The Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences has invited me to an interview. I was excited about that until, in looking through their website, I suddenly discovered that they require 3 credits of Genetics (which I never took)! I am deficient in that one requirement.
Their website says, "All of the [pre-req classes like the Genetics class] are required to be recorded as ?taken? or as ?not yet taken/to be completed? (NY) on the Academic Record section of your AACOMAS application (see ACOMAS application instructions)." I didn't know about the genetics class back when I filled out the primary app so I didn't even mention it on there.
So, do you think I should accept the interview invite even though I don't have the genetics class and didn't mention it at all on AACOMAS app? Would it be okay to wait until I see if they accept me to make plans to take the genetics class?

I would call the school and see where this is going to leave you standing...I wouldn't want to waste the money on the interview if you really do need this class and have no plans of taking it.

I ran into this problem at a bunch of schools. At Nebraska they wanted another biology class. At Colorado they wanted 2 more English classes. At USC they wanted another bio class.

Here's the problem: if you don't get accepted until May, it may be too late to find an acceptable class, or you get stuck having to work on the class in the summer. I spent May-June working on 2 independent-learning English classes. Bio classes are very hard to find as correspondence courses, and it may be impossible to enroll in a regular semester course if you only get to enroll after all the regular undergrads (this was my problem). If (God forbid) you get waitlisted until July or August, it will be too late. So it depends on how good the rest of your app is.

I ended up withdrawing from the schools that required those bio courses, because they were absolutely inflexible on the requirement.

Go ahead and proceed to the interview. They are not going to base your acceptance/denial on whether or not you took genetics. You most likely will be accepted with the stipulation that you have to complete genetics before you start school there.

A few of my classmates did this.

i was also accepted on that basis, if you look around online, there are about 3-4 places that i saw that offer genetics completely online. if you are up for it, then go for it, kcumb is a great school, and to miss it for this class that you didnt have would be a shame. additionally, they tell everyone that they require so many specific classes because they like for everyone to be close to the same playing field when starting so they can get going right away. i have not yet started so maybe an ms1+ would be more suited to comment on that...

I'm an MS4 at KCUMB and I did not take genetics. I had a population biology class that had a lot of genetics in it. I asked them and they had me get my prof to write a letter saying that and they waived it. It's kind of just a formality anyway. So if you have had any class with some genetics in it you may get it waived as well. Hope this helps.
I agree that KCUMB is a great school and isn't worth passing up even if you do have to take it online or something.

on a side note, I have never seen anyone who is unhappy at KCUMB. Does everyone love it there? I have an interview and it is my number one school, just curious.

Love it. Except doing rotations away from KC... I loved it while I was there during years 1 and 2.

I really don't see unhappy students here. 👍
KCUMB, the best kept secret of all the osteopathic colleges.

When did you get Supp applic for KCUMB... that is the only one I am still missing (out of 10 school). I contacted them today and they said they are having trouble printing out the suppl since they changed names... is this guy just BSing me.. or what. Could it be that you are in state... so you got it first.

dood... its possible he is in. i guess if you are that worried about, ask them to send an email or with old header nfo on it... at any rate, you are still quite early in the game so dont worry about it too much.

Cool Dreams, are you already in KCUMB, did you apply EDP. Your quote says Class of 2009?

nah, its a weird thing, but basically i defered a year, and was already accepted last year.

they sent me an interview invite letter, but in the letter they said that they still do not have the supplemental applications printed and that it would be sent to me early September, so don't worry about it. 😉

I just received an interview invite for them in late Sept, and just had a couple general questions about the school.I really liked the way the curriculum looks.I just was wondering for anyone currently there, if there is a decent amount of diversity in the class/area??....That is a very big thing for me when deciding where I want to go...any help would be appreciated! 🙂

I am not sure what you mean by diversity, but if you mean ethnic there is much. I sat in on a class there (about 230+ students!) and there was a lot of diversity. I was all races represented (asian, caucasian, black, mexican, and the list goes on). As far as gender diversity, they try to get a 50/50 ratio, but it looked like more females to me. It is an osteopathic school, so they really go out of their way to make the class diverse. Hope that helps, take the interview, you'll love it!

I have a question about KCUMB's reqirements also. I live in KC and it is definitely my #1 choice (for more reasons than just location). But I was looking on their website and it says they require 16hrs. of Chem with 3 of those being Biochem. So, does it matter what classes make up those 16 hrs? Maybe I'm a little behind for not knowing this, but I thought generally it was classes not hours that were required. I will have 15hrs with just ChemI, ChemII and OChemI. Once I take Biochem will I have fulfilled the requirements even without OChemII?? Sorry if this sounds like trolling. I should probably know the answer to this. *Hoping for  *

as far as i know, that is correct. you may also be able to substitute biochem for orgo1... I DONT KNOW THAT FOR SURE but i would ask them if it were me.

No way:

Ochem 1 is mandatory.

Also, Genetics should be too, since the MCAT biological sciences section is basically ochem, genetics, and a little physiology.

spoken like a true kcumb adcom... oh wait....

seriouslly... just ask them, i dont know for sure, but they do leave that part vague.

hey dude, same thing happened to me with the requirements thing. I sent them syllabi from the bio classes I've had because they combine them at my school. they have straight bio but it's not what the pre-meds are supposed to take. so anyhow, i sent them the syllabi and they are sending them to a committee. I'm scheduled for an interview on the 27th but before I go, I want to make sure I don't have to take too many more classes. just depends.
