Yes, in basic solutions they can interconvert. This is why when you do a tollens test you get a positive for fructose, it converts from a ketone into an aldehyde.
 
Do we need to know this for the MCAT? i can't find the topic on the topic list, but am wondering if it's hidden under another name. Thanks in advance!
 
On the topic list, it says monosaccharide reactions, of which I'm guessing this is one, although it's not listed specifically...though I'm not totally sure. Could someone clarify? thanks!
