Anyone have any idea how you are supposed to know it is C as opposed to B? I would never guess its curved. How would you know that?

Bs side view shows that the hole extends across the whole top part of the figure, which is not right.

From a top and side view, a semicirce has the same profile. From the top, there is no sharp angle at any point along the curve, so no lines from one side to the other. From the side view, there will only be a line at its deepest depression. IF the top line on option B extended all the way across, it would also be right and there would be no way to definitively say whether the shape was a curve or flat depression. However that's not what is given and B is wrong as Suhshi explained.

shouldn't the semicircle be dotted?

nope, while it is true that the semicircle runs halfway along the top of the shape, it starts from the right end (front and top views). Therefore, it would be fully visible from the end view

If you're looking at the answer choices, no, because from the end view you'll be looking directly at the semicircular divot. From the front view, it should be and IS dotted, and from the top view, you're looking at it directly again.
