Hey gang

So I found out that I was called up from the waitlist for Kcumb but am all set to move into my place in Blacksburg for Vcom. I really liked both schools and appreciate that Kcumb is more established and has excellent stats- Vcom has pretty good stats as well but it is still fairly new and they really push family med there. Anyone have any thoughts about which program you would choose if you had the option? I've been pulling my hair out all day.

Vcom would be much closer to my family and has a more "homely" feel but Kcumb has awesome resources but a huge class size - nearly 300 eek

Any thoughts would be fantastic!

Thanks folks

KCUMB is such a good school. I'm incredibly biased because I shadowed an AMAZING ortho doc that went there.

Def getting some serious support for kcu, for sure leaning that direction

At this point of the game, I would choose VCOM-VC if you're housing is all set up. You do have great research inst nearby with VT right?

KCU is great if course, I'd just think it'd be tremendously stressful to transfer over right now! But if you wanna join the cool crew, we will be here 😉

I'm not sure what KCUMB has to offer over VCOM-VA but you should go wherever you will be happiest I'd say. Also I wouldn't go as far as to say VCOM pushes family medicine, but they are definitely primary care orientated. Every DO school pushes out like 50-60% primary care doctors anyways. With that said I'd personally go with VCOM (going there) based on class size (290 sounds huge) and research opportunities at VTC and VT, but KCUMB has no attendance which also sounds nice.

It is going to be a nightmare to get everything set up in a week

It's still possible though! Honestly in 1 week you can get everything together (room, electricity, water, cable) all in about 2 days IMO. I just died about 6 different things today to make sure when we move everything is set up to the best of out abilities.

KCU is nice because it's minutes away from the metropolitan area and there are a multitude of resources for you (hospitals, stowed research institute, KUMC, UMKC).

Not that you will have a ton of time to do it, but there seems to be some amazing places for food, drink, and fun in KC as well. I'm not sure about the location of where VCOM-VC is.

Good luck deciding!

Depends on how much of a home body you are I'd say. Are you single, not too homebound, can be spontaneous enough to pick up and move, like the chances of attending a school with a great reputation? Go KCU. Do you prefer the support of home, like things to be a little more familiar, are you okay with the thought of being at a good school (good school I'm sure but probably not KCU)? GO VCOM. It's probably more complicated than that but there's my two cents.

.........going blind..........

I'm going to VCOM, you can join me! But really, go where you feel most comfortable. As others have said, a week of stressful logistics changes is nothing in comparison to being at a school you love for 4 years.

I say rep doesn't really matter. Go where you're more happy. If you can see yourself happy at VCOM for the next 4 years? Stay.
If you see yourself leaps and bounds happier at KCU? Go there.

Except it does since certain residencies will only look at students from certain DO schools.

Your COMLEX/STEP scores matter much more than what medical school you went to.

As someone who knows PDs/ has them as family members this doesn't paint the whole picture. I know for a fact these people will only consider DO students from certain schools

Kcu is definitely the better choice.

But isnt tht regionally dependent? Like PDs in Cali will be exposed to more students from Western and Touro-CA then PCOM and NSUCOM. So even though they are all good schools, they might pick the schools tht they have experience with

Same with other areas. NJ PDs are going to know more about Rowan students than KCU students.

I do agree tht KCU has a better program but for some people geographic factors or being close to family/SO makes them pick a different school.

I'd say this is true to an extent. For example, University of Michigan medical center only allows for DO students from 5 schools (one of them being KCU) to rotate at their hospital. KC isn't regionally close to MI, so I'd say there's an inkling of reputation that goes behind specific DO programs.

I spent four years at Virginia tech and I'd say the town is pretty awesome. It's really VT centric so you can find a bunch of college things to do around town and college things to do (college parties, intramurals are big, great for division 1 sports, good college associated fundraiser events and stuff, definitely safe area) so if you came from a small school and are a little eager to get the big, fun, university experience, you can't go wrong with VCOM.

On the other hand, Blacksburg isn't a big city. If you're not interested in hanging out with a bunch of early 20s people all the time, then KCU is probably more fun. Personally, I voted KCU, cause I've been through undergrad and got my fill. It would be nice to catch a game at VT every now and then but I just wouldn't be hyped up about that kind of stuff anymore. KCU would offer more things I'd be interested in, as far as restaurants and more adult entertainment outside of college bars. Good luck bud
