My mom called today and said that I had gotten an envelope from KCUMB in the mail. (I'm living in K.C. for the year, originally from MN). She opened it and read a letter inviting me for an on-campus visit followed by an interview. This is scheduled for the 13th of September.

The funny thing is that I hadn't turned in my secondary by the time the envelope was postmarked. Has anyone else gotten an interview to KCUMB for September 13th, and if so did it show up in the mail before your secondary was sent? Is this common for schools? Does this mean that I am "so qualified" that they didn't even need to wait for a secondary before choosing to invite me?

Any insight is appreciated. I guess I feel good, but earlier than I thought I should be feeling good! Thanks-

Not neccessarily, KCUMB while a good school is horific at getting things right. I interviewed there and they passed out more than one secondary at the interview. They seem to operate by the seat of their pants. Good luck though. 😉

I haven't even received a secondary from them. Goodluck!

I too recieved an interview invite for the 13th without a complete 2ndary. Infact, I havent even started the thing yet. However, it looks like they are requesting everything be complete (including rec letters) by interview day. I'll see ya there!

I recieved a secondary from them last week without an interview invite. I had emailed them asking about the supplemental because I had heard from people that it may have been filtered into junkmail. I recieved the reply email with the secondary link the next day.

Congrats on the interviews. Hopefully I'll be getting one soon too!

To those of you who received interviews at KCUMB... when was your application verified and sent out? And, if you do not mind me asking, what are your stats?

MCAT: 8V/8P/10BS - 26P
Science GPA: 3.71
Overall GPA: 3.83
Experience in clinic setting, also volunteering for a year

Anyone interviewing at KC also staying with a student? Or is everyone getting the hotel the school recommends? I was thinking staying with a student might save a few bucks and also give us a chance to talk to a current student before the big interview. Thoughts?

I also got an interview invite a couple days after my secondary was sent....however, all the LOR weren't sent yet. I thought it was sorta weird also, i thought they were sending me a paper secondary.

Anywho, my interview is on 9/13 also. I was thinkin about stayin with a student but it seems like a hazzle for the student which could make it for me. So decided to rent at quartagehotel.

I am living in KC right now so I will not be staying with a student or getting a room. I sure hope that it's not 100 degrees when we interview! My suit will be hot as hell that day... even a long sleeve shirt and a tie would be hot! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for cool weather. It's going to be a long day (9-4 p.m.) and I don't want pit stains and swamp a$$ when I sit down to interview with the faculty...

Good luck you guys and congrats on getting an interview so soon. 🙂

It's a bit frustrating for me because I sent in all of my stuff the day I got my secondary but haven't yet received an interview invite. 🙁

Are you all Missouri people? Maybe they have a cut off and MO peeps with certain requirements get automatic interviews?

I guess I have to remember that I don't have the stats that I should. Hopefully I will get an interview invite soon.

Two of the docs I work with (one wrote my main LOR) are both alumni from there. They are awesome docs and go over things with me a lot. Hopefully my medical experience and knowledge will make up for my grades & not so hot MCAT. 😳

haha!

hey gang. i cant believe im writing to all you like this. i finally made it into kcumb. and started classes and everything. such a long way from WHEN AM I GOING TO GET A SECONDARY?!?!?!

it really is a great place. a few days into classes and we already had a guest lecturer on stem cell research, the president of stowers medical research. coolness.

im really enjoying my time here. if by some miracle you get accepted here, dont hesitate to get aboard. they told us class statistics. this was the first year they had a majority women over men. kinda funny. also approx 3.5+ gpa and 8.3+ mcat. these were the highest averages they had in a class yet. and the recent class to take boards had a greater than 95% pass rate.

one negative i had going in was id heard some crazy things about strictness on professional stuff. i think those ppl that complained had never been out in the real world where professionalism is as common as breathing. this place is awesome.

they also stress to us all this is NOT a competitive atmosphere, we are ALREADY in!!!!! everyone is SO helpful, teachers, administrative staff, and especially our upperclassmen.

after the first day of class, you know for sure you made the right choice.

good luck!

I don't know if we'll need a miracle... they were the ones who contacted us without having any supplemental information! I would imagine that they are somewhat interested, at least that's what an invite tells me.

Thanks for the info though, very insightful!

I got an interview invite as well in the mail today. Hadn't even looked at the secondary they sent me. This place is expensive though, but I'll probably look to interview. My date was 09/20.

Stats:

CUM 3.31
SCI 3.36
MCAT 28O - Retaking Saturday
Current work as a Physician Assistant

I spoke with admissions via e-mail and they said they sent out the interview letter on 08/16/05 and that my date was for 09/26/05. They didn't receive my LORs until today.
yeah!

May I ask you what you made on your MCAT? I don't know if my score is high enough to even get an interview at all. Thanks.

Yay i got an interview too. Mine is 9/26/05. I was thinking of staying with a student like some of you have mentioned, but I need somewhere for 2 nights. There aren't any flights back to Connecticut late enough so I'll just have to wait until Tuesday morning. Anyone else that's interviewing that day I would definately be interested in meeting up. I think i'm just going to book a room at the Holiday Inn Express that they talk about (and I found it online for $71.90 a night).

Congrats to everyone!!

Ummm... the same thing happened to me with Western... I can't afford the flight (or the damn 2ndary fee, either 🙄 ) I was planning on submitting my 2ndary when I got paid, but that won't be until September 1st! ARGH! 😱

what to do?

I got the KCUMB invite today also. I found out during my MCAT break. 🙂

I was just reading the interview packet and it says the secondary and letters of recommendation must be in prior to your interview. I have no problem with the secondary, I'll knock that out. However, my school will not send any LOR's until my August MCAT score comes in. I am going to call them and see whats up. Any ideas?

Tell KCUMB, and they shouldn't have a problem. They want them in so they can make a decision and offer you a seat ASAP.

Damn it!! I would love to have a seat ASAP.

So what's the furthest you would drive to an interview? KC is like a little over 5 hours from me. I could catch a flight at the 1/2 way point for under 150 bucks, but don't know if it would really decrease the amount of travel time just the drive time. Actual travel time may increase now that I'm looking at it. But it might be nice just so I don't have to drive. Any thoughts what others are doing?

If money is not EXTREMELY tight I would fly. Why would you want to deal with the hassle?

soundman-

Just drive it. You'll save a lot of money and really 5 hours isn't that bad. Just break it up.

When I came down to KC earlier this summer to visit I had about a 7.5 hour drive, and it was fine. Just bring some tunes, drinks, and food and you're set.

does anyone know how long KCUMB usually takes to send out acceptance letters once interviewed?? and how long we have to accept or decline the acceptance?

I am curious about this to. 🙂

is anyone going to the sept 26th interview from Oklahoma? if so...you wanna carpool?

yea 5 hours isn't that big of a deal. Secondly I don't think acceptances can begin to go out until October 15th, atleast for allopathic last year that was the case.

How are you guys filling out this secondary. Just writing it or what else? I might cut/paste and then photocopy, but don't know just yet.

I read in one of the interview feedback threads today about interviewing at KCUMB. I don't remember the exact date but she posted on SDN about it in January. She said that her interview was on a Tuesday and she recieved her acceptance letter in the mail that Saturday! Crazy fast, huh!?!? Hopefully we are all so lucky!

THAT WOULD BE SICK!!! I want to get an acceptance in hand early so I could have some certainty.

well i guess it's nice to get an early acceptance but what if that's not your first choice?? then you're screwed.

Does anyone know how long we can wait before we have to accept it?? Or how much the deposit is??

It is $1,000. If accepted before Nov 15th, you have until Dec. 14th, then I think I read if accepted b/w Nov.-Jan 15 is 30 days, then Jan-June 15th it is 2 weeks, then due immediate after that.

Thanks for that info. Where did you get that info?? was in on the website??

Yeah, but I had to do using the search function on the site, I typed in "fees."

I have been saving up money for the application process. I figure that if accepted I will secure myself a spot. Therefore, I will be going to a medical school next year no matter what. I know $1,000 is a lot but I think its worth it.

Sure. 24Q, nothing spectacular. I decided not to retake this year after all.
My updated AACOMAS gpas came out to be 3.4 and 3.54 science. I have a lot of med experience as a phlebotomist and a clinic tech.

When I received the letter it said that the interview invite was based off of my AACOMAS application. I also submitted my secondary and LORs but the LORs didn't arrive until 3 days after they sent out the invite.

Good luck to you!!! Hopefully you will get yours soon.

I am but my hubby is driving me. We're staying at the Westin Crown Center about 5 minutes from the school per online maps. Kind of scary bc I don't know anything about this hotel. It's a Sheraton though and they have awesome comfy beds so I'll be feeling nice and relaxed in the morning!!

Good luck and I'll probably see you there!!

We have about a 3.5 - 4 hour drive, not too bad. I'd drive it because most of the roads there are an easy drive. Coming from the South on 71 it isn't a bad ride at all. If I interview in Columbia I'll drive too and it is more 5-6 hours from here. Quicker if you know the right back roads.

You'll save a lot more driving but I'd make sure to get some recovery sleep in before your interview.

who here interviewed with me on the 13th? just curious 🙂

I did. I'm the guy from San Diego in the gray suit. Who were you? How did the interview go? Mine was pretty chill, just a couple of ethical questions caught me off guard.
For those asking, they told us that we would have a decision by mail in about 2 weeks, so it is a pretty quick decsion.

Interesting, I didn't realize they don't have to wait until October 15th to make decisions.

I am sooo excited. I have my interview on October 6th. I got my invite a couple of weeks ago before even sending a secondary or letters. Because I got the interview offer I decided to wait a little and get all of my other secondaries done earlier since I know interviews need those. I knew KCUMB wouldnt look at any of it until the interview anyways. I will get them done this weekend so they are there in plenty of time for the interview. I go to school in lawrence, KS so I do not have to worry about finding a place to stay. I met with a man named Phil Byrne on tuesday who has something to do with recruitment and talked to him about the interviews. He told me that 86% of the people interviewed get accepted. He said to just be confident about what I have done and everything will be fine. He also said 5-10 days is their goal of informing people of their acceptance. I can't wait. I will definitely put down that $1000 if I get accepted even though it probably is not my first choice. maybe second or third.

Hey, I was there on the 13th also. I was the tall blonde white guy from MN. Wait weren't we all white!? 🙂

SigPi and FS-Pro, what did you think about the school? If/when you get accepted, do you think you will attend, or are you waiting on other schools? I personally have this school ranked 3rd out of 4.

I was the average height curly headed white guy from illinois. Will def put down my deposit if accepted, however, I interview with my state MD school in a week and they are my #1. CCOM would probably be #2, and KC #3 but that might change... because I'm a little torn: I'm a big fan of the integrated systems approach of KCUMB, but their clinicals are suspect I think...I'm really not pumped about 1) moving to ohio, mich, or any other town in BFE depending on my "lottery" match and 2) possibly moving every time my block in a core site is finished. That is where I think CCOM has their stuff down, more of a standard approach but awesome clinicals, all in chicago, most university affliated, many with top notch PGY programs. We'll see how the CCOM interview goes. Anyone interviewing there on Ocotober 3rd????
