I am applying to DO schools this summer for fall 2014 matriculation. I am also trying to look into SMP programs (KCUMB specifically, I live in KC) as an option if I don't gain acceptance this cycle.

Has anyone here attended their 1 year MS-Biomedical Sciences with the intent of Matriculating into their DO program after graduation? Also what is the success rate of SMP students matriculating into their program? Or what is required of it (like gpa, etc)? I have seen on their website that to gain admission to DO as SMP student, min MCAT of 19 required, but it doesn't mention anything else about it other than that as a footnote.

Any information is appreciated

I go to Rockhurst University, and when the rep from KCUMB came to RU, she said doing a one year masters program had "no effect on acceptance" but i have heard from other students, that doing the masters gives you a very good chance because much of the faculty/adcom will know who you are

The question is whether it gives you a good chance to interview since once you get an interview youre chances are good here.

The reality is it definitely couldn't hurt, especially with getting to know faculty and admin to give yourself a good name and prove your abilities and work ethic. If you are planning to go in and prove yourself through the SMP then I say do it but if you are hoping to get a major advantage in admission there are probably other SMP's that are more suitable. When I interviewed there on their first (or second) interview day of the season, there were two in my group who were in the Master's program, one had been rejected the first time around, did their SMP and reapplied and had an interview (no idea if he got in).

KCUMB is a rock solid program and under Dean Hahn I would be confident that the school will be moving in the right direction, good luck to you!

I have no doubt that it will help you get in. I didn't go through the program but have several friends that did. First off, not sure if things have changed in the program slightly since I was there on campus (I'm a 4th year), but if you do well enough, you're garunteed a COM Interview. If I remember correctly, there is some sort of GPA requirement for this. But if you do well enough in the COB program to get an interview, the vast majority have a good chance of getting into the COM.

Hope this helps
