So I'm thinking about getting a laptop for next year during my post-bacc, but I will also be applying to dental school again and don't want to buy another one for dental school.

So my question is....which schools require you buy their laptops? Obviously BU comes to mind....but are there any others? (i'm applying to BU, Tufts, Temple, UMaryland)

UNC requires you to buy their laptop!

CO and AZ both require one.

At CO, you have to buy theirs (Apple).

When I visited AZ, virtually everyone in the 1st year class had the same one that you could buy through the school. You weren't required to buy "their" Dell, but the cost was reashonable and the school's IT staff has certified Dell technicians, so it doesn't seem like it's worth it to find something else. I'm sure Gavin will square me away if I am incorrect.

Buffalo requires you to buy theirs, you can choose between a Dell or a Mac.

I recently bought a Gateway M210 lappy for my post-bac. If you really want or need a laptop, dont worry about schools wanting you to buy theirs. If you get in one of those schools, simply sell yours and buy theirs. Wouldnt worry too much about that. If you need one, get one. I did 👍

I don't like them either but I would not change my desire to apply somewhere just because of them.

Ouch, I'm using Mac right now , I hope this doesnt mean I cant get a woman to marry me , I love Macs, I'm trying to figure out if Temple has a preference, unfortunately, they probably want us to have Microsoft cpu's, oh well there's always LINUX

I happen to be a mac user as well, and love them, to each his own.... but it did take a lot of intense sweet talkin to get a girl to marry me, and my mac habbits were her biggest concern, so do becareful.

My laptop is a Mac. Luckily at CU they only care if your laptop has a power button because I don't want to switch back. Macs are the best!

iBook Here!! This is my first one and i have had it about 2-3 months and it hasn't given me one problem, error, virus, nothing. Just 1 maybe 2 pop ups. That's a breeze compared to the PC which was like playing a first person shooter closing all the pop ups.

I'm using my iBook now, and I love my cute little computer - one of the major bummers for me about UMDNJ, where I'm going, is that they require one to buy their Dell laptop 🙁 . I WISH they had a Mac option - I've become addicted, and once you've had it's very hard to switch back to the old crash-and-burn world of MS...

Its true. They are great computers. What is up with schools requiring the purchase of specific brands. Do they get a kickback like discounted support or something? I understand it makes it easier for the CIS dept to support students if all the computers are the same but there must be something in it for them.

Yeah, I've worked with Macs before- my ex-gf swore by them. Unless they've seriously improved in the past three years, I think I will deal with the occasional lock-up of my Windows based computer. 🙂

yeah macs are very pretty and cool until you try to do anything and discover that 1/2 of the internet isn't formatted for them and their browser isn't fully supported (wonder why they don't get popups?).

Not really. I don't have any formating errors with my browser. Think of all the web servers out there that are running unix. Mac is kind of like a mix of unix and linux i guess you could say. I think that years ago that macs got a bad rap and I personally didn;t like them bak then. But now I think its the best thing since sliced bread. i have not had a single problem with my laptop.

In response to browsing the internet, the reason why IE is so slow and has so many problems on a Mac is that IE is made by microsoft. The problem lies with their programming, not with the mac itself. If you use the Apple designed browser, Safari, you will have increased speed and reliability.

I too have noticed similar problems and have since just stopped trying to make IE work (i dont think microsoft spends any time updating their product, whereas Safari always works great!)

Using my mac has been wonderful in comparison with PC. It is very reliable and everything looks so much better (have you seen the new iMacs?). They definately have that industrial design edge over the PC world.

One issue that I hope that they will be able to overcome is that the IBM powerPC chips (G3, G4, G5) are not as cheap to produce as the Intel chips. So PC's have the advantage in the CPU.

First off. Its true. You can't compare IE on a mac to IE on a pc. IE on a mac is literally microsoft saying "ok, we will play fair here is a copy of IE for mac. It took us a whole day to reprogram it. Here you go." IE just isn't good on a mac. But using Camino, which is a faster version of Firefox, I have never had any formatting issues at all with webpages. Now, to comment on tablets. I had a portege 3500 which I sold to get my iBook. It was an interesting feature to be able to write on the screen and take notes. But honestly after a while I just couldn't take it anymore. The damn bettery lasted like 2.5 hours and unless you have a really good screen its hard to see it from an angle. also sometimes when I was taking notes it would actually take longer to erase and rewrite. I don't know, just seemed like it was fancy paper. I liked the feature that you could take notes and record a lecture at te same time. While replaying the lecture it would highlight what I wrote at the time which was ok. But iBook kind of has that too. Takes notes in MS Word and you can record lectures at the same time. Not trying to make this a one sided comparison and being subjective towards Apple. I hav been in the PC sector professionally for5 years and always thought macs weren't that great until i tried it. Like I said, best thing I ever used.

Yeah, I'm not sure I would've liked the portege 3500's from what I've read about them. Tablets have been improving quite a bit. The battery life in the M200 is 4hrs without really tweaking anything too much. Some have batteries that last around 8hrs. The viewing angles of the screens are much improved. Motion has a screen that you can use in direct sunlight. The M200 viewing angle sucks, but it doesn't bother me. I love being able to download lecture slides and mark them up and being able to type the lecture and then switch to pen to draw a rxn mechanism or whatever. You can have all your notes, tests, and everything in one place for several courses. Of course, you can also surf the web when you get bored...much better than doodling IMO. 🙂

Its not so much that there is a limit to software its just that apps work so you don't need like 20 versions of the same thing. There is lots of software look at versiontacker.com and macupdate.com

Yea Averatec makes them too. But its a budget tablet. Toshiba just came out with a new one with a good price point but been there done that.

Don't forget fujitsu. They have some of the best tablets around these days in convertable and slate form factors. I would love to pick up a 4010D for dental school next fall and bypass the stock dell issue. I have nothing against dell, I just want to try something new for a change.

It depends on the version and the OS but it is either (command+N) or (command+shift+N). As far as the right click, just click and hold the button down, or you can hold ctrl while clicking. Hope this helps.

Hey thanks. I've been learning the mac because everyone I know that knows a lot about computers use macs, so I get the impression it is better in some way that I'll probably never fully understand. Also, in the campus computer labs there's usually less of a wait to get on a mac then a pc.
