Okay so here's the deal; I am from Utah and I have been lucky enough to be accepted to both RVUCOM-UT and KCOM. The deposits are due soon and I am trying to figure out which school to choose. I feel like I don't know enough about each medical school and how the medical field is changing to make the best decision, so I am asking you.
Pros for RVUCOM-UT
-Higher board scores
-In Utah for 4 years, wife from southern UT.
-prep for both comlex and usmle

Cons for RVUCOM-UT
-New (reputation)
-No Research

Pros for KCOM
-great reputation
-research

Cons for KCOM
-small city
-lower boards

Are boards more important than research and reputation? or should reputation and research trump boards?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am from Utah, and would have a hard time choosing RVU in its first year, however I cannot emphasize how much happier your wife would likely be if you stayed in Utah (Utah culture). However, KCOM has a lot of the same views and demographics as Utah so you can't go wrong, but I think you will be more successful in Utah simply because your wife would have support ya know? We have friends and stuff at my school but it isn't the same as having family and I know that is hard on her, so I compensate by spending more time being with her and less time studying. Just something to think about.

As someone who goes to KCOM I believe you should go somewhere that has support for your family if that is what you need! KCOM is extremely small but we do have a tight community. Everyone at our school is very supportive of each other. You also have the opportunity to do your rotations in Utah so you would be in Kirksville for only 2 years. I would say to go to which school you felt as more of connection with. I personally am far away from my family but am forever grateful to be here with such great classmates.

If you didn't have family obligations/legit geographic considerations I'd say pick the old established school over the brand new campus every time.

But since you do-- this is something you have to decide with your family.
