For you Out Of Staters that are flying to Kansas for your interview.. how much did you guys spend on your flight and hotel?

I'm flying from southern California and it's costing me $577 for my round-trip flight and hotel room! Just curious how much it's costing everyone else..

I'm going to be in so much debt after interviews!! :scared:

I think I got my flight for $223 from Washington DC. I think that was an ok price. Haven't gotten a rental car yet, though. Still need to do that. I wonder how much that'll cost...

Roundtrip airfare from Newark, NJ: $285
2 day rental car from Hertz: $71.51
Hotel room: $95-115
Vet school interview: priceless
(it would make a great commercial wouldn't it?)

At least my best friend lives in Columbus and I won't have to pay so much for my OSU interview! 🙂

haha! that would be a great mastercard commercial! and you're right, it is priceless. 😀

I found really reasonable fares on southwest from BWI to KCI. Less than 200 round trip.

Just so everyone knows, there is a shuttle from KCI to Manhattan that's about $91 roundtrip. It would probably be cheaper than a rental and you wouldn't have to worry about driving in bad weather (there is suppose to be another storm moving in Friday). I live in Manhattan so if anyone has any other questions feel free to ask.

My flight from Philadelphia (USAir) was about $330. I'm trying to rack up my frequent flier miles with them in case of an interview elsewhere 😉

Staying at the Hampton one night only ($100 less AAA discount) because after the pizza party I'm driving back to Lawrence to stay with some good friends who live there 🙂

Hi, guys,

Hopefully word has gotten around about this, but wanted to give you all a heads-up: there are several hotels in Manhattan that are very close to some train tracks. They might not advise you of this over the phone, and you might only find out once you get here! The trains run 24 hours a day, so if you're worried about getting sleep the night before your interview, I'd recommend you ask the hotel folks specifically about this when you book your room.

I ended up staying in one right next to the tracks the night before I moved in, and that was bad enough (exhausted from a cross-country drive)--can't imagine how terrible it would be the night before my interview!

Anyways, hope that helps some of you. 🙂 And if you're worried about the weather and yet really want to have a rental car, keep in mind that the interstate is pretty darn flat and straight. Easiest driving to do in bad weather (I had to do it last year for my interview in snow, ice, and 4-degree weather--and they gave me a PT Cruiser! I took it slow and didn't have any problems.) Just make sure you feel at least somewhat comfortable driving in slippery conditions.

GOOD LUCK to all of you!! Hope to see you in the fall!! 😍 :luck: 😍 :luck: If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me--but I'll be on the road driving back home for winter break. Leaving Thursday morning. Should be able to check Friday night at the latest, though.

I was going to stay in Lawrence at my parent's house, but I decided to stay in Manhattan the night before my interview. Probably better to be isolated a bit, and I also am not willing to risk dealing with weather if I don't have to. My interview will be Sunday though, so it be easier to just go to the hotel after the party.

Good to know about the hotels near the tracks. A simple map search (available on hotels.com) should make the places located near the RR tracks easy to spot.

In case anyone was wondering: It is not specifically spelled out in the interview letter whether tours of the vet school are going to be available, but I emailed the admissions office and they said that student ambassadors would be available on Saturday and Sunday to lead tours. Probably pretty obvious, but I wanted to make sure since it will be a weekend and all.

This thread is making me even more excited about my interview! 😀

If you want to rent a car, Hotwire.com was one I used last April out here. That was about $22/day... I realize, for my interview, I had a car for $16.xx/day through Enterprise. But I may've had a coupon; can't remember now.

Good luck to everyone interviewing! Safe travels to all.

Hopefully I'll be on the road tomorrow to head home for break with my hubby! Tonight I'm in KC, warm and toasty.

Thanks, Cookie; nice to see you on the forum again; have a great Xmas break

The least expensive rental car company at the Kansas City Airport is usually Enterprise -- reserve online. Also, the hotels in Junction City are MUCH less expensive (and generally nicer) than those in Manhattan and it's an easy commute from there to the vet school (about 20 minutes). The Quality Inn in Junction City is brand new and is usually about $60-$80 night (maybe less with AAA) and that includes breakfast. I think there is also a Holiday Inn Express, a new Marriott, and a Best Western, if I remember correctly. As another poster noted, there is a problem with freight trains running 24/7 close to hotels in Manhattan and, unfortunately, that's a problem in Junction City too -- must be a Kansas thing! When you reserve a hotel, your best bet is to ask them if there are train tracks nearby and, if so, ask for a room on the side of the hotel furthest away from them.
