So, should I be fortunate enough to be accepted into a Clinical PhD program this year, I will almost certainly be moving from a Mac-centric lab to a PC-centric one. (PCs, Dells especially, were almost uniformly present at my interviews.)

I don't have any problem switching Hardware/OS, but I'm completed addicted to the Mac-only program "Papers" for cataloging PDFs for my current lit reviews and manuscript-in-preparation. (It's basically an iTunes for journal articles, in terms of simple, GUI-based searching/labeling/sorting.)

Does anyone know of a similar program that runs on PCs? I would stay in Mac/Unix land if I could, but PCs seemed to dominate every lab I visited. Thanks for your input!

There is a program called Endnote for MAC and PC that interfaces with word and pubmed really well and you can have it format references by journal preferences when you submit papers so it's been a lifesaver for me. One word of advice is to not format all the references until the end if you are going to send it around to many people many times b/c it does get a bit buggy esp if epople are using different versions.

Yeah endnote is the ****, if you or the department can afford it, me being all about free, there ARE free alternatives that are compatible with EndNote (i.e., an EndNote 13 library can be imported and exported from these programs)... and I tend to use those... I also use Linux though, so yeah... either way endnote is a necessity or an endnote equivalent.

Edit: Also these alternatives can do everything EndNote does, people just reverse engineered endnote then made it free

The department where I work has it, but I will be leaving for grad school soon 🙂 what are the free alternatives you like?

Can someone please explain what this program is and what its called on LINUX? I love my Open Office....(linux alternate to microsoft word)!!
I am always looking for new programs (especially if free) to make my work a little easier...

endnote is a great program that can link to things like pubmed and create libraries of your references. you can link those libraries to your papers and it automatically formats your references and bibliography. it's life changing.

any different that microsoft word 2007 references tool? you add in titles and other info and it formats it for APA or MLA ect...
Whats pubmed? I feel so dumb here...
thanks.

Hey all-
4th year clinical psych phd student.
I'm also a nerd (suprise!) that uses every platform (linux primarily, but mac and windows too).

Mendeley is the route to go here, by far.
Goto Mendeley.com; get the desktop application (works on EVERY OS; and has plugins for firefox/word/openoffice)

I am able share both citations and articles with people anywhere (but also in our department) who "subscribe" to my crap. Its also super easy when I'm on pubmed to pull down a citation.

By far the best program I've ever used in this regard. IMO, puts end note to shame.

Oh yeah, and its FREE. But you rich grad students dont care about cost 😉

it looks like your version of pubmed may just be a government version. do you log in? I log in through the institution I work with and it gives me access to the full text articles.

yeah I forget I work for the government lol my fault, regardless though NCBI is free access to all, therefore pubmed is too

Definitely agree Mendeley is the way forward. I wrote a short review of it with some users tips on using it and the pros and cons of what it has to offer.
