I talked to the advisor from Kaplan and he said the personal tutor was one of the most beneficial and yielded the highest results. I was interested in it until i heard the prices for 15 hrs its $1900+, for 25 hrs its $2900+ and 35 hrs it $3500+. Did anyone use the personal tutor? Are they more helpful?

I had Kaplan's private tutor last summer. It definitely helped improve my DAT score. We only focused on the areas that I was weak and barely went over the areas that I was strong in. Here is a comparison btwn two of my DAT scores:

1/05 8/05
AA: 17 AA: 19
PA: 13 PA: 17
QR: 18 QR: 19
RC: 19 RC: 20
BIO:16 BIO:19
GC: 19 GC: 17
OC: 15 OC: 22
TS: 17 TS: 19

Also, even though dental schools don't look at this statistic, I improved from a 49% to 82% in AA.

Did you take Kaplan classroom/online for your first DAT?

I was wondering the same thing 😕 I'm leaning towards the 15hrs but the price is crazy. Depending on what people say on this forum, I'll make my choice in a couple of weeks before the 29th of this month.

I wouldn't recommend it. You probably can post an ad on craigslist and look for a DAT tutor with a much cheaper price, like $30 an hour. The only difference is that the Kaplan's tutor has access to many practice materials.
But I think Top score and DAT achievers practice tests will be go enought for preparing for DAT.

For everyone that is wondering whether you should take kaplan tutoring or course. I have already gotten into dental school, I am just trying to help those that are in the place I was a couple years ago.
If you have trouble studying on your own, I would recommend you taking Kaplan DAT course but honestly for the money you pay it doesn't help a lot. If you can study on your own, get the kaplan comprehensive review (which is ok and the same as what they give you for the course). For the science section, if you can get individual books like one for bio, one for gen chem and one for orgo, it helps a lot, because kaplan science sucks and will not help you a lot b/c it doesn't explain! Then get the top score pro CD, it's REALLY helpful. I have nothing against Kaplan, but honestly I took the kaplan course and I scored 17, but I studied on my own for the second time and I got 19. I never took private tutor because it's just TOO EXPENSIVE. I am sure it's better than the course but not many people can afford it!
Good Luck
Remember NOBODY can help you but YOURSELF!

To reiterate what has been posted previously, I can say without a doubt that Kaplan was helpful. Unlike most of my friends and fellow colleagues, I am the worst test taker, part of that stems from lack of confidence. On the other hand taking the course gave me the confidence I needed and the test taking skills to do well on the DAT. Went from 17 to 19.

That price is insane!!!
I scored in the 20s, got 95th percentile for perceptual ability by using the following products:
DAT professor online
Ace the DAT online
Kaplan's book with CD
Topscore pro
To do well on the PA, just practice like a maniac. It is a matter of being able to recognize time traps (the first question on the PAT is ALWAYS a time trap, guess and move on), come up with time saving methods etc.
I have a method for each section, if you are interested, send me a PM.
For the science sections, do the problems in your intro Bio, gen chem, and OChem books. If you can do all of those, you will rock those sections. I scored in the 98th percentile for Ochem and the 96th percentile for Bio. My worst science was gen chem, I was in the 75th percentile. I am mathematically challenged, 32nd percentile for QR.

Just use your textbooks/review notes and study them diligently according to the scope of examination of DAT. Then work on all sample tests you can get for intensive amount of practices.

DAT Achiever seems to be the most challenging of all guides, followed by Kaplan/topscore, etc. The ADA free sample booklet (an easier set of tests) is what you should probably start with...

I actually took the DATs three times. The first and second time i took the dats, i pretty much made the same scores(w/o the help of kaplan tutoring). The third time I took the DATs(the wk after the kaplan class was finished), i did much better. Personally, I think Kaplan improved my studying habits as well pointed out the weaknesses that I had to overcome.

I think the Kaplan course is helpful but worth only about $200 not $1K. You are paying for the material. The actual class learning is worth about $20. I'm not a good test taker and still found it worthless.

For $50 you can go buy the book and find a tutor to work with. If you want the kaplan practice test and worksheets, you can download (free) these on tons of different websites (Ex. emule, etc.).

You could also buy all the Kaplan materials from someone and save $$$$.

Emule- is a program where you can download music, programs, document and Kaplan stuff. You can dowload this emule program for free on the internet. Another free downloading program is called limewire. You should be able to download the Kaplan stuff on either of these sites. Your call.

Anyone that has taken the Kaplan class will have all DAT material in the form of a .pdf file. I am telling you, Kaplan sucks. If you are a serious student, and most of us on these threads are, then why pay $1,300 for the class and more for a tutor.

On a side note, when I took the kaplan class for the DAT, my friend was taking it for MCAT. Our kaplan books were the exact same, page-for-page. They just add an additional book for physics. All the worksheets were also the same. Kaplan is a business and they try to make $$$.

www.craigslist.com, this is a website that is basically classfied adds for different cities. Very popular and free. I have seen tutoring adds on it and you could always post an add.

Thanks for the info apperciate it. 🙂

I bought the Kaplan book for $60, took the practice test cold in order to get a baseline score. Then I read half the book, halfheartedly, and took another practice DAT. Then I took the real thing and got: AA 23, TS 21, QR 23, RC 26, PAT 22, no subscores lower than 20. I think the high-priced tutors are for those who need to reconsider their career choice. Besides, what are you going to do if you get in to dental school? You can't hire the Kaplan people to remediate you all the way through.
