Nikki, what is your schedule like for the Post Bac program? Is it all day M-F? Also, how many classes do you have each semester? Thanks.

I just learned that I have been accepted at KU through a snail letter. Does anyone know when I should expect to receive the matriculation and financial aid package?

I commute from Kansas City, MO. Parking isn't much of a problem. I've never parked out of the parking lots though. Basically you can pay for a parking pass annually and you get to park in any of the "yellow" lots. None of them are super close to the school, but since most of the class has to park in the lots, you always have people to walk with. They also have a transit system to get you to the parking lots if you don't want to walk.
I know some people don't buy the parking pass and find parking elsewhere, but I wouldn't know how available those spots are because I've never used them. I think most people just buy the pass. I think its around $60 per year.

Occasionally I've had trouble getting a spot in the yellow lots - but that is generally at the very beginning of the year when all of you over achievers are attending every class. :) As the year goes on and attendance is reduced, there are usually ample spots to park. If your worried about getting a parking spot, just show up at 8:30 instead of 9:00 and you shouldn't have a problem. Most likely a good part of your class will be in class that early anyway. There are still some second year students that come to class that early.

Thank you for the valuable insight! I was told to keep instate tuition, I have to look on the KS side of Stateline road (which sucks because all the best options are in MO). Has anyone considered buying rather than renting? So many big decisions in the next month or two!

You definitely need to stay in Kansas. I was a Missouri resident before school started so I'm just out of luck. I own, but I owned before I started school as well. I'd probably advise renting... after all, you may decide to go to Wichita during third and fourth year....

I will be OOS at KU for 2008-2009. Does anyone know what it takes to become Kansas resident? Is that buying the house make someone resident after one year of owning the house?

Possible, but not guaranteed. After you lived in Kansas for a year you would ask them to review your residency status. They would look at a variety of factors and then decide. They won't tell you in advance if your status is likely to be changed, nor do I know how likely it is for them to change their minds. They told me that they are trying to decide if your likely to stay in Kansas or not after you like school. Factors such as paying Kansas state taxes, family ties to Kansas and other things are considered.
I'm guessing that had I known this info in advance and decided to move to Kansas instead of buying in Missouri a few months prior to med school there is a good chance I would be considered a Kansas resident right now.... basically because I've lived in Kansas City for 6 years now, went to undergrad in Olathe Kansas, my husband works in Kansas and thus we've paid Kansas taxes for 6 years and I paid Kansas taxes for 4 years prior to that (during undergrad).
I decided not to try because I've owned my current house for a short period of time and by the time I had lived in Kansas for a year, the hassle and cost of buying wouldn't make it worth the change in tuition. Besides.... I wouldn't even be guaranteed that they would change my residency status.

If your planning on buying anyway, then it would be worth buying in Kansas and trying to get your residency status changed. If your not sure whether you want to buy or not, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so just because you think your going to be able to change your residency status - theres no guarantees, and in order to have a good chance, you had better have some convincing ties to Kansas. I don't have any hard evidence but I have heard that it is very difficult to get your status changed.

When i was in the interview they said that once you get into KU as an out of state changing status is very difficult. On the aspect of buying a house would place you in a bind if you end up being assigned to go to Wichita for your rotations during 3rd and 4th years. Mind you they indicated that they dont take in consideration that you own a house in the Kansas City area or in Wichita to get preference of your placement. So keep that in mind as you explore your options.

Don't we have to choose between Kansas city and Wichita? do they assign randomly the rotation location? please help.

From what i have heard we get to choose whether we want to stay in KC or go to Wichita for clinical rotations. But if the numbers are not balanced where by i think 1/3 of the students are willing to go to Wichita and the rest stay KC then they have to make the decision of which students will fill the void. So hopefully our class will balance out well and everyone gets their choices..

You have to take 12 hours per semester. 9 hrs science and 3 hrs elective. Your weekly schedule depends on what classes you choose.

Hey all, I was curious if I could get some info on the Pre-Matriculation program that starts early this summer. What is expected of the students that enter that program? Due to a bunch of weddings and a possible trip this summer I was wondering if I would have the flexibility to do both the pre-matric. and the weddings (not optional b/c I'm in some of them). What does it cost do do it? I'm also curious about the stipend request. What would be a good amount to request, I wouldn't want to seem too needy, but would like to be comfortable. Is it like a refresher course over undergrad with exams over the material? Any information I can get about this thing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Congrats everyone! I am currently a student at KCUMB and will be leaving for the summer. I'm looking to have a med student sublet my house for the summer. Its a 2 bedroom and about 3 blocks from KU Med center. This would be great for someone searching for a place of there own or doing a summer practicum. It will we available June and July, but if you are only interested in it for one month, Ill take that too. We'll continue to pay the utilities, you'll just be responsible for the rent. Let me know if you're interested!

[email protected]

Look forward to hearing from you!

Hey guys! I haven't looked at this site for a while, so congrats to all who made it in! I was wondering if we had a final verdict on the tablet for next year. I'm really excited/curious to see what we'll be getting.

Also, who is going to the spring visit day this upcoming Friday? I'll be there, and I'm excited to meet all of those who attend. I saw on the schedule that they would have a tablet demonstration that day, so if no one has heard for sure what our computers will be like, I'm guessing we'll find out on Friday.

Rock Chalk.:D

Aww!! You guys get a mouse with your computers??? So not fair!!! LOL. I guess I should introduce myself. I'm a current M1 at, what I believe, the best school ever. Anyone have any questions just shoot me a holler and I'll try and answer them as best as possible. This forum last year helped me decide to attend school here and I want to persuade all those accepted to do the same.

How's the class of 2011 doing?
We're finishing up our last week of lecture next week, have exams (including a pharm shelf:scared:) next week and then its Step I prep time:scared::scared::scared:.
You guys will be where I am before you know it.
I am pretty excited to start clinical rotations in June though - although I'd prefer to avoid Step I.

Anyone have undergrad experience with Microsoft OneNote? Apparently, this is the note-taking program used by a majority of the current med students. I'm curious how easy it is to navigate/pick-up.

One Note is very easy to use/pickup. How you decide to use it is up to you though. There are a lot of options to organize notes so you can optimize your studying.

So I found a pretty good resource for this:

your basic size S M L, will roughly fit with these sizes

Women,
Look on the first line and find your size, then correlate it to
the white coat size on line two.For example, if you wear a size 6, then you would order a size 34 white coat.

Women’s Sizing:
Size 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22
Coat Size 32 34 36 38 40 42 44 46 48 50

Men’s Sizing:
Instructions for use:
Look on the first line and find your shirt size, then correlate
it to the white coat size on line two.For example, if you wear a large shirt, then you would order a size 44 or 46 white coat. If you are between sizes,
go with the bigger of the two sizes.

XS S M L XL XXL XXXL
32-34 36-38 40-42 44-46 48-50 52-54 56-58

for some reason I couldnt line up the text correctly

Hey all, Just thought you should know that we can get a summer membership at the rec. center for around $23 as a non-assessed student. I figure now is the time to take advantage of it.

You have a test on Friday of the first week? Thats odd. We didn't. I don't know about the class of 2011 though. They probably changed a bunch of stuff around after we (the guinea pigs of the new curriculum) got through.

Do you have any info about the test at all? I might be able to clue you in better if I knew more info....

I'm sure they'll tell you about it at orientation anyway. I'm guessing that starts Monday? We had our orientation (third year) last week and start clinicals on Monday. I feel like a newbie all over again.

OK - someone posted a question about a test we have at the end of the first week and more importantly about the schedule -- is that accessible through "Angel," or did I accidentally perhaps DELETE an email about the calendar attached or what? Because I saw an email referring an older email with a calendar, but I don't seem to have that! Should I panic?!

See you all on the 24th!

Yup the schedule is accessible through Angel, just go to the SOM2012 tab link, then hit content, under the content category their is a document for Registration and Orientation events.

I wouldn't worry about it too much! If it is correct, I doubt it's worth anything that will affect your grade... maybe just a "practice" exam to kind of familiarize you with the testing center and system and stuff. We had a mock lecture during orientation last year, but I don't think there was a test or anything. There's also a good chance it's a mistake on Angel... there tend to be a lot of errors on the scheduling there (or at least there were last year!), so it might be that they put it down for the wrong month or something :)

Anyway, good luck to everyone starting this week! I say relax, have fun, enjoy meeting people and getting a taste of the campus and area... and, of course, go out and have some fun at night ;)

I think it was for the online test of some sort...and it seems like we have those every week.
