Sorry missed one. One guy wants to live on his boat and "do urgent care" rather than finish residency.
 
At least one intern will be coming to Orlando to start in January; possibly another, but I don't know details yet.
 
So these guys are going to be doing outside rotations until July to meet residency requirements?

I think the problem would be that no programs want to put their name on their diplomas when they have essentially no input into their educations and little to no effect on the quality of the graduates. Big risk, no reward for the programs.

I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to take that risk if I was a PD either. Fortunately most of our graduates have not had difficulties finding jobs in CA in the past.

This is the real heart of the matter. I hope that whole hospital is shut down. I feel bad for you residents, but it has to be done. MLK/Drew is a disaster, because of this whole mentality of entitlement.

Anybody tries to speak up about it, and they are immediately labeled a racist by the punk "community activists" and hospital leaders. They have zero accountability to anyone and have misbehaved for decades now. They have no shame and should all be fired.
 
Eugene Hardin is the old PD, right?

Not surprising that he sucks ass as a PD, since he was given the job due to affiirmiative action just like most of hte people in charge at MLK/Drew.

That whole place is infested with the affirmative action "entitlement" mentality which is why MLK/Drew has been in a downward spiral for at least 20 years now. No accountability whatsoever, people given cush jobs they didnt not earn or deserve. Anybody who questions them is immediately labeled as racist and dismissed. No other hospital in the country would have gotten away with htis bad behavior for so long.

**** MLK/Drew. That med school needs to be shut down too.

So did you reach that conclusion based on his photo or do you actually have access to his CV and you were there when the decision was made to hire him?🙄

Actually he's right (even if his logic is irrational), Hardin was terrible and deserved to be fired.

The fact that he was IM trained and not EM board certified was one. The fact that he was both chairman and PD was another. The fact that he was full time at Torrance Memorial hospital was another.

I just KNOW that on the (rare) occasions I make mistake with consults, etc, some think "must be an AA hire".

Just remember that white people can be stupid and unqualified, too. 🙄

Sure they can and I know plenty of them.

But MLK/Drew is different. They are the most rabid affirmative action healthcare institution in the world. Being minority doesnt just get you a little boost in the applications process, it comprises the bulk of it.

The administrators at MLK/Drew pride themselves on it. They are so rabid about it that it has clouded their vision and they put a bunch of chumps (like Hardin) in charge of everything. Thats exaclty why the place has gone to **** year by year for the past 20 years or so.

And of course you cant fire anybody, regardless of how badly they do their jobs, because to do so would be "racist."
 
Whatever the reasons, it's water under the bridge now.

Were you a resident or attending there? I'm not sure why you're still complaining about past wrongs. Hardin hasn't been chief for over a year. The hospital is done, and the residents who trained there have been screwed over. We're just trying to make sure everyone gets a spot at this point.

As an outsider, it seems like MacGyver is very bitter. Maybe he was passed over for a job at MLK because of what he perceived to be from AA? 😀

For those who haven't read his posts, MacGyver is being himself. He rants and raves about a few issues. So it's doubtful he has any involvement with MLK, but I could be wrong.

The vast majority of our attendings were not AA. At the time I started in 2005, we had only 4 AA attendings. At that time ALL of them were universally terrible regardless of race.

I thought the article in the new issue of EM Resident was an interesting read. Again, I'm glad that everyone found a spot, and props to Corpus Christi.

I know an attending in the area. word has it that the local cali residencies played dumb and as the king-drew ship sank, they fled fast, and strong witout offering any lifeguards. apparently, there was a half-ass, fake attempt by Dr. Swardon at USC, but even then, it was half-assed. no one was placed in california. it was texas and new york programs that offered help. new york programs get my props. california programs👎 surprisingly, harbor-ucla and ucla-olive view were the most vocally resistant to offering help. this is straight from dr. dang, the interim chair at king drew. they didn't want to 'water-down' their resident pool. funny thing is, I hear the king-drew residents were pretty good.

Swadron's attempt wasn't half-assed. He spent a good 2-3 months trying to get 4 of our residents to transfer over to USC. USC is opening up a brand-new 100 bed ED this year, so will probably need the extra residents. Swadron was planning on expanding the residency to 22 per year anyway, so this would have worked out well. It was LA County which blocked any transfers. Essentially the county wanted us all gone, and would work against any plans to facilitate a transfer. While unhelpful, Harbor-UCLA barely has enough patient volume (about 45,000) to support their 15 residents/year.

The New York programs have been very helpful, and took ~ 6 residents. 12 ended up in Corpus Christi, 1 in New Jersey, 1 in Florida, 1 in Illinois, 1 in Virginia, and 1 in Michigan.

Stop giving USC so much credit. If swardon would've applied for emergency expansion the county would've been forced to pay the new residents.

I just read the article in EM Resident. I don't know if Jon McGarry (the author) is on this board, but if you are, sir, you have my utmost respect and admiration for the tone that you managed to maintain while writing the article. Even with the ability to type, edit, and edit again before sending in the final draft, it must have been no small task to maintain such a high degree of professionalism.

I was OUTRAGED reading this article. I was OUTRAGED for YOU and your classmates who were abandoned by a hospital, a city, a training system, and a culture of servitude.

To every residency program and director who helped place the displaced from Drew, congratulations. I would work for any of you any day.

Jon, I agree the article was excellent --well done. Now, can you PLEASE post the first draft here with all the nasty language; I am sure you had to vent on paper a couple times before you were able to actually get to wrtitting the real article! I could only imagine how that first draft read!

Did anyone see Thursday's episode? When Ray made reference to the "MLK residents in Los Angeles who were screwed"

*AND* they took a big swipe at Joint commissions (with their abritrary rules, making things more difficult for doctors, and less safe for patients). We should, as a group, reconsider the amount of power we allow JC to have. As a private entity, who is regulating *them?*

I love ER...still.

I caught it, too. I was thinking, "that sounds really familiar." LOL. But I thought he didn't really say "MLK." Did he???

I'll admit that I'm a fan of ER, too. Still the best medical drama out there in my opinion.

Im pretty sure they said "those residents in LA" I got it on tivo and will try and check it later.
 
All this speculation made me download the episode via bit torrent. I've started watching a few episodes of ER recently after not watching for 3 years. The more realistic cases are so refreshing compared to Grey's, but there is still way too much sex between everyone on both shows. Maybe everyone does sleep with everyone during residency?? 🙂
