I just got an acceptance to KCUMB and I have an interview at TOURO. Should I spend the money on a plane ticket to California, or should I turn down the interview? I would love to hear anyones opinion on these schools.

I haven't seen KCUMB and didn't appply, but I would still interview at TUCOM if I were you. I was pleasantly surprised when I interviewed at TUCOM-NV and am really impressed with the school. If it's anything like the NV branch, you might want to check it out. I'd rather lose $600 on an interview than possibly not see a school that would fit me better. You only go through this once, enjoy it.

congrats on kcumb! i haven't interviewed at either so i don't count, but if i were you and i had the funding, i'd go just to visit the bay area--if nothing else 😎 but that might not be realistic. i'm the type of person that wants to see and do everything, though, so maybe you shouldn't trust me. do you see yourself moving there? is kcumb location better for you?

I say go! As somebody up there said, if nothing else, just to see the bay area! But really, I think if you're even wondering if you should choose KCUMB or not, then that is a sure sign that you should definitely take in all your options and check the school out. You applied there, so you obviously have an interest in it. This only leaves the money issue, so if you can afford it I think it's best to take the interview.

I was also accepted to KCUMB, and currently have interviews at both Touros. I however have decided to forego those interviews because of geographic issues that would arise with my wife and I. With that said, I agree with the above poster who said enjoy the interview process, you only do it once. Check them out, you never know!

I'm an MS1 at KCUMB and I don't think you would go wrong here. In fact, I think it's a tremendous school with a great reputation. That being said, if you can spare the money it's always good to take any interviews you can, since you'll never know what you'll find...

I really like Touro, Nevada and am interviewing at KCUMB tomorrow. I think the KC school is more established and has a good reputation. I would certainly compare board pass rates and clinical rotations. Touro, NV was at 87% for COMLEX I. I couldn't get a straight answer from Touro, CA about board pass rates or rotations.

Best of luck! It's a tough choice regardless.
:luck:

I'm an MSI at KCUMB and was in the same situation that you were last year (with several more schools involved). But I had interviewed at KCUMB and got the invite to Touro. In the end, I obviously chose KCUMB and I made that decision based on what was most important to me. I LOVED the idea of a systems-based curriculum, and KCUMB had been doing it, seeing high board scores and I felt good about it. I also considered the cost to myself not only to fly out to CA for the interview, but to come home when I needed/wanted to. Don't get me wrong, my family is in WI so I still have a 10 hr drive, but that's the thing.....it is driveable. My boyfriend lives here with me and his family is in MN. Easier for him too. This fall we had several weddings, babies born, etc, and I am glad we lived closer than CA or Maine (where I also applied).

Good luck with the decision. By the way, do you have strong political or religious views? You don't have to answer that, but if you do, I might be able to give you a bit more insight into whether or not KCUMB would be a good fit for you.

ingrid, I'd be interested in hearing your explanation on that last part.

The curriculum at KCUMB is one thing that puts them VERY high on my list. After sitting in on some lectures last year, I loved that format.

Either school would be a good choice...you will find that KCUMB (as a former graduate when it was UHS) is a community leader and has been working endlessly to develop more research and MBA programs in an effort to diversify. Furthermore I believe the school did a fantastic job in preparing me for residency. I was chief resident in the Emergency Medicine Residency program at Wright State University.
As a rule there are some consitently solid Osteopathic Programs (the old guard) Kirksville, Midwestern (chicago), KCUMB, DMU, PCOM, Nova, Ohio, and MSU

I was in the same position you are in now. It was my choice to forego the interview at Touro completely for financial reasons. Deep down I knew I would not pay the deposit if I were to be accepted. Reason being is I feel it is important for my wife to have an opinion as to where we spend the next four years. She would not be able to visit Vallejo before Touro requires a full deposit. Which led me to decide that I would not be willing to risk the possibility of losing my deposit. Therefore, I would rather spend the money it would cost me to go to the interview on KCUMB or another school that does not require a deposit as quickly as Touro. Good luck.

did anyone else interview at all 3 schools? KCUMB has high passing rates and sounds like it preps you well...anyone know the passing rate of board exams for touro-CA? how does it prep drs for residencies?

I was in a similar position as you were. I was accepted at KCUMB and then flew to Touro-MI for an interview. I also got an acceptance from there as well.

Originally, I am from the Bay Area of California. In my comparisons of the two schools I have decided to forgo all other interview offers and attend KCUMB in the fall.

It seemed as Touro-MI had very nice residency matches...and spending the last fifteen years in the bay area...this area is home to me.

However, I felt that the curriculum at KCUMB would be a much better fit and I left Touro-MI with a few hesitancies regarding the new curriculum they will be implementing in the fall.

I do think if you can afford it...check it out. I did it just because I did not want any regrets or "what if's" left in my mind. Thus I ended up buying two plane tickets from Florida and feel entirely confident in my decision!

I interviewed and accepted at all three. I just had an amazing feeling from KCUMB and their stats are good. I really liked that they fully supported their students (a whole building dedicated to study areas, nice residence hall/aparments, good instructors, excellent pass rates). Touro, Cali, as I mentioned above, did not give straight answers about their board pass rates. Touro, Nevada was at 87% and was at least working on getting it higher. Kansas City also is much older and really feels like an established institution, but not so much so that it is entrenched in tradition.

Like a lot of people here, I interviewed at both KCUMB and TUCOM (MI campus).

And as much as I love the Bay area... Vallejo (specifically Mare Island) is a far cry from San Francisco. But what really made my decision (outside of overall living expenses), was the curriculum. I do have a friend over at Touro who is quite content there (she chose that school mostly due to its proximity to her home town San Mateo).

If you have the means, I would go ahead and make the trip out there to visit both campuses. Don't base your judgement solely upon us studentdoctor-trolls. 😎 Find out for yourself. Heheh, I totally don't regret visiting TUCOM (whose interview ended pretty early in the day), since I rented a car and spent the rest of the day walking/driving around San Francisco. It is a gorgeous city. 😛
