What did you do in between to improve your application?
Not really sure. I was limited to trying for IU for the first couple of years after undergrad (I was married at the time) then I branched out into and applied to more MD programs, but got the cold shoulder (MD schools are very xenophobic toward out of state students). At some point I discovered the osteopathic route and realized that that is the philosophy I believed in so I pursued it.
IMO, the MD schools cared more about numbers than anything else (or at least IU) and the DO schools seem more concerned with who you are, your dedication, and your ability to become a good physician.
After undergrad I spent a couple of years substitute teaching and coaching a swim club. I enrolled in a MS program at IU med school, which didn't exactly help my grades (slightly under 3.0 gpa for the year) but I was taking classes with 1st years and I had a couple of professors write letters for me (I am guessing that med school professor LOR's probably hold more weight).
I also gained a bit more confidence in myself and kept plugging away, I think that made a bit of a difference too.
I also had applied to a nursing program as a back up which I mentioned in application essays where I could. I think that helped demonstrated my dedication to the art.
