Guys,

Keep it real with me... as the title says... GPA 3.3, Science GPA 3.3, 5000+ hrs of shadowing, DAT Scores: PAT 23, RC 21, QR 22, Bio 19👎, GC 20, OC 22, TS 20, and AA 21. Applications are late because AADSAS didn't receive one of my transcripts so I had to run around and resend. It is now October... Took the DATs 10/11/11... I'm feeling pretty hopeless right now... Any input would be greatly appreciated. Applied to VCU, NYU, WVU, UMD, Temple, Howard, and UPENN (only cuz my dad got his DMD there... don't know if that helps any)...

Like I said, keep it real with me.

Thankss

It's late in the game, but your stats are good enough for an acceptance I think, whether it be this cycle or the next. Keep your chin up.

Based on your stats you should be okay. Based on when you submitted, you'll likely be waiting for post-dec

Jeebus, 5000+ hours shadowing lol?

I hope you mean 500hrs cause they will think your lying if you say 5000... Not saying you never did 5000hrs but kinda hard not to doubt you have done 208 COMPLETE days of shadowing in the 4yrs youve been in undergrad.

I think he probably works as a assistant. I've seen people claim 5K hours from working.

If so, they wouldn't be listed as shadowing hours but rather work experience within the field...

I smell fish or a special circumstance!

Working in the field is not shadowing

While I completely agree with you, I think it's the situation in this case. It's insane to think someone did traditional volunteering for 5000 (or even 500) hours.

The OP mentioned that their father is a dentist - I imagine that's where the 5000 hours came from. Working implies getting paid, and if you're helping in a parent's office they often don't have you on the payroll. Therefore, any time spent there could be classified as shadowing.

Back to the original question, stats look good, late submission is not so great, you'll probably get at least one post-Dec interview. Good luck!

Actually I've been a dental assistant since I was about 16 working full time about 50 hours a week during the summers, and about 20-30 hours a week part time during the school year... When I'm not at school, I'm at work.

I didn't volunteer, nor did I say I volunteered. Simply says 5000+ hours of shadowing. On my AADSAS it asks if it was volunteered or paid, I put paid. It's not like I'm cheating lol this is ridiculous to even argue about. Besides the point...

That's not SHADOWING.

Shadows do NOTHING.

You are VOLUNTEERING.

Put it in the correct section.

In your case, you would have to put it in the Extracurricular / Volunteer / Community Service section.

I am a full time assistant and guess where I placed that? Under Work Experience, simply because I get paid.

Good for you buddy. Too bad under the professional experience section of the app it allows you to check both shadowing and paid. Definition of shadowing: following and watching someone closely. What do you think you do as a dental assistant? You sit and watch carefully tending to the needs of a dentist. At any rate, it doesn't matter what you consider and it is besides the whole point of the post. Another point is that it is my JOB and not volunteering, therefor, I do not put it under volunteering but instead professional experience. Thanks for the advice.

What? That's weird. At the time when I filled it out, I did not recall such an option. But I stand by the definition of 'job' 👎 under google as "A paid position of regular employment."

What do I do as an assistant?...
I'm pretty darn busy because there is always something that needs to be done and I certainly do not have the leisure to be the dr's shadow.

But yes, you are right. That is besides the point. Whether you have a chance or not... only time will tell but most schools have already filled up or are in the process of filing up their pre-dec interview spots. Fact of the matter is, they will send out a round of invites on Dec 1st and whatever rejections they receive... they will scoop up the post-dec-ers. So in essence, yes you are at a disadvantage to some extent for being late.

Hey HoangDMDorDDS, I think your scores are pretty solid. Your extensive experience is definitely going to help you.
If your name really is Hoang, I would suggest withdrawing from Howard and saving your $$ because it is mainly for URMs.
