I am a 2011 student and I think you all made a great choice. I really like KCOM and congrats if you got accepted!!! Just thought I would share that the houses are so cheap in Kirksville tons of students buy houses and then sell them when they are done.
If anyone is looking to buy a home in Kirksville check out this site:

Hey everyone! I'm 95% sure that I will be heading to Kirksville this coming fall and am excited to meet everyone. I was wondering if any current medical student could give their advice regarding laptops.

I have never had one and made it through my undergrad just fine without it. There were always a handful of student in my classes who had them but I always preferred the freedom of writing or drawing diagrams or whatever in my paper notebook. Is it the same in medical school, where some use them and some don't, or is it pretty standard that everyone gets one? I would prefer not to spend the money on one if I don't need it, but I definitely will if it will make a significant difference. Any help would be appreciated!

Hey Thriller. Glad you're leaning in the right direction. I am a 1st year student at KCOM.
I totally agree with you about needing to write and draw diagrams on your notes. I used paper notes in undergrad, but for med school I decided to switch to a tablet PC. It is a laptop where you can use a stylus to write directly on whatever document you have on the screen. I love it! They are quite pricey but I have really enjoyed the benefits of being able to write, highlight, and diagram directly on my notes with multiple colors. You can also copy and paste pictures into your notes to help illustrate something as you are reviewing. All of the notes are made available to students electronically before class so you have them on your computer during lecture. I would estimate that about 1/4 of the students use tablet PCs for note taking. The rest use paper notes.
If you are not going to get a tablet, then I don't think you would have much of a "need" for a general laptop other than to check email, gchat, surf the web, etc. during class. You can always go to the computer lab in between classes if you need to do something quickly online. Most people do seem to have laptops but not for during class or school work really. Some people use laptops to make nice tables for reviewing material when they are studying and like to have documents on their own personal computer instead of using the computer lab.
So if you are looking to save money than I would say you do not need a laptop. However, I highly recommend tablet PCs to anyone getting a new laptop. The Lenovo X61 Tablet is the most popular model and I haven't heard of any major problems. Good luck making up your mind. Hope to see you in Kirksville next year.

Thanks a lot for the information, it was very helpful!

I've been accepted, and paid all of my deposits, and was really excited about going to Kirksville. Until my mother passed away last week. I still want to go, but does anyone know if they offer any type of deferment if accepted for the next year?
The issues I'm having with her death are that my father has been deemed psychologically incompetent by the government (he was in the tail end of Nam, and it kind of messed him up), and I have a 13 year old little sister, and both have become my responsibility. I'm just at a loss for what I should do. I've worked so hard to get to this point, and I'm supposed to be going to my no. 1 school. Any suggestions from my fellow SDNers?

Jug I am soo sorry, I can't imagine. I lost my father when I was young. I am sure you can defer your admissions; I think right now your family needs you to be strong. If I were you I would discuss with your close friends and family for suggestions. Then I would directly call and talk to Admissions...whatever will be your final decision, I am positive that they will understand it.

Anyone else from socal heading to KCOM?

Jug, I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. Contact someone in the admissions office and let them know what is going on. Surely a deferment would be in order.

ATSU may be #1 choice, but family must be choice #1.

I would also suggest contacting the VA for assistance with your father, and to update them on the passing of your mother. If she acted as his power of attorney, or legally represented him on any other front, those items will also need to be straightened out so that his best interest is maintained.

Good luck my friend; my thoughts are with you.

I have a motorcycle and a car (and a scooter). This is Missouri so winters are terrible. If your going to choose one, go with the car. I have stored the motorcycle in the garage from October to about March. I guess if your a die hard and your bike will start at -10 F weather then you could ride almost everyday. It takes 40 F before my bike will fire up.

Does anyone know what the approximate price of student housing is (through ATSU)? Also, any thoughts on whether first years should live in student housing or rent off campus? Thanks ... and see everyone in August! I'm soooo excited!

I'm sorry to hear about your condition. It must be tough and I think the medical school would understand this and would allow you to defer. It might be hard to understand now but don't be discouraged. I'm sure all things will work out for you in the end. I recall a quote that says, "Trials and obstacles are the God's chosen methods of discipline (to help refine us and make us better fit for our task ahead) and His conditions of success (most successful people had to go through several obstacles in life to reach where they are today)" In the end, this obstacle you are facing right now will help you become a better and more successful doctor. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Thanks a lot for the info spongeracer. I have some months before I decide so I will think. When I went for the interview the tour guide liked the idea of a motorcycle. I might just get a car though, easier to go home when I need.

Has anyone received any info from KCOM regarding housing and stuff? I know they sent out the email with our school email and password but does anyone know when they will send out the rest?

The password they gave you will give you access to the schools database of apartments available. Go to www.atsu.edu then click the KCOM tab, then new/current student tab and find the link to housing. There should be another link to find current houses/apt that are availabe primarily to KCOM students. I would just copy the link right to the database where you can put in your password, but the site appears to be having some problems.
You could also try the following link (but it won't work until the university fixes their problem) www.kcom.edu/admissns/new_students. Best of luck.
As for the motorcycle story, It does occasionally snow here in kirksville and the roads can get slick at times. So a motorcycle wouldn't be advised for a few months of the year. But I guess as long as the roads are dry and you don't mind getting cold on your way to school it would be no big deal.

I ride a motorcycle to KCOM nearly everyday... but, there have been a few days when the roads have been complete ice... so, you'll need a back up plan.

This is true. At -8... my bike would not start.

From just looking around I think maybe 10% of the class actually bring their laptops to class. I live by mine... couldn't function without it. The plus for me is the massive amounts of paper... MASSIVE. In one quarter you'll have at least four or five 3" binders full. With onenote I have ALL my stuff with me all the time and can search it for info I need during workshops etc. when the professors ask you questions for something you should have memorized.

BTW... I have a gateway laptop for sale $300 (good one).

Thanks for the responses, I am going to give it some thought since I have some time.

I've looked around on SDN for some info the pros and cons of off campus vs. on campus housing and the best places for off campus apts. I ended up signing up for the on campus student housing. Any opinions on the student housing?

I have problem maybe someone can help me with. My wife accidently packed my acceptance packet with some other stuff that went into a storage unit, and I was wondering if someone could pm the URL to the online payment page for the remaining two deposits (and maybe the dates they are due). It would be a great help.

I'm so sorry to hear your story, I can't imagine how you must feel right now. Good luck with everything, life will work itself out in the long run. Take care.

I'm from SoCal! I'm from LA too, I'm 95% sure I'm going.🙂

good luck!

I have a question for fellow KCOMer's would it be too late to come and find an off-campus housing around August? It's really far for me to get to Kirksville so I want to move in/check out housing/rent in one shot of possible, thanks!

Just wanted to pop in and say I got a spot off of the waitlist! I am extremely excited. Now that I have an acceptance in my pocket, I just have to wait for my other schools to let me know what's up.

Just got moved off the acceptance pending a seat. I will be joining all of you in the fall and I am so excited!!!

Congrads!👍

To everyone:
Thanks for the advice, and know that I will be attending in August. I've already got a house so close to campus that it is sickening. Also there is a booze shop/snack shop right around the corner. Good times.
See you all in the fall.

Why is it so quiet on these forums? where is everyone? People mind sharing about housing?

Lol. I been wondering that myself.
I have heard good things about Heritage House Realty. I am too far away to check out any of the places in person so I checked them out mainly by talking to people that lived there and pictures I was sent by a rep. I actually just signed a lease for the Scott St. apts from Heritage House Realty. I talked to the admissions office and a person that lives there now, both highly recomended them. They have some apts left I believe but I think I got the last one on Scott Street, I got lucky. MedRow may still be available, its also owned by Heritage House Realty. One of my criteria was living around mainly med students. As far as I know the three biggest ones are the Scott St., MedRow, and student housing. Hope that kinda helps.

BTW, is anyone else living in the Scott St. apt. complex?

We already secured housing close to campus. We got a house on 5th street so close to campus I could hit the hospital with a rock. We did some dealings with Heritage House, and though they were really great, we went with a woman that owns a lot of properties up there to save on the price. What we were going to pay for a 1 bed apt, we got a 2 bed house that would allow our pets. couldn't pass it up.

I'm looking for anyone that knows anything about the PRIMO loan forgiveness program. Can anyone help me out?

I'm with ya there. I was nervous about finding a place that would accept pets. Glad to see you got it all worked out.

This may sound like a silly questions, but I am new to the financial aid process. Are there any steps i need to take after receiving my SAR report? I know we will be sent information from the school over the summer, but I didn't know if there was more I needed to do now. Thanks!

Hi 🙂
I am no longer going to be able to attend KCOM this coming year ... does anyone know what happens if/when I break my student housing contract (through KCOM)? I was reading through the fine print and I'm a bit confused as to what I will have to pay/fees/penalties ... any help would be great ... thanks!

Attention all students currently living in Kirksville...as we are searching for a place to live, my wife would really like to know if there are any places in Kirksville that we should avoid? We have two small kids and want to make sure we don't move in next to a meth lab 👎. Being a small town I doubt there are many shady places, but if you know of any and could direct us away from them it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

bump...where are all the future KCOMers. I just got a spot in the class and am really excited to start in August...now the search for housing. Where are most of you living and where is a good place to live?

brian-

Join the facebook group (KCOM class 2013). You'll find a bunch of info/discussion there.

Brian-
Good to hear you got in! I know you definitely wanted it from your posts and I was in the same boat as you, being originally on the pending a seat list. Congrats!!😀

Anyone on here heard anything about financial aid yet?

Nope. Last I heard it was going to be sent out at the end of June...

I just spoke with Mike at the Financial Aid office. He stated that several award letters went out last Thursday and Friday and that the remaining award letters are awaiting screening for possible scholarships and/or awards. He believes that the final award letters will be sent out towards the end of next week. He also assured me that, if we follow the on line video and fill out the 6 step online form, we should get the money on the first day of classes.
