Hello. I was reading through the organic section in Kaplan's blue book. In the last chapter (amino acids), the book goes over polar amino acids and lists methionine as a polar AA. I remembered from my biochem class that methionine is nonpolar. I consulted my text (lehninger's principles of biochemistry, 4th ed.) and sure enough, methionine is listed as nonpolar. Either my text is wrong, or kaplan is.

Can anyone clarify this for me? Is this a weird property about methionine that can make it either polar or nonpolar? If not, are there any other errors you guys have noticed in this text?

Thanks!

Thats what I thought...so, are there any other errors in kaplan's blue book?

Yes Methionine is definitely nonpolar. I am not crazy about Kaplan books for orgo and general chem. If you want my advice, I would use Destroyer and Odyssey for General chem and orgo. You`ll be much better off.
Good luck.

Dotoday I already have Destroyer, do you think it's worth it to invest in Odyssey? I have been using Kaplan blue book third edition for the sciences as a foundation, then plan on using Destroyer to solidify my understanding. What do you think?

Oh and is Odyssey like Destroyer in that it is all problems and solutions? Thanks

Thanks for the advice! I read the blue book for a review of the basics...I started the destroyer yesterday and its PACKED with info! I hope I'll be able to go through it in time:scared:

Odyssey is a lot more advanced in Organic chemistry. If you still feel like you need more orgo practice then yes purchase odyssey as well. However, see how you do on Destroyer practice questions. If you think that you do very well, then you may not need the odyssey. Most people I know that have odyssey really love it. I learned a lot using Destroyer. It really helped me.
Hope it helps, good luck.
