hello to all.
does anyone know of large animal opportunities in a big city, or even more specifically the boston area?
i have my other experiences in check -- private small animal practice, wildlife, zoo, shelter, lab/research.
all i need is large animal.
what's a big city girl to do?
any help/ suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm not sure what's available in the Boston area but as far as I know you don't have to get experience in every imaginable field. Yes, the committees will look at the breadth of experience of each applicant, but it looks like you've already achieved this. Unless you are interested in pursuing large animal medicine I don't think it's necessary to gain this experience on top of everything you've already done. From here on out it's going to be the quality of the experience. You've gained experience in various fields, but for how long? The committees will also look at this. You should think about which field you are interested in pursuing and work on gaining extensive experience in that field.

Though I'm not sure if they are accepting new volunteers at this time of the year, Tufts NICU out in grafton was where I got most of my large animal experience. I'm also living in the Boston area (and have no car to boot) and so I found very few opportunities in city. Tufts Grafton is accessible via the commuter rail but the schedule is spotty and was almost never in line with when my shifts were. I had to get there ridiculously early most of my shifts, and several times was stuck out there in the middle of the night with no way to get back home. Ended up sleeping on a couch in one of the student lounges.

I don't regret the time I got to spend out there. I wanted to keep doing it, but the insane amounts of travel time, coupled with the odd shifts (shift from 7PM to 1AM when the last train back to the city leaves at 11:45 PM etc) and having a full time job (as a vet tech in a shelter which I'm more interested in pursuing as a vet) have made it impossible thus far. If you've got the time (and preferably a friend with a car who's willing to partner out there with you or lend you a car) it's worth checking out.

I am currently on the Tufts NICU team, and I'm not sure if they would be willing/able to train new volunteers at this point, but it really would be in their own best interest since so many people go away for the summer and they have a LOT of open shifts on their schedule starting in June! If that's something you'd be interested in, feel free to PM me and I can try and find out and/or put you in touch with the coordinators.

I believe mspca runs a volunteer organization out on Nevins Farm. I've only heard about it through the grapevine .. no idea what you can do out there though >_< Sorry.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive I worked with Black Pond Veterinary Service in Norwell (off of route 3 about 45 minutes from lexington MA) and had good experience there. PM if you want more details.
