Kansas State Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you both for the info on taxis and the contact info for Bell Taxi! I will definitely give them a call to try to set something up. Best of luck to you on your interviews as well! I'm really looking forward to visiting Kansas -- I'm coming from California and hoping it won't be too cold! 🙂

I'm coming from California and hoping it won't be too cold! 🙂

I'm from CA too. I'm nervous about the road conditions--I've never lived more than a few miles from the west coast, like hell I know how to drive in snow! It's probably gonna be more like a 3 hour drive or more from Kansas City since I will definitely be going very slow.

does anyone know around how much it costs per semester to attend KSU? $20,000 i'm thinking?

Is there a more round figure? I figure $1,002 * 22 but usually there's tons of ticky tack other fees applied (computer, equipment, student center, stadium, maintenance, health care, etc and so on fees) which raises the number substantially above just base tuition.

AAVMC says "
TUITION AND FEES
: Estimated tuition and fees for 2008-2009

$17,792/yr for Kansas residents $37,972/yr for non- residents"

So basically, I have no idea how they calculate everything.

Well that's a good enough figure, just didn't think the tuition * hours would get me the 'true' cost (excluding extraneous living expenses and what not, of course).

Anyone know if you can gain residency with Kansas?

$20,000 per semester is pretty close. In addition to the tuition, the other billed fees that came up on my statement were the campus privilege fee ($341.75/semester), technology fee ($400/semester), and parking permit ($150/year, billed in the fall after I requested one).

Unfortunately, gaining residency isn't an option.

Hi all! Where are people staying for their upcoming interviews at Kansas? Also, is anyone by any chance flying into Manhattan around 3:30 on Saturday for this weekend's interviews and want to share a cab over to the school? I'd love to wander around and explore the campus a little before the pizza gathering and would love to meet people! 🙂 Perhaps we can initiate a Saturday late afternoon get-together?

Happy holidays!

This sounds kinda silly, but does anyone know how formal the pizza party will be? I have an interview the same day and I'd be more comfortable changing out of the suit afterward, but I really have no idea what the clothing etiquette is for school-visiting events aside from the interview.

I'll be in the same situation.
Will khakis and a sweater be okay?
I really would prefer not to be in the suit all day too, seeing as I need to keep it clean for my other interview!

Do you mean for you personally or is that school policy? I know some schools require that if you start out as OOS, you pay that tuition for the full four years, while I think I've seen others that do let you switch to instate tution if you gain residency. Wherever I go, I will be legally relocating (DL, taxes, permanent address, all that) for the full four, so I'm hoping KSU might be one of the flexible schools.

Trust feadog on this. When I interviewed at Kansas State, they made a big deal at the pizza party that you WILL NOT get in-state tuition for ANY reason, and that they were in fact thinking of making incoming accepted OOS students sign a contract stating that they will pay out-of-state tuition all four years.

Actually, we did have to sign something saying, essentially, if we were admitted as OOS students we understood that we would pay OOS tuition all four years.

The pizza party was casual. I went in dressy pants and a sweater, but most people were in jeans. Another thing to note about that, unless it's changed, it actually wasn't held at the vet school but rather at the K-State Student Union which is about half a mile down the road.

Does anyone know what kind of schedules the tours are run on and what to expect? 🙂

My interview is at 4 pm on Saturday and I'm trying to plan my day! (so excited! )

Hey so just a little question for those of you that live in places with seasons, what do you wear when its cold? It sounds stupid but I have thought about it and it seems like interview clothes and usual cold weather wear (super layers) are incompatible since you end up inside. Any help is appreciated, since I heard that Saturday has a high of 16😱

You wear your suit with a warm jacket (lots of down or wool) on top with gloves, a scarf, maybe a second jacket and maybe a hat (as a girl with hair, a hat would not work for me). but a scarf and gloves are a MUST in the cold

man I wish I was somewhere warm right now! I'm already sick of this winter

I wish Hawaii had a vet school, that would be awesome

I'm a wimpy little Californian too, and I'm having a hard time imagining how somewhere can be colder than Salzburg at Christmas! I'm wearing tights under my pants, as many pairs of socks as I can fit into my boots and a wifebeater (or two?) under my shirt. I'm still debating which coat. I've got a shorter one that might be (only slightly) thicker and I've got one that hits mid-to-low thigh, which was nice in Italy because it covers my butt when I sit down on a cold bench. I might have to make a Target run too, since I don't think I remembered to bring my scarf with me from home.

I have a 10:30 interview this Saturday, and I'll be going to the pizza party, so maybe I'll see some of you there! 🙂

I'm getting nervous like I did for my Ohio interview, but it was fun once I got over my mini panic attack in the morning. I hope it'll be the same in Kansas.

Hey all I'll be at the pizza party this Saturday too! My interview is at 3:30 but I'm planning to change out of my suit so that I don't spill on it haha. I wish we all had our SDN names pinned to our shirts so we'd be able to actually meet one another!

I'll be bold and say that my name is Marjorie, I'm tall and have long-ish brown hair. I'll be with my mom who is much shorter than me 😛 Please come say hello to me!!

Hey Marjorie, my interview is at 4 on Saturday! 🙂 I'm going to the pizza party too, so I should see you there!!! *fingers crossed on the interview, so nervous at the moment!*

Ill be at the pizza party too! Look for the stupid girl in vans with short brownish hair who is probably in a corner being shy or looks like a deer in the headlights

Lol stupid girl?! That's silly. I'm seriously shy too and a terrified traveler which is why I'm bringing my mom 😳

Aaahh, I'm getting super nervous too! Wishing I'd been more obsessive in my preparation, except I know I'd still be nervous regardless.

I'll probably see you, Marjorie. My interview is at 3:00p on Saturday and I'll be going to the pizza party too.

For the rest of you, I'm medium-short, have dark brown hair and I'm traveling alone, so I'd definitely love to meet people.

Stupid for planning to bring those shoes. My mother is convinced my paddock boots would be more appropriate🙄

ETA: variegata, you are from San Diego ya? When are you flying out?

Well, we can be stupid Californians together. I'm probably not going to wear my interview boots all day, leaving me with black Adidas all-stars as my most (but still not very) warm or water resistant shoes.

Haha you guys are funny. I'll be the NYer with my big, warm winter boots 🙂

No Uggs though....ew....

Whoa, I do have Uggs. Totally forgot about those since I don't wear them in San Diego. Should I bring the Adidas with the leather and rubber, or the Uggs (which I know are not water/snow proof either since I wore them in Europe during the winter). Decisions, decisions.

Badcats: I'm flying out tomorrow morning at around 11 (after a lovely bus trip to the airport since all my friends have work or school at the hour I'd need to go there.) Are you down here in SD too?

Well even though I don't particularly like the style, I'd recommend the Uggs because it probably won't be too wet or snowy just really cold and those will supposedly keep you warm. (Don't take my ew comment the wrong way it's just that I'm sick of seeing every single girl at my campus wearing Uggs and leggings....wish that fad would end!)

I go to school in the south, and I just don't understand why girls wear shorts and uggs....pretty contradictory

They do that in San Diego too...fear not, I'm not one of those girls. My Uggs have been safely in my closet since my return from studying abroad.

Thanks for your input, guys. The Uggs will be coming along with me in the interest of my poor, cold toes.

I'm from Temecula, so I am just flying out of San Diego since there were no directs out of Ontario. Stupid Southwest wanted to take me to Oakland then down to San Diego, so I figured I would skip all that extra flight/layover time and just drive.

Agreed about the shorts/ leggings w/ Uggs. No bueno

I've never seen this around my campus...but I just got back from Europe and OMG...I don't know if I saw a single girl without really tight jeans/leggings and boots. Maybe one. Even kids that had to be under 5 had the style going!

What color vans do you have? I have some too we could start a revolution.

Just the black canvas girl version of the authentics. Nothing too eye popping, it is the midwest. How about you?

I looked at the Southwest website and couldn't even find them flying to anywhere in KS. Apparently, I'm ******ed, because you and someone I work with both found nonstop flights there. So I used Expedia and I've got layovers both ways in Denver. Oh well.

Lol good point. Mine are black and pink, probably a little too jazzy. I'll stick with my Rocketdog boots which are more appropriate for the climate anyhow.

PS I just realized how girly it was of all of us to be discussing our footwear for this trip. Love it.

Be prepared for cold.....and wind chills 😱

Have fun at the pizza party, I enjoyed it.

When I looked about a month ago, they did fly direct from SD to Kansas City, but the Kansas City in Missouri (MCI), which is just over the river from the Kansas City in Kansas. I hate when they make city names all confusing like that. 😕 Anyway, I ended up finding a flight on Delta and Continental that was about $60 cheaper so I went with that. Not direct, but I don't mind hanging in an airport for a bit, always got studying to do.

In light of my recent Cornell acceptance I just sent an email to Kansas to withdraw my application. I hope this give those that are still waiting a better chance. Good luck everyone!

I'll be at the pizza party on Saturday as well. Most likely wearing a brown argyle sweater. One of us should just hold up a sign that says "Marjorie" like they do at airports and we can all gather around. 😳 Ok, so maybe not. I'll try to keep an eye out for shy travelers and tall girls with short mothers.

HAHA thank you firelily for making me laugh during this time of extreme nervousness! (and anger directed at Cornell) I hope someone has a sign with my name on it..it would make my life. Well...maybe my week.

Bedtime...see you all on Saturday!

Hmm... is it wrong that I get excited when I see people withdrawing applications to schools I'm still stalking? I don't think so because it means they got a spot somewhere they are excited about and another deserving SDNer might still get a chance. Now granted, I'd prefer that SDNer be me, but alas, any worthy fellow forum obsesser is a pretty darn good second. 😉

Congrats on Cornell Mereafterthough!

Thanks crittergal! Lol it's not wrong at all. In fact, that is exactly why I posted this news so that someone else can get a shinier glimmer of hope. Good luck!:luck:

I think we all pretty much feel that way. My Kansas interview is this Sunday at 9:00 am and I'm going to the pizza party. I hope I get to meet one/some/all of you there. I have no clue what I'm going to wear but I'm pretty short (5'2") with reddish curly hair. Better yet, if you see really pretty, blonde, curly hair, that's my sister and I'll be near by 😉

Goodluck everyone. I'm freaking and am leaving bright and early in the AM. Back to packing. 🙄

Mine is this sunday at 9 am too! I will be at the pizza party with my mom. Fairly tall brown haired girl with shoulder length hair and a mom who looks exactly like her, most likely wearing jeans a sweater...maybe some uggs!

Ditto to Robert about the cold...brrr! So THIS is what -15F feels like....

Anyways, make sure you guys drive safely from the airport. Not sure how the roads (I-70) look, but we've had some snow and the wind's been blowing it all over the place...be safe and best of luck this weekend! :luck: :xf: 😍 👍
