A friend matched at Keesler and didn't want to. Anyone have any ideas/advice? There are concerns that the program isn't accredited. How will this impact his future? Is there anyway to get out of a military match spot? Is there any bright side to Keesler we're not thinking of? Sorry so ignorant- I am not military.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

They are re-opening (is that a word?) the residencies at Keesler, starting initially with FP and gen surg. They have created a relationship with the U. of Mississippi for the residencies.

As far as I can tell the AF is hell bent on reopening Keesler as a hospital/med center regardless of the fact that living conditions in the area are still abysmal. Good luck finding a nice house down there, and I have no idea what there will be to do off base. They were forcing multiple people from my last hospital to move to Keesler, and using temp military help to try to get the hospital up and running. The people PCS'ing to the area couldn't take their families until they had housing secured, which wasn't easy last time I heard.

There is no way I know of to get out of the match totally, but it may be possible to drop out of the program after the intern year and become a general medical officer or flight surgeon.

I find it hard to believe that the hospital will be busy enough to sustain residents (at least for a while) but hopefully I'm wrong.

There is still a large retiree population in the area. And the programs are acreditted. Internship is only 12 months. Make some lemonade.

Disclaimer: I cannot speak to the status of GME at Keesler.

However, my Navy reserve unit drills at the CB base right down the road. The entire Mississippi Gulf Coast is still quite devastated by Katrina. The first 6 blocks inland from Beach Boulevard (for miles) are barren, formerly occupied by apartments, businesses, motels, etc. About the only thing functioning are the megacasinos. Amazing how rapidly they were repaired.

The two main bridges to/from the Mississippi gulf coast on US Hwy 90 are still in shambles. The only route is I-110, a spur off of I-10.

I usually drive to Keesler on Saturday afternoon of drill weekend, for a run around the flight line and golf course on the gorgeous back bay. The base looks relatively well-repaired, although still lacks some needed work.

Hmmm...does this mean the Keesler AF Peds residents currently in my hospital in Virginia will be going back?

all peds should stay where they are... As of right now, the Keesler program is starting from scratch, and trying to find a way to entice staff to go down there. the statement of "you'll get to act like a senior resident with in-house call" isn't exactly enticing though.

Ha, we wish!

The area, while devastated (I was one of the residents who was in the hospital at the time) is apparently slowly improving, and actually 3 of the 8 interns' houses ranged from relatively undamaged (lost a garage door) to totally undamaged. I know since there were three or four of us living in every intact house since they were nice enough to offer, afterwards. So if you buy houses in the more protected (and hence more expensive) areas you'll be fine. Oh and make sure you ask about flood and hurricane insurance because one of those is not included in the basic package (I had renter's insurance, but my homeowning fellow residents were talking about this). We really do miss the area, though, and there was more of a family feel to the program; when I first got there I was hurting since I was a Northener dropped into the south, but we really started missing it after we left. Good luck!

P.S. Oh and air conditioning, definitely THE best investment ever!

I used to live in the Grande View apartments, right on Highway 90 a few blocks past the Coliseum going away from base. Needless to say since I could see the beach from the driveway, it was hit pretty hard. Of course not as hard as the apartment complex in FRONT of it - that one got reduced to matchsticks and rubble, while my apartment just had the siding torn off it and flooding a couple feet up the walls.... ah good times, can't believe it was only a year ago

Hi,

Thanks for your responses. My friend hasn't really been given any indication as to whether he'll be at Keesler immediately, or if he'll be shipped to one of the other sites currently taking its residents. Do any of you who were residents there have any sense of what the plan is for the '07 folks?

I am an M1, and I have a house on the MS gulf coast. I am very familiar with Keesler AFB. I lived there growing up. If your friend needs any help finding a place to stay or having someone show them around, you can put us in touch. I would be happy to help.
