Happy New Year to All! Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to have a lab at home? Do most students do their waxing, casting, polishing, finishing etc. at the dental school labs or do their set up labs at home. If so what do you need? What are the costs?

Whoa, hogan!! Having a dental lab at home has never crossed my mind. Since I am paying tuition I'm gonna use the facilities that the school possesses to the maximum. At my home, I am not gonna have nothing except my books that deals with dentistry. You would go crazy, and fall in love with the manakin.

But it is a good idea for those who want to think dentistry 24 hours a day.

PS: Try PENN, they have a Dental House that is catered to dental students like you. They have a Dental Fellow who lives there and a lab available 24 hours a day.

interesting point, hogan. i've spoken with several students that talk about practicing waxups, etc, at home. a dentist that i work for gave me some 50 year old handpiece that you can plug into a wall outlet. a bit large, but he recommended it for practicing at home.

while i'll certainly take advantage of the school facilities, my wife will appreciate me spending as much time as possible at home. does anyone have anymore info on lab work at home?

I do wax-ups at home. I just bring home my Hanau torch, my articulator with the mounted wax project, and all my waxing instruments. I set up some newspaper on a table in front of the TV, light up the torch, and do my waxups. I like to do wax stuff at home because it requires little brain input so I can catch up on all my TV while being productive.

The only other labwork I can do at home is surveying and drawing on casts to make removable partial dentures. Everything else I have to do at school. This includes mostly pouring up and mounting impressions. We have 24 hour access and a parking lot right next to the door, so its not that bad. And labwork is much less for us as third years than it was as second years, so I am at school way less. We don't cast anything as third and fourth years, so it would be a waste of money to set it up in your house.

i am a 1st year, and trust me, you wont WANT to take ANYTHING home with you! For us, we technically have time during the week to practice waxups etc...but its up to you to use that time wisely. I practice wax ups before a practical or for an assignment, but otherwise i spend most of my time studying those "easy" classes like gross, phys, histo, etc....
Its hard enough to balance time at home between studying, eating, and your signigicant other!
Your school should give you the portable alcohol torches that you could use at home
