I just matched and I was considering getting Lasik corrective eye surgery done before residency . I was wondering if anyone had any negative experience with the procedure. I have heard several horrific testimonials but I am in the process of doing my own research now. Additionally, I am assuming it would be prudent to have some sort of disability insurance before undergoing this procedure.

If you are going to do this, do PRK or LASEK.

Yes, I would get disability, but tbh if you aren't making attending income yet, it's not like it will pay that much. To really hedge your bets, get the surgery after you are making attending pay and have upped your disability insurance coverage to the max and paid it for whatever number of months to exclude it as a pre-existing condition.

You can establish up to $5,000 per month of net/non-taxable disability benefit regardless of income while you are a resident, which is probably more than you will bring home after taxes. Most individual policies have a clause that states cosmetic/transplant/corrective procedures are only covered after you have had the policy in force for at least 6 months.
