I've got a dilemma...I have these AMAZING really dark navy (almost black) pants. I just went to the store where I got them almost a year ago and we couldn't find an exact match in a blazer. I tried on a bunch of suits, but they were all kind of "meh." But then I stumbled upon this really nice knee-length black wool coat, and coincidentally, my current winter coat is in dire need of replacement. So, my question is - would a wool coat + nice turtleneck + slacks would be ok? I could also do a shirt+vest instead of the turtleneck, I think it'd look more "official." It'd definitely save me $ in the long run if the coat is a good replacement for a blazer.

LOL, I'm not gonna buy it so I can post pictures of it on SDN, lol.🙄

Just smth very basic, like this:

honestly if u like the coat so much, just buy it. you are in canada afterall😀 and you might be interviewing when/where it is cold...

but when it comes to interviews, i would stay on the safe side, and stick to classics/basics.
I can't get both, I don't $#&% money.

I think it's kind of long to replace a suit jacket...a little "Zorro does med school interviews," maybe?

It's darling, though.

A coat is outerwear. You can't wear outerwear indoors. You will be invited to hang up your coat and there you'll be in a turtleneck and slacks. That's too casual. It wouldn't kill your chances (if I were your interviewer) but it might make you uncomfortable, particularly in places where you are sitting among a dozen or four dozen other applicants.

I know the boyz do it, so I'm thinking maybe we can do it, too.
I dunno why a woman can't just go to a store and buy a freaking conservative-looking suit. Everything has to have some idiotic ruffles, decorative buttons, freaking puffed sleeves....URGH.

What do you think of a vest + shirt pairing instead of the turtleneck?

check department store clearances. i got a calvin klein suit. very simple, pinstripe, conservative for $120. didn't have to alter.

there were a lot more suits of this nature at macy's when i was looking.

the more high fashion (i.e. express, limited), the more ridiculous fluorishes you'll find.

You just reminded me that I should go over to my parents' house and dig up my wool peacoat. Ugh...I hate having to lug layers around.

I think there are a lot of conservative-looking ladies' suits out there if you avoid, say, Bebe... They just may cost more than you would like to spend 🙁. Best of luck.

(And because I find Bebe's idea of "suiting" to be hilarious🙂)

The only department store we have in our town is Sears. :barf:

I do have a trip up to Calgary lined up for the end of October and thought about shopping there, but I've never done clothes shopping there before, so I don't know if I can find anything nice at the big mall there.

The other option is drive 3 hours South to Montana, they have a mall there with JCPenney's and some no-name stores, but then I have to deal with crossing the border, then paying duty, etc.

that is quite ridiculous, unless you maybe work in the fashion industry or something.

My prob is that EVERYBODY's putting lycra in their suits these days, which makes you look like crap because it highlights all the bulges. That's why I like those pants I have so much - they are made from traditional suiting fabric and they drape beautifully.😍 But everything I tried on today had stupid spandex in it!😡 LOL.

yea, sears not the best for clothing. heavy duty appliances, yes. business suit no.

I say go Calgary. Surely, if it's a big city they will have a nordstrom, dillard's, macy's or something of that sort.

I also looked at some sheaths today, but then they all seemed to be rather lowcut, and I'm a DD, so that wouldn't fly unless I wore something underneath, in which case I'd end up looking way too matronly.

Going to the US might not be a bad idea, considering the awesome state of our Canada dollar (Woo!). Also, clothes are generally priced lower in US currency, I heard.

mine's polyester, but looks great and it's not stretchy.

it's sorta like this.

well i don;t know about you guys, but i prefer to shop haute couture in Paris and Milan. each new interview i have, i just fly over to the old world, and get a new suit.
jolie, express or limited is NOT high fashion, darling😀

:meanie::meanie::meanie:
ha ha ha j/k
a friday night joke...

no, they're not, but they try to be too trendy. their clothes are definitely not what you would call "classic".

I WISH we had stores like Macy's, Dillard's, and Nordstrom here in Canada....instead we have The Bay. :barf: And unlike Ontarians or BC'ers, I don't live close to any well-populated US cities, so shopping options south of the border are also crap.

I just looked at the list of stores at their biggest mall and only Banana Republic and The Bay jumped out at me as stores that might have decent suits. Hmmmm. Last time I shopped at BR (6 months ago), I couldn't find a pants cut that worked for me.

Yeah, I scoffed when you said that you couldn't find anything at Sears...until http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_...othing&cName=Womens&sName=Suits+&+Collections and http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_...othing&cName=Womens&sName=Suits+&+Collections were the best I could do on their website. It doesn't seem like fabric quality is really...at a premium with them :d. I feel for you.
LOL, I worked in Sears administration for quite a while, so I didn't even need to go to the store to know I wouldn't find anything there.

It's a shame when you have the 15% employee discount and STILL can't find anything worth buying.🙁

ohhhh, the Bay, haha. I went their with my grandmother once when I was on vacation.

BR would probably be your best option and I think they do tailoring so even if you can't find something that's an exact fit you could alter it easily.

I do, actually, have some classic-looking suits I got at the Limited! Unfortunately, they are all ruined as the result of idiotic mishaps.🙄

Ummm... this was on the Bebe website in the suitage section. So, what interview would you wear this to, Hustler?
:wow:

WHY DID I MOVE TO THIS COUNTRY!?

Their is a Liz Claiborne shop at the Deerfoot Factory Outlet in Calgary.... I've always had good luck with that brand.
Hmmm, good idea! I don't know the shopping up in Calgary very well, I usually get all my clothes shopping done at the MOA in Minneapolis when I go there. :biglove:

I'll see where that Factory Outlet is...maybe there's something else nice at that place.:meanie:

I think it might look trampy because 1) the model is super-tall so the skirt looks shorter on her than it would on a regular woman 2) there is no hose 3) the heels are very high and not particularly conservative. I bet if you took a normal chick and added normal accessories, it would look fine. Maybe not med school interview/J.P. Morgan material, but it should fly at a regular office.

Have you considered a cape?

Come on, ladies, let's post-wh%#e..... We all know this is what all the clothing threads come down to. It's Friday night! I'm ignoring Orgo!

I thought one of the biggest malls in north america was in Alberta somewhere. Calgary? Edmonton? The one with the amusement park or something like that inside. Surely there is a suit to be found there.

Haha first I was going to go on a rampage and say "Don't you mean that Mall of America? In Minnesota?" But after a quick Google search I see that you mean the West Edmonton Mall...oh Google, how you save me from embarrassing moments!

Edmonton, but that's too far from me.

MOA in Minneapolis also has an amusement park inside and it's the second biggest mall in NA...but they are building it up now to try and outdo Edmonton.😱

Babydoll sweaters...taking ugly to a whole new level.😱

Im also ignoring orgo! Hopefully you can find something- I love MOA!!! When I was little my parents found a shop in there with all kinds of medical stuff. I got posters, models, and a stethoscope for xmas that year! I think I was 7 but all I did was watch medical shows and talk about being a doctor... life hasn't changed that much in the past 13 years... except now you can't just watch tv you gotta study orgo and physics 🙂

FYI, resolved the problem. First off, I caved in and bought that coat - so nice and soft! Pic below - I had to mess with a brightness a bit so that the details would be visible. The white spots are just smth from the lens. Also, while looking for the pants to wear with the coat, I stumbled upon this nice white blazer I've barely worn, so I'm wearing that, and I'm gonna have to figure out what color turtleneck I want. I have a white one, so I might just pick that. And yes, it's a LOLCAT in the corner. :meanie:

A blazer and navy pants would be considered "business casual" - not "business" attire. You want to have a professional appearance - err on the side of overdressing rather than dressing down. The turtleneck and blazer seems far too casual. Trust me, buy a suit!!! You can find one!

Nah, I ran it by a whole bunch of people (including a friend who had multiple interviews and got accepted after every single one of them) and they all approved it. So I'm definitely not buying a suit.
