In order to be classified as a hormone, a chemical must be:

A) derived from cholesterol
B) secreted into a body fluid
C) secreted into a duct
D) derived from an amino acid

Kaplan says the answer is B, however they all sound correct to me. Am i missing something?

So... there are three categories of hormones right? A) Peptide, B) Steroid, C) AA derived.

So A) is wrong on two counts, 1) it doesn't HAVE to be steroid derived to be a hormone, and further, it should be derived from steroid, not derived from cholesterol. Cholesterol is a type of steroid.

D) is wrong, because as you can see, AA derived is just one type of hormone.

For C) there is no reason why a hormone must be secreted into a duct 😵

thats all true, but hormones can be either secreted into ducts (endocrine) or into body fluids (exocrine), so how is B the correct answer?

Definition of a hormone is any molecule that has an affect on something else, so anything secreted does make sense. [H+] can be a hormone in your jejunum.

It's a very loose definition.

exocrine glands secrete enzymes through ducts
endocrine glands secrete hormones into the blood stream.

Key word is classified.

Anything can be secreted. It doesn't have to be a hormone.
