Anyone here heard from KCOM about their financial aid fafsa award letter yet?? I'm getting nervous since I don't have any $$ for school yet?
russ

I haven't heard anything either... I'll probably call them next month if I haven't heard by then. Hang in there. :)

If you have questions about your award status, you can contact Steve Jorden- he's very prompt in responding and helpful to boot (such a deal)! It's my understanding the letters will go out in the next ten days. If you don't receive one by April 15 (ahh, tax day, another reason to celebrate) then drop him an email or contact the financial aid dept. for more info. DB.

Don't worry about it.

Just call the financial aid office if you are concerned but it is still really early in the game. As 3rd years (soon to be 4th years) our new financial aid year starts on July 1st and we still don't have anything for aid for next year. (Or maybe it is just me who doesn't have anything) since I haven't filled out my fafsa yet. We were told we should try to have it done by the end of April to be ready for July 1 aid.

Hey, in the discussion area on Stillnet (class 2006) someone from the admissions office said that KCOM will be sending out fafsa information in the next couple of weeks. There is a lot of good discussion going on so if you have received your password go there and check it out.
Ryan.

can you guys already get email via the KCOM system?

double elle,

No, the letter they sent that told us about the forum said we wont be getting our KCOM email addys until something like July. I don't remember exactly when, just know it is not right now.

Ben

I am moving the first week of June and need a house that accepts my 2 small dogs, and away from TSU. If anyone hears of a great location (park, etc.) please let me know. Oh, SOONERS pre-season football #1!!!!!

Patch,

If you are looking to buy, I know that Sweaty Paul and one other second year (Dave, not OMD Dave) are selling their houses. If you go to the class of 2006 forum on the Stillnet, and ask Spencer about rentals. He and his wife were just up there a couple weeks ago checking the housing out. If for some reason you have not received your password yet, let me know and I will get you Spencer's email address.

Yeah, for those of you who are interested in buying my wife and I are selling our house also. You can e-mail me if you have any questions about the house or the buying process. It is a 3 BR, 1 bath house about a half mile from school.

Patch Medic,

dctrben is right, we are selling. Let me know if you are interested in any details.

Sweaty

David,

Did I read that right? You are selling your wife?

haha

"Yeah, for those of you who are interested in buying my wife . . ."

Hey John,

I guess I should watch my punctuation and grammar and try proofreading. I'm not selling my wife, but if anyone is interested in a cat (just kidding, my wife loves the cat unfortunately).

David,

Sometimes cats "run away."

moving it up to the top.

I am planning to fly up and look for a rental on May 21-23rd, if anyone has any leads please contact me. The 2 small dogs seem to be a prob.,they are house broke and a part of the family, I will gladly leave a deposit! I am so ready for summer, planning a week vacation in Ca. and Fl., any kennels in the 'ville....see ya soon! :)

WHOHOOOO!!!!!

We got a house! I am SOOO relieved!!
We have a cat that is a family member to us, and we didn't want to let her go....but its REALLY hard to find places that will take one little cat!
Patch....I feel for you with the dog children! :)

But we signed (yes, sight unseen though couple of the best people in the world went by it and took pictures for us! We trust them....and the rest, we have our fingers crossed! lol) a lease and will be moving in about the mid of july.

It is about half a mile to the school....so Duncan will be the bearded man walking along Peirce street to and from the college. :)

I have never lived in a house of my own! Or had a washer/dryer! Or a basement! What will we do with a basement? :) Images of John Cleese and the Spanish Inquisition are pouring thru my brain. :)

Any other Monty Python lovers out there? Come out, come out wherever you are!

With smiles and a relieved sigh...
Wifty aka Rebecca akd the spouse that is happy to have a roof over her head! I don't ask for much you know. LOL

Patch-

Finding housing w/ pets is rough!

I do know that one of the anatomy fellows is moving out of herplace and she's had a cat... you may have to sweet talk the owner's but you might be able to swing that one. Email Macey ([email protected]). And I think Dr. Sargentini (microbio dept) may have a house for sale/rent.

Kennels... I know Kirksville Small Animal hospital boards... they charged $8/day for cats, not sure what it is for dogs... 660-665-1971

Hey y'all! The class of '06 just got a letter regarding the purchase of test files. I was wondering how helpful they have been to you in the past, if they are worth buying, etc. Thanks for your feedback! -Andrea

Ohhh!! I have been waiting for someone to bring up the test files subject!!!!

Test files have been a big help to me. However, it's all in how you use them. You can't just memorize the questions and expect to see them on an exam. You need to go thru the tests, look up the answers in your notes and find out why answers are correct/incorrect.

I have the test files packet they are offering you, plus the additional years I have copied (back to 1991-1993 in some cases!!!) I will be offering them to someone for 150.00. That will pay for a new toner cartrige at my husband's office. I have literally spent hours copying these things. They are all sorted into anatomy, biochem, histo/embryo, phys, OTM, etc...covering the entire 1st year. Believe me, by the time you go thru a club's files to FIND the tests you are looking for, stand at the copy machine and feed each page in, and pay 5 cents per copy...my price will seem like nothing!

If someone wants these I have, as I said, they are the EXACT same thing noteservice is offering, but you get a LOT more exams....let me know. When you get here, I will sit down with you and show you how I use them and I will try to help you sort them out according to exam 1, exam 2, etc...because they seem to teach in a little different order every year.

You might think - 'who has the time to go thru that many old exams anyway?' I did...and I will continue to use this method until my classes are over. They help you make important connections that you may not have gotten out of the notes. The important material NEVER changes!!

Private message me or email me if you are interested.

I completely agree with Double elle about her recomendation for using the test files. I would use as many years tests as possible and go through and look up the right and the wrong answers in the notes and highlight them using a different color for each year. that way when I went to review I knew that the more times something was highlighted the more times it was used. You also find that you read a lot of the packet of notes over and over trying to look things up. Often I actually never actually read the note packets I just looked up the old tests and it worked well. Sometimes when time got short actually most of the second year) my study partner and I split the cost of a set of test files and then would look of the questions out of the tests we had then would get together the night or two before the test and just copy the highlights over from one set of notes tot he other.

We never failed a test using this method. Both passed boards quite well. Are both doing well on clinicals and neither of us worked neirly as hard as most of our classmates.

Before anyone begins to comment on 'learning vs. studying old exams'. I want to say that you DO learn from old exams. There are individuals in my class who refuse to go over old exams because they think that they are 'cheating' and that success in school should NOT depend on studying old exams. While I do NOT think it to be cheating, I DO agree with the last part.

HOWEVER, once you get here, you will find that time is your most valuable asset. You will NOT have time (or energy) to memorize everything. Therefore, if you can make even 2-3 connections from old tests that you may not have made otherwise, that is time well spent in my opinion. My thoughts (and I said this earlier) is that the same information is important year after year. They test you on the most important concepts and throw some piddly stuff in there as well. However, if at least 70% of it is the important concepts that have been tested on in the past, then you've passed your exam right there.

Carrie was right about how much she actually read just looking up the test questions in her notes. I do the exact same thing. Therefore, I am studying exactly what THEY want me to learn from the BEGINNING. Also, you would be surprised at how you read a question and the answer doesn't make sense at all...so you have to dig in the notes until you find just how two things were connected. You actually get a lot of learning in that way because you are motivated to find out why one answer is correct over another.

This may seem like a headache, but you will understand it all when you arrive.

I also want to say, as a soon-to-be (hopefully) 2nd year, that my entire class is very excited to meet you all and we are anxious to be as helpful as we can.

For KCOM students-
Those of you that bought houses, was it a good idea? Is it really difficult to get people to buy them when you move? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it for only 2 years. Any feedback?

To anybody in the class of 2006 interested in test files. I have loveingly kept my test files and have added this years tests to sell to someone in the incoming first year class. I have corrected all of the answers that were wrong on the old test and on my tests (not that there were that many to correct on mine!) So anybody who might want them I am selling them for $70. (I thinks that half the cost of the test files, plus you get one extra year). From experience...there is no way you will ever pass any class at KCOM unless you have test files and more specifically, my test files. Do you really want to take a chance?

As far as the thoughts about old tests. Sometimes I use them, sometimes I don't. Usually when I use them, it is after I have finished studying and want to review the information. I don't touch them until after I have first gone through all of the notes. I have found it helps my grade by perhaps 5% compared to when I don't use them. I wouldn't recommend using them as your only study, just to suplement it. I would recommend them.

Perhaps the best idea is most of you will get study partners when you get out here. I would hold off buying them until you are here and then split the cost with someone and share the tests.

Thanks everyone for test files advice. Now onto microscopes... Are there other options for renting them besides Alpha Phi Omega? I wondered if anything was less expensive. You know I need that $200 for buying smoothies this summer. :D

My advice is to wait until you get here to do anything with the microscope. You will be broken into section A and B for lab. Find someone who is not in your section and share a microscope. That's what I did and there was never a conflict.

Conflicts have arisen in the sharing of microscopes. I went up to use my microscope once (which I paid full rental price for, and discovered another first year using it, who was sharing the cost of it with a second year) that made me pretty unhappy. If you want to split the cost with someone else (though it is forbidden in your rental contract) I say go for it....just don't piss someone else off in the process.

OK, maybe a cheap use of this site, but I will be moving in the fall after having signed a contract for the apartment. I am now trying to sell the contract. It is for 1 year starting in August.

It is $430/month. 2 bedroom. About 200 meters from KCOM. About 800 sq ft. 1 year old. Unfurnished. Probably one of the nicer apartments around being that it is new.

It is through Heritage House Reality, but contact me or them if you want more info.

About the test file issue....

You can buy the SGA test files if you want, but odds are you will be able to get the exact same thing for free once you get up here. When you get your second year mentor, odds are they will jut give you thier old test files, most eveyone has them. Another option is to join a club that has test files. That's what I did. I joined the Atlas club and included in the membership they email out a big compilation of old tests a few days before the test. It's really great and you don't have to sort through all of the test files and figure out which test is relavent because someone else has done it for you. If you want to dig through old tests on your own, they have a huge test file room that is open to all members. Also, it was the same price to do that than to buys SGA test files. I am pretty sure other clubs have old test files too but Atlas is the only one that emials them to members.

So, my advice is wait unitl you get up here to decide. You can always buy test files from SGA once you are here if you decide not to join a club that has them, or can't find a second year to give them to you for free.

Go ATLAS!!! There is no better way to pass exams than ATLAS compilations! <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" />

ATLAS also has cheap housing if you are single and not too picky. Digital cable and all utilities included. I lived there my first year and had a good time.

PM me if you have any questions.

NOWPA also has test files available to members... no email compilation but I think membership is only around $30...

But yeah definitely check with your mentor - most of us will help you out however we can

I'm with Blondarb, yeah Atlas may be a bit more expensive, but, their files are far more expansive, and the compilations cannot be beat, esp. since they are all on computer, and very easy to read and quiz one-self with, unlike some other exams that are very marked up and may have multiple answers circled (however, I am a neat freak when it comes to testing myself).

I would also advise getting involved with 'shameless plug' SOMA the Student Osteopathic Medical Association. Our chapter is quite strong and SOMA is your link, as a student, to the AOA. It provides you with an opportunity to begin shaping the direction of our profession as a student.

O.k. enough from me...To sum up Atlas and SOMA good.

Using old tests to guide studying...good, though as earlier posters cautioned I wouldn't count on them for more than what they were intended...to test your knowledge and direct you to high points because rarely if ever will a question repeat itself.

O.K. now I am done. You all should go out, get away from your computers and have a fun summer of play.

I didn't mention this in my earlier test files post, but if you have any questions about atlas, email me and I would also me happy to answer them.

I owe it to atlas because I didn't want to spend the money on SGA test files and atlas test files saved my butt!

I am here and loving the 'ville. The TCC is great, lots of good food, super Wal*Mart, every thing a family needs. TimberRidge Church is excellent non-denom. choice, people are wonderful, and my son loves the Aquatic center! I sat in a few classes, I can't wait, I will prob. eat these words by Sept.Ha!See ya soon.... <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Patch:

I'm coming to the end of my 2nd year here, and I'm still looking for good food. What have you been eating in this town?

Hey everyone! Hope you're all having a great summer. I know I am - I'm leaving this week for a month in Quito, Ecuador. Ahhhhhh. :) For those of you in K'ville, have you gotten new license plates yet? I was curious as to where that office is. Well, guess I better get back to being a bum! Muchas gracias y hasta luego.

Sweaty•••••There is a tattoo parlor in Kirksville?!?!? Does anyone ever frequent it?
Perhaps the Ville won't be such a huge change. :)

Wifty...pondering life and people

I actually got a tatoo there as well as a tounge ring. The tatoo guy is really cool but the body piercing guy seems kind of odd. Oh well.

Wow! I am just amazed they have such things in the Ville! It would be kind of ironic to leave Seattle (where many doctors have tats or piercings themselves) with just the holes in my earlobes to adorn my body....and go to the midwest to have stuff done. LOL Hmmm....just might have to think about that.

And piercers are always a little odd. :)

Those with family, significant others, fiancees, better-halves, etc -

There is an email group for the companions of the incoming students. We are getting to know each other, talking about all of you ::wink::, and setting up times to meet and other dates.

If anyone has a companion that hasn't joined, just write me and I will either subscibe them or give them the link to subscribe.

Its kind of nice for us to have people who are sharing this adventure, know each other. :) I think it will make it easier and more fun in the long run. :)

Email: [email protected]

With smiles,
Wifty aka Rebecca

Thanks Sweaty Paul for the info! You know, I have a theory about tattoos... I think you should get one from each place where you've lived, kind of like a memento to remember it always. So in a couple of years I may just have to stop by the local shop and get a.... hmmmm.... maybe a stethescope on my rear? I'll have to think this one through. :D
