I'm starting clinicals in a few weeks and the first two I have lined up are peds and obgyn. I would like to accompany a review book a long with a text book for a given rotation so having said that, does anyone have experience with both, kaplan vs blueprints? I did a search but I didn't come across anything that helped.

I thumbed through blueprints a couple of days at my local B&N, and thought it to be a relatively good source, but have heard that kaplan is more thorough. Which is what I need.

If anyone has any input, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I read kaplan for peds and blueprints for obgyn. If you are going to read an actual text book for peds then you should definitely read kaplan as your review source. In my school every loves blueprints for obgyn and i think its definitely the best blueprints book of the series. In general i am of the opinion that you can never go long with kaplan for review just remember there are no pictures if thats something you need. Dont buy blueprints peds it really is terrible. One of the better peds books that doesnt get enough press is brs peds. Its very complete and the only brs book good for 3rd year.

I agree with drc243. I used BluePrints for Ob/Gyn and thought it was a great resource, and was also my favorite of the series. For peds, I felt both Kaplan and BluePrints were great resources, but I felt BluePrints gave a little more background on certain topics compared to Kaplan; so I used BluePrints if i wanted to read up on a certain condition a patient of mine had, but when it came down to studying for the NBME, Kaplan was on point.

Agree with the above post, Kaplan was on point for Peds in my opinion. The presentation of disease including Signs and Sx + Dx modalities + Tx steps were outlined very clearly. I am not a fan of Blueprints for shelf studying, but it is a good resource to read up on patients you may have. If you have time, case files is a good read too. Bottom line though, combine Kaplan with UWorld and you will rock the peds shelf.

i found case files for OB as well as peds to be really helpful.

and of course as ppl have already mentioned, ob/gyn blueprints is the best in the series.

In terms of the shelf exam, Kaplan helped more because it has sample vignettes and cases. reading the summaries at the end of the chapter for Blueprints is helpful.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I just bought the blueprints/case files combo for peds and obgyn. Hopefully thats all I will need. Thanks once again.
