Kansas State Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Zeebra, I'll be at the pizza party by myself as well. So you are not alone!

Oh okay, cool! If you feel like chatting, you can find me. I'm really tall with long brown hair, and I'll be wearing a turquoise shirt and dark wash jeans. And thanks for the support everyone, you're the best! Gotta get to bed, 8:45 am flight, bleh..

Could everybody interviewing there this weekend do two things for us:
First-do really well on your interview and have a great time
Second- try and ask someone precisely when they plan on sending out letters

Yeah, if they ask if I have any questions at the end of the interview, I'll say, "By the way, everyone at SDN wants to know when they're getting their letters!" I'm sure with my powers of persuasion, they'll tell me everything.

Edit: The Associate Dean said that letters should be sent out within the first two weeks of February. Sorry to make you guys wait anxiously for a couple more weeks. 🙁

Anyone who's already interviewed: it says the tours are from 8:30 to 1:30, so do you just show up any time in that slot and ask for a tour or do you show up at 8:30, do a 'welcome' session, maybe financial aid, etc. then a tour?

Tours run about every hour, so you dont have to show up at 8:30!

They said letters would go out in a week or two. They're shooting for mid-February.

Kansas is pretty awesome. Not sure whether I liked it better than Ohio but it wins out over Iowa. Also the landscape is amazing. Not sure where people get that Kansas is flat (probably is more to the west) but the area around KSU is great and quite scenic.

I thought is was SO FLAT. I'm from the northeast though, so we have hills and mountains everywhere. Kansas's 'hill' (yes, there was only 1) was practically an anthill compared to what I see usually.

Guess it's in the eye of the beholder. There's hills everywhere here in Kansas (driving from Kansas City to Manhatten, at least). Texas is a board in comparison. Take away all our trees and we're much flatter than Kansas.

I live in the foothills of the rockies, so yeah... flat.

I was told by the second week of February! (woo hoo!)

I hope all of your interviews went great this weekend and I hope we all get it soon!

Every time this thread gets bumped up, I have a mild heart attack thinking that someone just got their letter in the mail.
I'm not home this weekend, or next, so I've got my landlord on the look for anything with a Kansas postmark on it!

And yes, compared to New York and New Hampshire, Kansas is incredibly flat. And all the roads are straight...it was kind of wierd.

The 70mph speed limit was kind of nice on those straight highways though!

I get you, I almost feel like reaching out for a defibrillator every time there's a new post!!!!! I can't wait to hear from them, talk about trying to focus for tests with this anxiety!!!!!

Well fine! I'll take my hills and go home then! 😀

I don't know if this changes when they will send out acceptances, but....

Marcina e-mailed me (and I assume others) today, saying that many people were unable to attend their scheduled interview date due to cancelled flights or conflicts. My flight was cancelled from the heavy rain and was unable to make it. She offered other interview dates for Sunday of that same weekend, and the following Sunday (would have been 2 days ago), but I was unable to spend that kind of money to get out there. She set an interview date for February 26th.

Out of curiosity, how did everyone like KSU? Does anyone have any schools that they prefer and liked better based on tours/interviews/etc. (for any reason)? I have been accepted to Edinburgh (Scotland) and am not sure if I want to reschedule a flight again since I don't know that I would love Kansas that way that I will probably love Edinburgh. Thoughts?

Hope the extra interview date they created doesn't interfere with when they notify people with acceptance letters!!!

I think the fact that they are willing to reschedule an interview date nearly a month later says a lot about the program. I've visited several schools that were nice, but K State "wowed" me --- they went out of their way to make the interview process smooth and friendly. I love the fact that if accepted:

- you're "assigned" to a second year and fourth year buddy that help you out if you need it.
- You get your own desk in the anatomy lab
- It's a "paperless" curriculum meaning you use a laptop for all your classes (though you can print notes off if you want)
- The class seems kind of like a family - though interactions between students vary, students that I talked to there said that classmates tend to really support one another
- It is gorgeous there - and the Konza prairie is nearby

The only thing that is getting me down right now is the cost --- so make sure you are willing to pay OOS tuition. They have increased tuition to $40,500something a year --- and that does not include any of your living expenses.

I know there are some KSU people on this forum --- so you might try PMing some of them. rugbychick is one of them.

I wouldn't think rescheduling a handful of interviews would hold up the process for the bulk of us - it better not anyway! Dean Elmore, who was kind of the MC for this past weekend, said several times that the adcoms will be meeting intensely over the next two weeks, sorting/ranking everybody, and sending a final list of offers to the Dean, and they hope to have that all done by mid-month. Also said they "overbook". So for about 60 OOS seats, they will make about 180 OOS offers, knowing many will decline and go with their instate.

So I would think they could move forward with processing all of those they have met and make maybe 150 offers, putting some on a "maybe" list and keeping a few offers available for those yet to be interviewed? Seems like they have some wiggle room with how they fit people in.

So, I e-mailed admissions and this is the message I got:

"Zijin:

We are working on notification letters now and they should be mailed by the end of this week. They will be hard-copy letters sent via the postal service, so watch your mail box.

Marci Ritter"

So those of you that have interviewed in Jan (including me) may hear from them by next week. 🙂

Woo hoo! :xf:

The letters are making their way across the country to us at this very moment! If I had the time, I'd be sitting in the tree above my mailbox like an ambush predator.

HAHA! That's a funny mental image. How do you know they've been sent out? Did you call and confirm with them?

All letters?

*goes to perch on the eaves above the mailbox*

Does anyone FOR SURE know that they sent them out today???

I was told by an admissions official that they would be mailing them out by today, and I got the impression that they were sending all the OOS decisions at the same time (I don't know anything about IS). I'm guessing that we'll probably get the letters on Monday or Tuesday.

YAY! Thanks! I didn't want to email them since I was sure that others already had...

I'm OOS as well, and I interviewed on the 10th of Jan....

I wish they would send us emails to confirm the letters being sent...

Any news today anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I haven't heard anything yet. I would think that the weather in my area will probably slow down the mail service. We have over 15" of snow on the ground right now and more on the way. I really felt good about my interview though. AND I loved the school. If it weren't for the tuition and having to move again, I would so go to K-State over my state school. They were so nice and welcoming and the program totally wowed me too.

Good luck to every one else who is waiting!!! 🙂

Thing about KSU though is if you're willing to sacrifice 4 years into large animal, they'll forgive two years of your tuition for OOS (and however much it is IS). $20k/yr up to 4 years.

That's the most attractive thing for K-state to me.

I'm confused. Can we go over this once more? I haven't heard this for K-State. Is this like a loan forgiveness program if you work in KS after graduation?

Crap they didn't tell me that part. Though that does help with decisions.

Though with the 'where are you going' map in their vet school, there were only about 3 people staying in Kansas. Or at least, only three that marked that they were staying in Kansas.

Re: the rural vet loan forgiveness program--it is virtually impossible for an out of state student to be one of the scholarship recipients. They will gladly and openly tell you that. Personally, I can't see an OOS student ever getting that scholarship.

It's for $20,000 per year, and since IS tuition is still about $16000 a year, you're still looking at taking out SOME loans anyway. (Though not nearly as much!!!) And it is only 5 people per class, and you have to practice in a Kansas county with less than 50,000 people. Just FYI. (as an example, Manhattan would be too big.)

Do OOS people get much financial aid from K State in terms of scholarships? I've read the scholarship pages on their site, but most don't have amounts next to them. I'm looking at literally taking all tuition out in loans...meaning I will probably be in debt until I'm 50+ :scared:. How do OOS people in your class plan to pay this off?

I'm in the same boat--paying for everything with loans. $50K first year, $55K second year, $60K this year.

How do I plan to pay it off? Specializing. the best thing you can do if you want to do GP is to get as prepared as possible to hit the ground running in practice. You need to be ready to make your employer $$ so that they can pay you enough to make your loan payment.

As far as scholarships, they range from a couple hundred bucks to several thousand. I've received several need-based scholarships totalling less than one semester's worth of tuition--but still a sizeable amount!! 🙂 I don't know if other people have been as fortunate, though. (Fortunate to be one of the neediest people?)

Alliecat, do you know how much your loan payment would be monthly upon graduation? Or an example of one? How much more can a veterinarian expect to make by specializing?

I was just wondering what you all thought of K-state's facilities? I wasn't super impressed but I think it is because my tour wasn't well done. I didn't get to see any large animal equipment that I've been really impressed with at other schools. Thoughts?

I love so much about K-state that this is an odd drawback for me (should I even be lucky enough to be selected.)

Well, I called K State financial and people seem to get around a max of $8,500 in stafford subsidized loans (meaning you don't pay interest on them until you graduate school). So, keeping that in mind, and knowing the rest will be unsubsidized loans (you pay interest on them - and the interest will compound on itself - even while in school), I calculated out loan payments with tuition and living expenses - I figured I'd probably borrow 52k a semester (tuition is 40.5kish and living around 12k - which is really living simply). I don't have my numbers in front of me right now --- but if I could pay the debt off in 10 years (yeah right), it would cost around $2,300 some a month. If you make that 20 years, around $1600 a month. Now keep in mind, this is only with stafford loans. - If you're in debt from undergrad, you may not be able to use only stafford loans and might be forced to get them from other places. It differs for everyone - my advice would be to call K state - they answered a lot of my questions.

Allie - I'm definitely specializing - planning on surgery at this point. Am I correct in thinking that to specialize, you do a year internship and then a 3 year residency? Thanks for the info!

I have about $35K in undergrad debt. I'm planning on my loan payments to be about $2K a month for at least 20 years. I'm 30 now and if I get a residency on my first attempt (increasingly rare these days) will be 36 when I'm done with my training/boards.

Yes, specializing requires a one-year internship (except for a few specialties such as nutrition, pathology and therio) and then a residency of 3 years. Some residencies are up to six years if people want to do a PhD as well.

Surgery is THE most competitive specialty right now. It's becoming the norm to do a general rotating internship followed by a surgery internship +/- a surgery fellowship before matching to a surgery residency. One friend of mine has completed three internships and a surgical fellowship and has not yet matched to a surgery residency. Another just matched after an internship + surgical fellowship. One surgery resident I know of completed five internships before she matched to a surgery residency.

Lots of threads on here about specializing--take a look around. 🙂

btw, the LA caseload/facilities are good--I don't think you see them on your tour due to liability reasons--but their caseload pays for the SA side of the hospital.

Whelp, there goes any hope of getting married, having kids, etc. etc. Haha - I know it can be done, but wow, that is a lot to handle! Thanks for the information!

My class is only the second or third class to have had the scholarship, I think. Didn't pay much attention to the scholarship winners above us who are now out there practicing because a) I didn't know them and b) I'm not eligible for the scholarship anyway. Sorry... 🙁
