Do you know of any poor dentists? A dentist always has overhead, so if all his patients think he's a jackass, he won't gain any profit. I've seen many businesses like this. Jewelers for example. They have to buy expensive equipment, but if his business isn't going well, he gains no profit.

My uncle was a poor dentist for awhile. His wife stole a bunch of money from his practice and he ended up going bankrupt and borrowing a lot of money from his mother. He drove a beat-up white, rusted, piece of s*it for awhile. He is now back on his feet after getting rid of the crazy wife. He is the nicest guy in the world...probably why this happened to him. Watch out who you marry.

This reminds me of the time my mother took me to some asian astrologist dude who believed he could estimate my future "luck." He basically said I'll become filthy rich but at the same time poor b/c my hot wife will spend most of it....

I worked for a dentist for a while who was sleeping with his secretary, got caught with his pants down and then went through a divorce to his second wife. He had three kids by two different women and then married the secretary who had two kids. (She was definitely a gold digger.) Before his divorce he was already on the verge of financial disaster due to his second wife. She took him to the cleaners in court and the secretary wife was living the high life on his credit. . . so a word of advice, don't just watch out who you marry, watch out who you sleep with!!! He was a stellar dentist who did amazing work, but his private life was a disaster. All the ex-wives and children and new toy wife cost him a lot of money and a lot of patients left his practice too.

I don't have a nasty spouse story, but I do know a dentist whom I wouldn't call poor, but definitely not as well off as most other dentists. Basically, he made poor business decisions (such as location) and he's not a great businessman. He and his family are by no means starving, but it goes to show how much of a difference business training and a good business personality can make. But then again, not everyone wants the headaches of big(ger) business and are happy managing small offices.

Why do you think I choose to go through so much trouble applying and wanting to be stuck in school for the next four years! I like the lifestyle! ---ugh that and I like to help ppl. I have graduated and for some reason came over here to see what everyone is saying/feeling as a predent. No, not all dentists make money. I have a friend that was absolutely set on living in a certain city and moved there after dental school without a job. He eventually found one with a chain and makes just a bit of money. Minus the outrageous amount of taxes and the loan repayments he doesn't make much more than he did at his job prior to going to dental school.
I laugh when I read people saying how much money they will make- good luck. My undergrad advisor told me once that more and more students are going into dentistry that would otherwise be in business. If money is the driving force, please go toward business!

There are a higher percentage of sucessful dentists than sucessful businessmen. So, I'll stick with the percentages.

i've spoken to a couple dentists who told me in their first few years or so their hygienists were making more money than they were.

as for jackass dentists, i've also met a few of them. real loud and obnoxious!
