are there going to be alot of problems like 1584x65x43/(32x3) on the real DAT. Kapplan got a crapload of them. Those calculations are time consuming. If you guys get something like this, what do you do to save time? round it up...this could present a real problem when they have answer choices very close to each other.

Generally if you see a problem like this, you won't have to work it all out. If the numbers you gave were the answer, you'd see choices like.

A) (32x3)/1584x65x43
B) (32x1584)/ 3x65x43
C) ...
D) ...

You won't have to work it out to get a numerical answer. 🙂

this is also true for some of the Gchem questions. Some questions on the Dat just want to see if you can set up the reaction or equation correctly.

I did not have any math eustions where the answers were not fully worked out, but plenty of GChem were like that. There are a bunch of math quesitons with large complex numbers, but if you memorize the rules to factor algebraic expressions then it is not hard. The DAT tries to test your ability to work against time on the QR especially, so you have to know all the tricks to simplify problems

what study materials did you use to learn those 'tricks'?

I'm finding Kaplan QR hard. I'm not doing to well in this section except the algera...any suggestions. I'm thinking of getting a tutor...
I feel u completely... I need suggestions to

Just practice working on more word problems. It's not that the math is hard, it's trying to identify what they are asking that trips people up. The more you work on problems, the faster you'll get at reading and you'll be better able to figure out exactly each question is asking. Then you can set up an equation to solve the question. There really are no tricks to this section. You don't need a tutor. If you have any questions, just ask SDN. 🙂

I spent a little time before the test just practicing doing the basic math. There are a lot of websites out there that can help with that. Get to where you can multiply or divide very quickly so that when it comes time for the test you don't have to waste time on the easy stuff.

Tutor might be helpful for finding tricks and shortcuts but ultimately you know the material... its just getting to be fast at it! How do you get fast? By practicing a lot!

I have a lot of trouble with math, too. My scores in math have always been less than 16. So, I went out and bought these two books by Barron:
Barron's Algebra: The Easy Way
Barron'a Math Word Problems: The Easy Way
$15 each book

The books are about 300 pages, BUT... they write the book out like a story with characters and everything, so you get through it really fast. The first night I opened the book I read 50 pages in a few hours. So dont look at the lengthiness of it, you will get through it very quickly. I am pretty sure that they have a Geometry versian as well as some other subjects, too! Get through those books and test youself again. I am sure you'll notice a difference. Hope that helps. Good luck
