Hi everyone! This is my first post, but I've been perusing these boards for a few days...

Anyway...

Sorry to hear about OSU, Sarah. It was also my first interview and I was super nervous, but I didn't think I did that bad. Like you, I was also rejected... You're not alone.

Best of luck with your next interview - wherever that may be! Mine is tomorrow at UPenn and I feel considerably more confident.

DaNNo: Sorry about the OSU rejection, but good luck with UPenn tomorrow! These interviews seem to get easier as you go along. Did your interviewers at OSU give you an indication of how "qualified" your application was? They talked to me about mine, but I'm getting pretty nervous now. Especially since you guys thought your interviews went well... maybe it's just the relaxed atmosphere at OSU that makes everyone feel confident.

DaNNo, you are having your interview at Penn? I have not heard one word from them other than the postcard in the fall.

Does anyone know if they are done with interview requests and/or sending out rejections?

And are they email or USPS?

Thanks!

When I talked to Rob at Upenn earlier in the month he said that they would be sending out interview invites (by snail mail) into March. He said that there really was no method to the order in which people got invites, although interview dates are organized by area of interest (SA, LA, etc.). Hopefully we'll hear from them soon. As far as rejections, I have no idea.

I talked to someone at Penn last week. They said that they interview through March, so don't worry 😀. I am pretty sure they send out interview notifications by USPS.

EDIT: Same info as above. At least they are consistent with what they tell people!

A lot of the Penn first years are excited to see you guys coming to interview. It'll be nice to see what it's like from a student perspective. Good luck! 🙂

I've started to get worried about UPENN because, from what everyone here has been saying, the SA interviews are in January. I put SA on my postcard and seeing that it is already 1/10 I'm wondering if that is a bad sign.

I feel the same way Velcro 🙁 I put down lab animal so I have no idea where that would fall. We both just gotta keep our heads up! 🙂

Pretty much every interview is SA except for the LA, equine and research weeks. That's what it seemed to be last year. There's still time!

Yes, OSU did comment on how "qualified" my applications was - they said I had the grades, I had the test scores, and a large amount of SA medicine to boot. I had one of the first interviews at OSU, and they said there was a good reason for that.

However, I didn't much care for my interviewers. I was interviewed by a social worker for the school (the same one I scheduled my interview with) and a LA vet. The soical worker wasn't terrible, but asked a few questions that threw me off (Tell us about your interpersonal skills. -- Not unreasonable, I just wasn't expecting it as I thought the purpose of the interview was for them to gague that themselves). The LA vet, on the other hand, was not at all pleased by my lack of LA experience (about 10 hours compared to about 4000 hours of SA). I was honest and explained that it was due to some poor planning on my part, not hearing back from many of the LA vets I asked to shadow, and then the one LA vet I did find stopped working after a few weeks of my shadowing (he was older, it was a hot summer, blah blah blah). I also explained that it's not that I'm not interested in LA medicine - I'm more than willing to learn. He went on to quiz me on bovine/equine/porcine breeds and diseases (and luckily I was able to name at least 1-2 of each).

The interview felt more like I was being tested. They didn't seem overly interested in getting to know me. It was stressful, and my nerves got the better of me at parts. Though I don't think that bad. But, alas... rejection came.

I later came to find out that OSU weighs 55% of admission on the interview.

Any idea when the research group is?

since i've now done the whole thing... here's how it went for me... hope this answers questions and/or helps you all out...

applied thru vmcas; got emailed with request to complete supplemental application

completed supp app; after a while, given status site address and status said evaluation

received a phone call in early november (don't remember exactly when) to schedule an interview for early December; status site changed to Decision Pending.

Interviewed on 12/16. Site has said Decision Pending until this morning when it said Decision. I think the evaluation of my interview/overall application was postponed due to the holidays.

I called this morning and asked what the decision was and they looked it up for me, said my app was not accepted. I scheduled a phone Application Review (I live in CT so I'm not going back for a face-to-face meeting, which is what they offered first)... I'm doing that tomorrow morning. i'll let y'all know if there's anything helpful when I talk to Dr. Brandt.

Now just waiting on the other 7 schools. :luck:

-Sarah

While they say that the interview makes up 55% that includes all of the subective things in your application. For example that includes your personal statement, letters of recommendation, involvement, strength of schedule etc. So 45% is your GPA/GRE and the rest is 55%.

On my postcard I put LA and SA because I'm interested in both; after reading many posts on sdn I got worried and emailed the adm. dept at UPenn and they said it wasn't an issue... not sure what that means but just thought i'd put it out there... (hopefully it doesn't mean my app is outright rejected, but i guess that is a definite possibility) 😎

Thanks Lailanni and VAgirl! I think I'll give it a shot 🙂

If I can ask, I have an incredibly solid GPA, and I have around 1500 hours of research under my belt (I'm writing an undergraduate thesis), but my actual veterinary experience is sadly lacking (only about 300 hours and only small animal so far). I'm planning on volunteering at an exotic feline sanctuary this semester, but I'm too busy to even work half time at a clinic (I tried that last semester and nearly had a nervous breakdown after only a month haha). Is Davis the kind of school where they'll let experience slide a tad in lieu of a good GPA/GRE combo?

Sorry this question is off-topic and long, and I know that every case is different, but I just wanted to know if anyone had any insight for me. Thanks!

Any idea when the research group is?

I put down lab animal/public health and my interview with penn is on the 18th. Not sure how they are organizing things...

Oh No! I put down research/public health and haven't heard a thing! Now I'm really nervous!

I'm sorry, i didnt mean to make you panic!! They clearly have mulitple days for each area (they interview once a week for two months and there are not 8 different areas that they reserve whole days for). I think they segregate it only large versus small so they can take you to new bolton or not. dont give up yet- you have all the way until the end of feb for interviews at penn!

I am definitely not lab animal or public health, so they must differentiate somehow.Of cousrse, anything can be research and lab animal and public health aren't neccesarily research.

Danno: Thanks for the information. You sound so qualifed it really makes me nervous. Your interview experience sounds completely different than mine though, mine was really relaxed, although I had a really hard interview the day before at Tex A&M. Good luck with other schools!

ri23: Thanks for the info. I couldnt believe that OSU would base 55% of the application process on the interview. It makes much more sense that this includes all the subjective areas as well.

Ahhh I'm so nervous!

I interviewed at OSU on 11/26 and I am still on the deferred list. My interviewers did not mention or ask me to talk about any of my activities or animal experiences, but did more of a character assessment. They didn't really indicate how qualified my application was and I couldn't figure out from them how well me interview was going. Don't get me wrong, they were really nice, just hard to read. I was wondering if anybody else experienced an interview like this at OSU? Hearing about the rejections is making me extremely nervous, especially since OSU is the only school I applied to this year!

I interviewed 1/3. My status page still says referred.

My interview was really laid back, they wanted to basically get to know me for a large part of the time. They did ask some "reality check questions" also, but no ethics questions. I know that I did babble a bit though at times, so I keep replaying my interview in my head thinking of what I could have said that would have been better. Oh well, nothing we can do now. They did say that my application was really qualified with the addition of playing volleyball as a testimony to my time management skills. So hopefully that's a good sign. Although it seems so many qualified apps are being rejected. 🙁

Keeping my fingers crossed. 🙂

The differences in the interviews are due to differences in the interviewers at OSU. While each interviewee is assessed on the same criteria each interviewer goes about assessing it in their own way. In order to get comfortable doing interviews I sat in on a bunch of different interviews and it was amazing how different the interview teams were and how they broached different questions or focused on different areas. So, all in all, even if you think your interview went poorly or well that isn't completely indicitive of your qualifications or whether or not you will be accepted; rather it is a reflection on how your interviewer handles the interview.

A heart-stopping email from Davis today, but just to inform me that my app is complete and that they will be asking for interviews at the end of the month/beginning of Feb. --I'm in-state, FYI.

My status changed to "Decision" today as well, but I don't think I am going to call. I think I will wait for the snail mail to come with my rejection. I feel my interview went really well, but I don't think my GPA/GRE were very competitive, so I am not expecting to get accepted.

Well, I am in Iowa, so I should be preparing myself for my interview in the morning instead of spending all my time on SDN! Good luck everyone at Iowa and Penn tomorrow!

Thanks for the information about the interviews at OSU ri23🙂. That makes me feel a little better lol

😱 already? Oh god I am not ready for this yet, my file there isn't even complete yet! Sorry about your rejection though, I'm sure mine will come soon enough. 🙁

I'm in-state though...anyone in-state hear anything from them?

I'm leaving the country for 4 weeks, so I emailed Davis to check on their timeline, and they said they would not be emailing interview invitations until mid-late February and holding interviews late February-mid March. It sounded like they wouldn't be sending anything until mid February, but I didn't ask specifically about rejections so I'm not positive those wouldn't be sent earlier.

Yeah, I asked them in the office when I went to drop some stuff off the other day. Lucky you to get to have a diversion from all of this by being out of the country. 🙂

I just realized this thread has over 23,000 views. We're not obsessed or anything.... 😀

I only applied to 3 and heard nothing other than my apps are completed. The next month is torture!

Which schools did you apply to, philomycus, if you don't mind me asking? I've applied to 4: got rejected from MO, offered interview at IL, haven't heard from VA-MD or Auburn. I know, VA-MD should starts sending out invitations this week, and people (hopefully me included) should be getting them some time next week.

Got this email today 10 minutes after I got the CSU interview invitation email. I guess this means I am out of the running for Kansas St. I don't really understand the April 15th date though?

"We have scheduled interviews for nonresident applicants in January based on composite GRE scores and science GPA’s. Unfortunately, based on these criteria you were not selected from this year’s nonresident pool of about 800 applicants.

Please be aware that the list for the Class of 2012 will not be finalized until after April 15, 2008.

Hmmm so they used GRE and Science GPA, not cumulative GPA, to give out interviews... interesting. Congrats on the CSU interview btw!

Anyone know about when Tufts lets peeps know its decision(s)? I haven't seen much mentioned in the way of Tufts--or maybe it's just buried back earlier in the bowels of this thread!

Amen!

OSU status just changed to "decision pending" but I haven't been called about an interview - eek!

Tufts said in an email a while back interview dates were feb 6, 7, 11, 12 & 13th and they would send out notifications "a few weeks" before- so hopefully we will be hearing from them soon!

...another any-day-now decision!! Aaaaaa...!!! :scared:

banditalfi: Good luck! Hopefully you'll hear soon! My status page still says referred and I had my interview over a week ago. It never changed to decision pending. Who knows what's going on, but I check that page every 3 seconds. 🙂

My OSU status said decision pending before my interview, after the interview it changed to deferred. I can't figure out what any of this means either! lol

I was told by my interviewers that "deferred" meant that they were going to be continuing to evaluate your application as more interviews are done. She said that only the very top and bottom of applicants will get a definitive decision at first. As the interviews progress, more people will be accepted and rejected until they find the cut off. There's a waitlist in there somewhere too.

After your interview you are given a score based on your objective (GRE/GPA) and subective (interview/recommendation) scores. If you are in a certain low range you are automatically rejected, a certain high range you are automatically accepted. Most people are in that middle range and therefore deferred. Every week the adcomm meets and based on how things are looking with interviews they adjust those cutoffs as needed. Therefore I would probably check you status weekly on Wed/Thurs as they meet on Tues because that is when it is most likely to change.

That's weird about Kansas- I didn't get an interview invite or the rejection email. Hmm...

I called Kansas today after seeing a rejection email had been sent out because I have not heard anything yet either. The lady I spoke to was pretty vague with her answers (and somewhat annoyed with me 😱) but said that everyone will hear within the next 2 weeks. I then asked if there would be any more interview invites and she "no". I then asked if people would be wait listed without an interview and she said "no". So from my conversation it sounds like final decision letters will be going out over the next several weeks, although, the lady wasn't very talkative so I could be misinterpreting things.

I had my Upenn interview today. It was super relaxed. Much easier than OSU - it was more conversational, and I truly felt like they had an interest in getting to know me. I thought it went very well.

At about 8:45 PM tonight, I received a phone call from my 'hot' interviewier - I was accepted!

Congrats Danno! Hopefully we'll see you next year 🙂

How many interview dates are left for SA applicants at Penn? I'm OOS, SA, and I haven't heard at all from Penn since I received the supplemental postcard in late Nov/early Dec. I am getting SO worried!:scared:

For those of you that got interview invites to Tufts, do you have a change on you application status page?
