So here's my dilemma... I'm in to KCUMB but I think that DMU and AZCOM are higher on my list. I've been waitlisted at DMU which means that I'm waiting til mid-June most likely to find out where I'm at on the list. I just interviewed at AZCOM on April 5 and feel like there's at least a chance that I could get in there but most likely it will be 2 weeks til I find out (around April 19th) My deposit at KCUMB is due to be postmarked April 14th.

Do you think that if I call KCUMB that there is any chance that my $2K deposit could be extended a week? Anybody ever tried a deposit extension to save money? Any other thoughts? I figured that I could save myself $2K by maybe waiting a week but worst case my $2K is a great insurance policy for medical school and I would definitely go to KCUMB.

I think a week extension is pretty common. Just call. It should be fine.

Yeah, I actually got a two week extension for some other schools so that I could finish a bunch of interviews before I had to decide. Just wondering, when you interviewed at AZCOM, was there a Brandon Basha in your group? I am pretty sure he interviewed that day, he's a really good friend of mine.

Do you know if he interviewed on April 5? I'm hoping this extension goes over well with KCUMB. We'll see.

Yeah, he was there for sure on the 5th, short white guy, little chubby.

I would hold out for the DMU acceptance. Good luck.

So I called them and they said I have to e-mail an executive member for an extension which I did and now I'm waiting...Hopefully not too long before Friday... On a side note, I had a great interview at UIC (I know...not DO...but still) and am thinking that might be a great place to do medicine. However, still have my eyes set on DMU...we'll see how that goes...

If you go to DMU then a 6'6" swede will be at your back every time you drop the soap.  You had better come to AZCOM

Try 6'7" slimeball!
I'm going to beat you with my crutches. I wish you were comming to DMU though. You know you want it. 😛 😉

Neverheard of med students fighting over med students to go to different schools...but there's always a first...and 6'6" Swede I mean 6'7"...what's this about the soap in the shower...

Anyway...KCUMB said "no way Jose" too late in the ballgame to give extensions. So I'm going to buy my $2000 insurance deposit by sending in my check on Friday.(the last postmark day)

(I do have a minor plan...IF since I live in Illinois that my check can hold off til Monday late or Tuesday and I get accepted into AZCOM on Monday...there's a slim possibility that I could cancel my $2000 check and/or tell them not to cash it and save my money...again...it's a longshot...but still...UIC and AZCOM will almost for sure be getting back to me by next week or monday the week after...)

So excited and anxious...who could possibly throw away an acceptance and then roll the dice on 3 other schools? I'm super positive about UIC and I'm maybe a little overconfident in DMU and AZCOM but I still have a shot. (soap falling) Time to go dry off and go for a round of golf.

Siriceman,

I would definitely have the insurance policy if you are banking on DMU. Rumor is that they have enough seat deposits at this point for a FULL class. Granted, some of these may be insurance policies but then we still have interviews for a couple more weeks. Also, you might consider calling DMU to find out your waitlist status as the waitlist has three levels.

I would hate to see someone miss out on going to med school b/c they were overconfident about waitlist. Congrats on KC.

As if things couldn't get more complicated...So I got a phonecall saying that I have a conditional acceptance to AZCOM. Basically I'm guaranteed a spot for next year but for this year, I am basically first on the waitlist. They have never had a "conditional acceptance" not get in that year. Basically they don't overaccept so they put you on this list and if they don't get you off...they push you til next year. So do I still send in my KCUMB deposit for $2000 when I "kindof" have an acceptance to AZCOM and would rather go there? Gotta decide by 5pm today when the post office closes... Do any other people have this same problem (deposits for one school, waitlists at other schools, saving money, waiting for decisions)?

I DID IT...I SAVED MY $2K and am going to wait for AZCOM's full acceptance and UIC. They said I'm guaranteed a spot in the 2007-2011 class and will most likely be fine for Class of 2010. Last year, they had 15 provisional acceptances (same as this year) and all 15 made it in with 29 people on the waitlist getting moved through til the class was filled. I'm so rolling the dice but I'm saving money. KCUMB just didn't quite have the right feel for me.

Just a little older buildings. Neighborhood wasn't the best. I loved the curriculum and the DO/MBA option. I just couldn't get excited about it. Can't really describe that gut feeling...just couldn't get excited about going there. Don't let my feelings discourage you. Everybody's different and I definitely would have gone there if it was my only option. I just had something else that felt better.

Yeah. Everybody is different. I am in the opposite situation as the above poster. I applied to both KCUMB & AZCOM among other schools and was accepted to both and decided to attend KCUMB this fall. I loved the systems-based approach to lectures and the flexibility of rotation sites 4th year. I felt KCUMB was a better fit for me, but I thought AZCOM was great too. Good luck in your application process!

I haven't had the chance to check out AZ yet, but have been able to spend some time on the KCUMB campus and have really been impressed to this point. If I can get in there, it will be tough to beat for me for several reasons...though I do see a few areas for improvement. The systems based stuff seems to be right up my alley.

I was in the opposite situation. I was accepted at DMU and held out for KCUMB. DMU was fine but I liked KC better. There is a lot of new building occurring. Their curriculum has been totally systems-based for some time. I think you'd be happy with either school. Best of luck!

And yet more proof that everybody is unique and sometimes you just gotta go with that "feeling". I find it odd that people on SDN seem to think that it is near impossible to get in off the waitlist in DMU. I find that very hard to predict. People are saying the class is basically full right now...which it should be...the interview time period is over. But come May, there should be some people find out from other schools, dropping seats in different locations so there should be some movement.

I'd just like to think that I have at least SOME chance of getting into DMU. What a stressful process from beginning to end...I guess I don't have too much to worry about since I'm in at 2 places already and don't have to worry about going somewhere.

I agree Iceman. The best movement for waitlists is usually around May, especially with that being the "drop multiple acceptances" deadline for allopathic schools. I didn't apply to DMU, but most of the people that give advice on waitlist movement on SDN seem to be individuals that got in this application cycle and are going to be first years this upcoming August. The truth is they have no clue, nor do current students or alumi. Wish you the best in getting off their waitlist. If not, you'll be at AZCOM, which is a great school!!! Ya can't lose. 🙂

Exactly...as if waitlist movement was an exact science... Everybody needs a magic 8-ball... Good luck at KCUMB. Any interest in the DO/MBA program? that interested me as well as the systems based curriculum. Cross my fingers for DMU and their DO/MHA program. Do you know how the multiple acceptance deadline works? (I applied too late to understand that.) I'm just wondering how long if I get into UIC, that I will be able to hold onto UIC and AZCOM til I decide DO or MD for sure. UIC has an MD/MBA program too... Just not sure I want to stay in Chambana forever...which is where I am right now...(6 more years in Champaign-Urbana...not sure about that one)

Hmmmm.....I think the trafficking deadline for allopathic schools should be this week or next week. Students with multiple acceptances at M.D. schools must hold no more than one acceptance and drop the remaining offers. In turn, all allopathic schools must inform their students by this deadline whether they are accepted, wait-listed, or rejected. If you're wait-listed, you could wait up to the first day of classes....no telling. As far as D.O. schools go, I think each school provides a deadline that the student must accept by to reserve a position. I haven't heard of an absolute deadline when D.O.s with multiple acceptances must drop all but one acceptance. I don't know if this helps much; however, I do know that UIC must get in contact with you soon, so you should be hearing any day now. Good luck w/ DMU. I can understand the Urbana-Champaign thing. I didn't apply to DMU b/c I lived in Omaha, NE for 4 years (which is a lot like Des Moines). I liked Omaha, but wasn't ready to spend at least another 4 years there. Good luck! 🙂

Hey, my friend that interviewed with you is on your special list too! Are you sure everyone last year on that list got accepted and it is different than the normal waitlist?

They must have really liked the last group that was there. Where was your friend from? I still can't place who was where and who I was talking to. There were like 10 people and they were all guys...
I'm pretty positive about the whole "provional acceptance". I talked to the director of admissions and he seemed VERY positive and reassuring about this most likely turning into an acceptance. It was a very tough decision to give up my KCUMB seat but I did it. Guess no matter where I go, all those schools are good, DMU, UIC, and AZCOM.

Well, I am giving up a seat at DMU this week, but it is to accept a seat at AZCOM. So, there will be movement on one of your lists. Good luck.

Amusing...I guess we're trading spots...assuming DMU is nice to me here in the future...wonder how often that happens? would stink to have one person on one waitlist and the other on the other waitlist and both are at their number 2 school...and yet they could have traded...? I suppose it might be a little more complicated unless they're the absolute NEXT person on the list.

Hey, my friend that was on the provisional waitlist with siriceman just got in this morning.

really? I hope that is good news for me...I just want to get it solidified. I talk to my friends and they're like "why did you give up a guarantee for med school this fall at KCUMB?" Just didn't have the right feeling and I felt that AZCOM was a pretty good guarantee even though it wasn't absolute...Maybe I'll get a good phonecall...maybe...

Does anybody know of any other schools that do this "provisional acceptance"? It wasn't anything that I had heard of before. However, it's not the first time AZCOM has done it.

I think Touro-MI (I don't know about the other Touros) does something similar.

Did your friend get a phonecall or a letter in the mail?

GOT THE PHONECALL YESTERDAY. I'm finally in to AZCOM. Now begins the summer wait for DMU. Not to say that AZCOM is even the least bit of a disappointment if DMU doesn't eventually say yes. I can definitely get used to the 75 in the winters. It's the 115 in August that will be interesting.

Congrats on your KCUMB acceptance! If you have any questions...PM me. I'm just finishing my second year at KC. You'll love it!

Also, congrats to you others! Isn't it exciting to get that letter? Enjoy your summer!

Good luck with your DMU acceptances. I hope to see you there! The class of 2010 is really going to rock! :horns:
(BTW, you don't want to go to AZCOM with inverted, trust me on this one :meanie: )

Yeah, it'll be cool to be down in phoenix with good ol' inverted. Jbone is a big scary swedish man :meanie: . I'll gladly take 115 in August over being in "The Monks" city, midwest hell if you ask me.

What's the weather like in Virginia? :meanie:

Well 2nd quartile of 128. Looks like I'm going to AZCOM unless there's some MAJOR movement of the waitlist. I'm pretty excited about Arizona. It's gonna be fun.
