I can get the series for the cost of the copays; for me, this comes to a total of $75, rather than $720. So check and you might save a lot of money!

I had a hard time with my insurance as well, but when I gave the ladies at the vaccine clinic my insurance they submitted it and I got 2/3 of my money back. It was nice to have surprise extra money mid semester.

My insurance is covering the full price of the vaccine and I will only be paying my co-pay of $20 per visit 🙂

So anyone excited about having to dress 'professionally' next year??? *rolls eyes*

I am waiting to hear from Oregon, but have accepted a seat at KSU. I don't want to pass on the opportunity to go to vet school! 🙂

Don't worry, it only lasts during orientation and most of the first week of school. 🙂

congrats on your seat at ksu!!!

Thanks!!! I'm very excited about it, but would turn it down if I get the call from Oregon :xf: (even tho I've kinda lost hope on it.. haha)

Hi. Do any of you know why Kansas accepts so many OOS applicants? I guess if you have only ~150 IS applicants you have to pull from somewhere, but is there something wrong with Kansas that no one from Kansas wants to stay there? (I'm half joking)

Aside from a good program, I'm looking for somewhere I will be able to stand living for four years. I've lived in a liberal area of CA for most of my life, and I'm married to another woman, so diversity and a not terribly bigoted atmosphere are important.

Do you guys have any input about any of the above?
If Kansas is a horrible idea for me, any other schools you might suggest that I might not expect to be a good fit for me? thx

Okay, I'm probably going to get rocks thrown at me for saying this, but I personally could not handle living in Manhattan, Kansas for four years...and I chose to attend Mizzou in Columbia, Missouri, so that's saying something. I just found the area to be really barren when I went for my interview (as in, they were just getting around to building an Olive Garden there). If you're from a liberal area in California, I'd definitely visit the area before making any solid decisions. I should also note that I grew up in a big, big city.

This is a KSU thread and I am not going to knock KSU (wink wink, zeebra).
Manhattan, KS is on the small side, it's true. But most vet schools are situated in small, college-oriented towns (ie: East Lansing, home of MSU, has the nearly the same population as Manhattan, KS). So, Squibby, coming from the liberal bastion that is the Bay Area, you probably aren't going to find similar living conditions unless you go to vet school in highly urban areas (MN, PA, and MA come to mind).

As for diversity: Kansas is certainly not the most diverse state, but everyone I met was incredibly kind and friendly.

As for LGBT situation: I got into a very interesting discussion with a woman sitting next to me on the plane: she and her female partner (she worked at the zoo and her partner went to the vet school) had both lived in manhattan for 4 years and they didn't have any problems. I also met another lesbian couple who were both interviewing at KSU the same week I did. Go figure.

Interesting, and after I had just crossed KSU off my list. I will give it a bit more thought. Thanks. 🙂

Ditto re: tolerance for LGBT folks. I have a good friend who's also a student at K-State CVM and is gay--she's very happy in Manhattan and feels very comfortable with all the Midwesterners!

I loved the school when I visited, and -being more of a mountain and ocean person- I was surprised by how much I like the area. The surrounding prairie is beautiful!

I just got back from a few weeks out there to set up my house, and I can attest to the friendliness of the people. The house had been vacant for over a year, but one of the people who knew I was coming (perhaps someone from the church I'll be going to) had planted flowers out front for our arrival. Our neighbors came over to introduce themselves, and one of them even offered to mow the lawn for the time that I'll be away. I went to set up a bank account, and at the end of the meeting the representative who was working with me gave me her number and told me to call if I ever needed anything -whether or not it was related to banking! And most people are polite, smile often, and generally make other people feel like the valued individuals they are 🙂

I personally could not care less about what restaurants Manhattan does or does not have, but even if I did, the positives of the town far outweigh the negatives. I'll take nice people, bright stars, fireflies, and open spaces over any city at a heartbeat.

P.S.
I ended up with the surprise of having options, but even so: any place with a vet school that accepted me became a very, very attractive place in my eyes. I would suggest not being so quick to cross schools off the list, unless you know you would be unhappy there even if it was your only choice 🙂

Haha! I really did like the school! I wasn't knocking the program, I promise. The school and people I met were wonderful. I just felt a little suffocated by Manhattan itself. At least in Columbia, MO, I'm six hours or so from Chicago (important to me because my best friend and boyfriend are from there), and in between Kansas City and St. Louis. So since Squibby said she's from CA, I worried for her a little bit. The most important things to really consider when choosing a school, of course, are program fit and cost. KSU doesn't let you gain in-state tuition, period.

I just gave up my seat so I hope it goes to a fellow SDNer... lets get the dam KSU waitlist moving already! 🙂

resurrecting this post from the dead! 🙂

I'm hoping to apply to K-State this year and have a couple q's for those who have already applied. I've also e-mailed the school but I'm impatient. 🙂

I took a 3 unit OChem Lecture and a 1 unit OChem Lab. This was then the pre-req for my biochem course. Anyone know how strict they are on their O Chem unit count? (they say 5 units..I've only had 4)

I think you should be OK. IIRC, I had this exact same question for KSU and they accepted my chem which was one credit short of the "requirement." I think they also accepted a journalism class I had done for my BA many many years ago in lieu of 3 credits of english composition, so they seem to be fairly flexible. Dr. Elmore was very good about getting back to me quickly. And I think it was KSU that has some program on their website that lets you check eqivalency for classes taken at almost any US college. Like we have that out here in CA for just CA public colleges, but I was very surprised at how extensive KSU's was - I was actually able to check on the classes I had taken for my BA at a little state college in NY. I believe there was a link for it somewhere on the application page for KSU.

Hope I'm remembering all that correctly - it already seems like a long time ago since I applied, and I think I may have purged most of that application stuff from my files once I was actually accepted.

Thanks so much for the reply - I did e-mail Dr. Elmore so hopefully he/she will get back to me soon.

off to the website to find some of the equivalency stuff!

Dr. Elmore is a he, but his first name is Ronnie, which I guess could go either way. It was a little confusing when I was communicating via email and hadn't met him yet, and had to communicate with some of his staff and find a way to refer to him gender-neutrally. Didn't want to take a chance on incorrectly sexing the dean of admissions! But he does seem like a pretty personable, easy-going guy anyway, so he probably would have just chuckled.

Oh, looks like there are some new recent additions to the CO 2014. Some faces on there I haven't seen before and my picture has moved, so there has been some action there.
