banditalfi- No, I hadn't heard from Ohio State either which was making me really nervous, but I figured there was a delay due to a transcript problem. They're doing "rolling admissions" this year too, so I'm hoping that's what's going on. The lady I spoke to said they would be going through the applications and doing interview invites for the next month so I think that means there's definitely still hope! 🙂

Is anybody else starting to feel very obsessive compulsive right now? It certainly doesn't help that I'm taking an abnormal psych course right now, I feel like vet school applications are initiating a number of psychological disorders haha...😉

There's a chance I check this board 25 times a day (I'm serious) and compulsively check my OSU status (it has not changed since November). Anyway, I got my supplemental in on 10/5, which I realize is late in the process. My friend got her supplemental in at around the same time and also has not heard anything about an interview (though the week before Thanksgiving they called her and told her they were missing a transcript and that she should hear from them within the next two weeks - well it has been more than two weeks!).

So, yes, I am freaking out more than I can really explain in words. SHOOT I forgot about my column... So, yeah, I'm trying to do a million things right now, including compuslively checking airfare to Columbus, OH for random dates later this month and in January just in case...

This is highly embarrassing to fall on my face like this I am trying so hard to stay positive. Stay focused and not dwell. It's not working.

My GRE scores are average so I am starting to wonder if I am just a bad candidate. It is just hard when the two vets I am shadowing tell me I'll be a great vet and my husband is such a great cheerleader towards this new goal/direction. I feel like I am letting everyone down.

It's tough as a career-changer - sometimes you feel like a class you took a decade ago weighs more in the admissions process than the thousands of hours of experience and other pluses you have.

Don't start thinking you're a bad candidate. It sounds like you have some great veterinary experience, and you must be a smart cookie to go to a service academy! I assume this is your first year applying? Many, many highly qualified people do not get in on their first try. I didn't get in last year and was devastated, but you learn from the first application experience and move on. If this is your goal, you've got to keep on trying.

I agree with VAGirl that you may have too much on your plate right now. Retaking the class is smart, just in case you need to apply next year. Also, in your interviews (or, worst case next year's application), make sure to discuss the factors affecting your past grades. If you can show that your grades have improved over time, that's good too. Having managerial experience is huge, too, whether you're in private practice or leading a research team.

Bottom line - don't give up. It sounds like you have a lot going for you!

p.s. Regarding obsessing - yeah, I'm getting pretty OCD-like as well - checking snail mail, email, AND status pages daily.

Hi everyone, guess its time to introduce myself because i really need support right now. didn't think i would be so devasted, but received a rejection letter from Upenn today dated 11/30 🙁 This is a career change for me as I graduatd over 12 years ago. Had a successful career, ran a business and gave it all up to pursue this. Granted, haven't been at it for very long, but in the last seven months I'm finishing up 4 of the science pre-req's, logged in over 700 hours of vet tech work, working at former job. They didn't even wait for my fall transcripts or GRE scores, as promised. Its so incredibly frustrating. I've been killing myself this year to get it all done. Looks like I'm stuck for another year.

Welcome Chloe! Did you only apply to Penn? If so, I highly recommend applying to more than one school next year. The whole process is so bizarre that you never truly know who will accept you and who won't. Also, most of the people I know who have been accepted have anywhere from 1000 to 3000+ hours of veterinary experience - the extra year really helps with that (we'll see if it works for me this time around!) It seems really crappy to have to wait another year, but believe me, it goes by quickly.

Sorry to hear about the rejection letter. That is a real bummer! The rubric to the admissions process is confusing and I swear, I'll pay for the magic decoder ring that makes sense of it all! Just keep you head up and realize that most applicants actually don't get in on the first try. You are in no way alone feeling so blue. Its justified for sure with all your hard work and dedication. I was absolutely devastated last year after my rejection(waitlisted, then never got off). I only applied to one school last year and for some reason, I just couldn't snap out of the rejection, so I took a few weeks off and regrouped. I'm hard on myself, so I had to realize that this is just a big game and I'll play it until I win! So, I hope you will join me! 🙂

Thanks so much...I will of course keep trying! I actually applied to four schools but withdrew from Cornell and Florida, realizing there was no way they would consider me with still so many pre-reqs to go.

On another note, I saw all that confusion on the boards about Upenn and Postcard. Well, now all of you know that if you received a post card, it means they are reviewing your application and have already sifted through the initial batch. So, I hope you can report back with interview dates and maybe I'll see you there next year 🙂 Trying to stay positive!

Can anyone tell me if they've taken any of their science classes at 2-year schools? I'm considering taking Organic at a community college, bad move?

I'm so sorry to hear about that! As everyone has been saying, admissions is sometimes unpredictable, but you are dedicated and an extra year will really help you get extra experience and make you a much more competitive applicant! Good luck and I hope you realize you are not alone!

I would check with the schools you're applying to, because a lot of them might want upper division organic chemistry and it won't be upper division at a community college.

I'd imagine it's fine for things like Bio I or Chem I though.

I'm sorry Chloeny. What was the forth school that your applied to? I will keep my fingers crossed for you! The admissions process is tough! You'll get there and everything along the way will just make you stronger for when you do become a vet. Good Luck, keep your head up and just keep doing your best.🙂

thanks, OSJ...
applied to Royal Veterinary College in London...got a postcard, but that's it for now. Thinking of Ross not to wait for another year, but don't know about that whole situation...3 years, then apply again for 4th, Caribbean...

Thanks for sharing w/ us. Nice to meet you. Don't be discouraged at all. Many of us right now (myself inc.) are repeat applicants. One of the vets I worked for applied 5X before he got into Penn. When in doubt as to where you can take a class, best thing to do is ask the schools you are applying to. Some of them also have limits on how long ago you took a particular class so watch out for that as well. Good luck.

Thanks so much ShelterGirl. Huge help to hear encouragement coming from others. I have spent a bunch of time debating my next move with my hubby. He is pretty frustrated with me b/c I am so down, supportive but he wishes I would give myself a break. I am trying. Guess it doesn't help that I am on work travel and have finals next week.... just too much all at once.

Somebody else posted that the rejection part is hard and you have to give yourself time to regroup. Guess it is like getting thrown from a horse when you did not expect it… hard to face that fear of rejection again and try again.

I am worried though how the zoo vet is going to take the news. She specifically stated when I started shadowing her that she doesn't normal take undergrads b/c they need to focus on getting in (i.e. grades). I started working with her this past summer '07 and have had great semester the whole time. Still I know it will be a touchy subject with her. She wrote me a amazing letter of recommendation.

Hopefully she will let me continue to work with her… It also stinks because I started at the zoo by shadowing the zoo keepers. They all thought it was silly to apply and made fun of it. I am not the type of person who lets these types of people get to me. However, they are going to really enjoy finding out that I didn’t make it. My hubby keeps reminding me that at least I am trying. Ironically I get along with all the keepers but many of them started out pre-vet majors. So I realize it’s not “me” per say but I represent something in their world. Annoying.

On a funny note, my sister says I should apply to Med school and then apply to vet school and see how the process goes then. She is kidding but thinks this process is insane.
Thanks!

DrKsomeday: I can empathize with you on the co-workers-rooting-for-your-failure thing. --It just makes rejection that much worse. We'll just have to keep reminding each other that those people wouldn't really care if they weren't motivated by petty jealousy and the need to see others fail so that they can feel better about themselves. Chin up, fellow trooper!! 😉

And ChloeNY--I've been thinking of you ever since you posted that question about the RVC. I hope you get good news soon. And I've got that book about how to get into vet school written by a former Cornell admissions staffer, and he recommended waiting on the carribean schools until you've applied (and been rejected) once...not what you want to hear, I know, but hang in there!
:luck:

I'd say, even with bio I or Chem I check with the school. The admissions rep from Va-Md vet school comes to our school each year. She has addressed the subject several times. At least for Va-Md, all required course work must come from accredited 4 yr universities

Is this really true? I've never never seen this requirement before. I took my physics as a 2 year community college because that was the only thing that I could fit into my work schedule.

I just looked at the VMRCVM website, and this is all I saw on their course requirements page about this topic:

"[FONT=Arial,Helvetica]All pre-veterinary course requirements must be completed by the end of the spring term of the calendar year for which matriculation is sought. Courses can be completed at any accredited college or university..[FONT=Arial,Helvetica]".

If you have any specialized knowledge beyond this, please share!!

Well, ok, 3 posts in a row...

You panicked me enough that I called Joyce Massie, the admissions coordinator at VMRCVM. She told me that this is NOT true. Pre-req courses need to be from accredited colleges, but DO NOT need to be from a 4-year college.

Please please please be sure you have your facts straight before posting this kind of stuff. It causes us tightly-wound people to freak out. Thank you!

Boy...Do I hear you about having to face people at work about being rejected...I don't know how I"m going to break the news to the vets I work for after the recommendation letters....And, I think the more experienced techs were sort of laughing at me because they have so much more experience than I do, and now they can gloat. Oh well, can't be too concerned about what other people think. It just kind of feels awful all around.

I only thought about doing organic chem at 2-year, because the college where I'm taking my pre-req's has a very strong science dept. (only about 20% pass with decent grades).

I would say as long as you take orgo at a respectable institution you should be fine. That being said, it always looks better to take courses at prestigious institutions, so use your judgment in terms of time and location.

Don't let what people say online make you reconsider doing orgo at a 2 year college. Check with the schools you are interested in to see if they even care whether or not you take it at a 2 year or 4 year school. They may not. In which case I'd take it at the 2-year school (just my 2 cents). I say this for many reasons...classes are cheaper, they usually have more convenient class times, etc.

Forgive me, but do you actually know this is true? I've heard some accounts that schools don't include in the evaluation relative ease or difficulty of classes based off of where you took different courses.

Now, my speculating is just as likely to be faulty as yours is, but I'm willing to bet that getting an A in orgo at a 2 year school is better than getting a C at a 4 year prestigious school. Perhaps someone will look at the fact that the course was taken at a better school, but that's hard to quantify. The A and over all GPA (or sci GPA or prereq GPA) is much easier to quantify.

But since neither of us is on an admissions committee, we'll never know the actual answer.

Absolutely an A at a less prestigious school is better than a C at a more prestigious one, however schools do consider the courseload of the applicant, which is related not only to the courses s/he has taken, but also to the school. I have spoken to a few people who sit on the boards of admissions committees (mostly those at medical schools, but one or two have been at vet schools) and they say that the school you go to does matter, though (obviously) not as much as how well you do.

The bottom line, from what I understand, is choose a respectable institution where you can thrive.

From Cornell's site: A bonus of up to 5 percent may be awarded by the Admissions Committee for quality of academic program. Factors considered in giving this bonus are: enrolling in a challenging curriculum, carrying a full course load to completion, and exceeding minimum preveterinary course requirements.

From CSU: Does it matter where I obtain my undergraduate degree?
Essentially, no, but it will be necessary for you to take the required prerequisite courses, and you will need to provide evidence that you can handle a rigorous upper division science curriculum. It would be to your advantage to select an institution that offers the required courses plus additional upper division science courses as part of an undergraduate degree program. In the end, choosing a college or university is a very personal and important decision, and you should weigh a variety of factors including, location, cost, available areas of study, quality of educational experience, recreational activities, weather, extracurricular experiences, and scholarships, to name a few.

From Illinois: Are graduates of the University of Illinois favored for admission?
We encourage students to attend college at a fully accredited institution that provides a challenging curriculum in a setting where they are comfortable enough to become highly successful. Those who attend the University of Illinois are given no preferential treatment in the application process.

Sorry to have jumped on you, banditalfi. I don't disagree with what you're saying. I'm just a little hypersensitive to misinformation (in this case, just perceived, not actual misinformation) and speculation. Right. So. Sorry. 🙂

EEK!

My first rejection letter guys... From UPenn. 🙁 Part of my rejection letter said this... "your application is among those which has been identified as being less competitive. The average GPA for the 2007 entering class was 3.56 with the average GRE Verbal score at 577 and the average Quantitative score at 711...."

My overall GPA was a 3.4, my Verbal on the GRE was a 510, and my Quantitative was a 680. SAD! So since I didn't meet that criteria they rejected me off the bat. No wonder I never got a postcard!

Well... I still have my interview at Kansas State in January and I'm still waiting to hear from Michigan, Minnesota, Davis, Western and Colorado.

My Michigan status page went into file review on 11/19th and it says it takes about 3-5 weeks to review...

Just keeping everybody updated. GOOD LUCK!

Karen

I'm sorry to have been so cryptic in my original statement - I understand that people are bound very tightly right now (myself included, whenever my phone rings I hope its an interview invite - it has yet to be one).

Anyway, good luck to everyone! Right now I need to go into lab (I was due in two hours ago) to finish off isolating some protein and then study for my two finals on Monday. And I feel sick because I convinced myself another latte was a good idea. Pretty much I'm falling apart.

Enjoy the weekend!!

So sorry to hear that Karen! It seems that you were very borderline! Good luck with the rest of your applications!

ChloeNY,

I'm right there with ya. I graduated from undergrad in 1997, grad school in 2000. It's been a long while for me to. This is my second year applying and I work 3 jobs so i get all those vet hours in. Don't get discouraged. they sau on average it takes 2-3 years to get in....I'm hoping this time I'll get in, but if not I'll try one more round. I'm almost 34 and I feel the clock ticking as well.

How about a little stress relief guys? Who wants to come out with me tonight for my birthday? We're going to a local karaoke bar, it's gonna be a blast! 😉

Haha! I would love to! My birthday is on wed

As a nontraditional myself, I find its hard to differentiate yourself on paper, grade wise. I had a horrible 1st degree GPA, 2nd degree was 100% better but I've found that it has still been a huge pain in my behind! 🙁 I'm not proud of my partying ways! GO BUCKS!ha,ha...Anyways....I'm just hoping that someone will look beyond those fun, but crazy years in the early 90's and realize that my GPA is excellent without that included! 🙂 So hopefully all will work out for you and the rest of us nontraditionals! Keep your head up. I find that a lot of nontraditionals tend to have full time jobs, careers, and really work extremely hard in their fields. So, hopefully the great work ethic and dedication will pay off at your other schools! I wish you all the best. You'll make it!

Thanks sweetcaroline14 appreciate your comments. My first school my GPA was not stealer either. Stinks b/c I am wondering if that is hurting me. It shouldn't b/c at that school I took limited science classes due to the schools main mission so hardly any pre-requisites coming off of those transcripts. My GPA was bad not due to partying (I wish) but do to the course load 17-21 credits every quarter and no option to withdraw or drop classes. Add on top of that all the required military stuff at such a school and it was amazing I made it out alive. However, I wish the committees would see this as good preparation for Vet school. Throw in a 2nd degree from a strong biology program and that should make me a good candidate... (?) To bad that doesn't translate as well on paper.

Hope our ship comes in soon!

Oh and I do know that either CO or MO allows you to do the 6 year opt out. Can’t remember which one. Basically you can select the option to not count prior course work taken over six years or more. I didn't do this option mostly b/c my past is my past good or bad and I think it makes me stronger having gone through all of that insanity... maybe that was a bad way to approach that option but that was what I did.

Thanks again!

Hi cloeny, welcome! All I know is I found this site and it has been wonderful! Huge thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement. This process is so much more complex than I expected and as a nontraditional student I find it hard to get sound advice from my advisory who I would also like to mention attended the advisor meeting held by K-State. good times... Anyway, I am so sorry to hear your news but do keep your chin up and keep trying. If it was worth it enough to you to can your business and shift careers you are indeed dedicated enough to see this through until the day you are called DVM.

It may help to find another clinic to shadow at. I swear my two biggest fans are a Vet tech and a Vet assistant at the clinic I work at. This is tough and support is important and those techs/assistants have a lot to teach a newbie like us. Since those two have worked with the vet for so long they push letting me try things which is great. There just more comfortable with asking or pushing me to do things. Or pointing out that I need to learn something.

As for you questions about where to take classes here is my advice. Take it wherever you can get an A. That said keep in mind these science classes build and follow you all the way to vet school. How they build is unknown to me exactly but think about it some. I debated this a lot and still do. When I went off to my first college out of high school I assumed I was a good student and would be fine. Well, my KS cow town high school did not prepare me for the pace of a service academy. So although I had the grades to get in I had a poor foundation which made things horrible hard.

This time around I am trying to make sure that my foundation is strong so Vet school (god willing) will not be as huge a struggle. I also took Chem 1 & 2 again b/c it had been so long (had to for most schools pre-requ requirements). I wanted those fresh before I took on Organic. Still not sure I would take organic at a 4 year school again. It is hard and I would say it depends on the teacher and how the grades are figured. Some (my current professor included) see it as a weed out class for those hopeful pre-med/pre-vet types. My prof tells us that day one and the science department keeps lab separate so you can't survive off of your lab grade to pull you through. If there is the slightest chance of failure save yourself the heartache and take it some place else. If you go to a community college for Organic still approach it as a hard subject and although it appears easy it can be awful if you don't stay on top of it. Also, find a study partner. That has been a huge help for me.
Good luck!

Happy early birthday Banditalfi!

researchvet-

my letter came via mail. it was sad because my boyfriend knew I was waiting for something from UPenn and he hid the letter behind his back and tried to surprise me... but when I saw it, I knew there was something wrong because it wasn't a postcard..!! haha.. it's kind of funny when I think about it, but sad at the same time! oh well... that's okay! I still have hopes with my other schools I applied to. 🙂

Does anyone know when/how Tufts/Davis starts sending notifications out?

I recall getting an interview invitation letter via regular mail -- thin, business-sized envelope, so don't freak out🙂 -- from Tufts last year in early Jan. Same timing and format for Minnesota's interview invite, also, if anyone is wondering about them. I was out-of-state for both; don't know if that makes a difference as to when they invite/interview.

Sorry to hear that adOggy, better luck with your other schools though!

Uh-Oh, should I be worried? I have scores identical to yours, but I am in-state! Filled out the postcard, but does this mean I will be rejected later without an interview? I will have to keep my fingers crossed and I wish I would hear from some of my schools soon, the waiting is killing me!

It's funny, think I've reached kind of a laid back place with the waiting for now. I think it's partially because I'm waiting on some work stuff right now which is taking more of my day to day focus. Also, with holidays coming up, I have something else to look forward to (yay family🙂). And finally, I think it's because I've realized that hearing positive things means interviews (hearing negative things is just 🙁), interviews mean lots of prep work, and right now I just want to relax. I don't want to start thinking about interviews too much, because if I do, I'll just be stressing all through the last stretch of my favorite time of year.

 (Who can be stressed when the banana man is dancing? Not me!)

hanakanapuna

I wouldn't be too worried yet! since you are in-state your chances are definitely better! i was reading up on the Q & A on UPenn's website and they say that you definitely have an advantage if you are an in-state applicant since a little more than half their seats are offered to in-state students. GOOD LUCK! 😀

Received an email today regarding fall transcripts. It is the first correspondence I have received from them. I admit my heart leaped up into my throat when I first saw it in my inbox!

I just got the same email, and my reaction was the same.🙄

Yeah, pretty much the same here--at first I thought they were like, "We haven't recieved them. Please send them ASAP." And then I totally chilled when I saw that they didn't require them.

Yep, I got the same email, luckily I saw that you guys had posted about it before I checked my email, or else I would have freaked out as well. They're supposed to be mailing out letters the first to second week of January, so we shall know soon.

For anyone interested in Iowa State University, they've added an extra interview date in January. So the remaining interview dates are:

Jan 4/5
Jan 11/12
Jan 25/26

Also, the majority of the remaining interview invites will go out next week. Gentlemen, start your nail-biting...

Got an e-mail from WSU, my application is complete to date and is currently undergoing review........currently undergoing review!!! Please help me send my application some good vibes :luck:

Best of luck on finals everyone! I personally feel like I'm half dead, twice over, but it'll all be done with soon enough..

Yikes, our finals start tomorrow and I'm def not in final mode... all I can think about is vet school! Luckily, I don't have a big final until Monday... Metabolic Pathways... it's a cross listed grad/undergrad course with only about 4 undergrads enrolled including me... and the toughest prof at my school. Yikes! 😱 I better get back to studying!

Also, the majority of the remaining interview invites will go out next week. Gentlemen, start your nail-biting...

oh goodness...i'm trying to quit biting my nails. Guess this isn't the best time! 😛

So I got this email from Mississippi State today. Yay, looks like we'll hear one way or another about interviews a few days after Christmas! Texas A&M's website says we should hear by Dec 21/22, so I guess I'll be biting my nails over Christmas break. Good thing I have lots of deb parties to distract me...

Mississippi's email:
"We wanted to touch base just to let you all know that we've not forgotten you. Our admissions committee is feverishly working to complete review of applicant files before the holidays. In the days immediately following Christmas, we will email status updates letting you all know if you have been invited for an interview for the class of 2012. Keep an eye on your email and certainly if your address has changed, we need to know that. Also, if you have not heard from us by January 1, let us know. (This communication should be with Barbara. Missy will be away from her computer for the holidays.) "
