Blue-green algae are bacteria, and some algae are classified as protists, but schuams also says algae such as spirogyra (green algae) have alternating gametophyte sporophyte generations.

byrophytes are non vascular, tracheophytes are vascular, where would algae fit if it IS a plant?

it is a huge Qs. that has elude taxonomist for years. many of these specie's taxa were turn over due to discoveries of new characters. big ongoing classification problem
in regared to the DAT, i dont think u need to know all this details, but wil not go wrong by knowing it.

in short. no they are not. most ppl think they are but they are not. is blue green algae a plant? i think not. it would be a bryophyte IF it was a plant b/c it is not complex. but it isnt a plant so you dont need to worry about it.

no questions are stupid here. We all learn something from them, or at least clear out some confusion that we might not know.

Thanks

I never noticed books saying what algae were clearly. I feel like we were just supposed to know. I think wiki helped.

Ironic...as wiki places Green Algae under Kindom Plantae just to add to the confusion.
OP is talking about blue-green algea in which wiki places them under bacteria -- of course green algea are placed under plants so there is not much confusion on these parts

Of course blue-green algae are bacteria, there is no confusion there. Cyanobacteria... self explanatory. The confusion comes with green algae. Green algae are protists. Wikipedia lists them as plants, which is incorrect.

Looks like someone needs to go edit Wiki on this topic. They arent always right you know. This topic hasnt been settled by the Nature yet....and no I am not referring to Mother Nature. 😀
