It's 1:30am, anyone else up? Well, I thought it'd be helpful if people would post any tricks, shortcuts, and/or mnemonic devices when it came to learning the material. For example...(Some of these I stole from the Pre-Med forum)

1.) A good way to learn what hormones come from the anterior pituitary, just remember FLATPeG.
F=FSH
L=LSH
A=ACTH
T=TSH
P=Prolactin
E=(stands for nothing)
G=Growth Hormone

Posterior Pituitary is just 2 hormones Oxytocin and ADH so that's easy to remember.

2.) This is a way to know which are pyramides and which are purines.
King TUC (tut) is buried in a PYRAMID (Thymine, uracil and cytosine are all pyramidines).
- or -
Pyramids are sharp so they will CUT you.

AG = angels of god are pure like purines

3.) Want to know sperm pathway? Drink SEVEN UP!
Seminiferous tubules
Epididymis
Vas deferens
Ejaculatory duct
N(othing)
Urethra
Penis

4.) Pumpkin," or PUMP K+ IN for the sodium-potassium pump.

3 Na+ out
2 K+ in

5.) STRONG ACIDS (in order of decreasing acidity)::

HI - I
HBr - Bring
HCl - Cans of
HClO4 - Coca
HClO3 - Cola
H2SO4 - So
HNO3 - No

6.) These next 3 have sexual content...

When i think of the pancreas, i think of GIS (pronounced gizz)
alpha cells- Glucagon
beta - Insulin
delta Somatostatin

also, i can remember shwann cells vs oligodendrocytes by remembering that schwann likes penis, so he works in the PNS.

7.) For knowing which one is positive in an electrochemical cell think:

Ape and Cabbage (CPG)

Anode
Positive
Electrolytic

Cathode
Positive
Galvanic

Hopefully this helps with the stress. Study hard folks.

What great tips! Thank you so much and may God bless you as you prepare for your test!🙂 :luck:

...thanx! 🙂

*OOPs, just noticed one mistake....Kinky People Cry Out For Great Sex. F is for Family****

For purines and pyrid:

PURE AGONY - its how i remembered it since high school

Purines = Adenine, guanine

Forgot about this one: probably everyone knows it:
LEO (the lion) goes GER (Grrrr)

Loss electrons oxidized; gain electrons reduced

Thats awesome these will come in handy.
The only one I can think of that everybody probably already knows is
AnOx: Oxidation occurs at anode
RedCat: Reduction occurs at Cathode
thats both for electrolytic and galvonic cells.

OIL RIG:

Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain

CUT the Pye - Cytosine, Uracil, Thymine - PYrimidines.

T&A is twice as nice, or females have two T's 😛 - double bond between thymine and adenine. I used to have a hard time remembering which had double bonds, and which were triple bonds. Since T&A have double bonds, you know C&G are triple bonded.

A Red Cat - Reduction at the Cathode. Oxidation has a long "A" sound in the middle of it. Long A sound corresponds with the initial A in "Anode".

Please excuse my dear aunt Sally (PEMDAS) - Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. Order of operations.

"The rich get richer, the poor get poorer" - Markovnikov's rule regarding which carbon receives the hydrogen.

Absolute configuration of chiral molecules - Left handed people are Sinister (S).

Those are all I can remember off the top of my head. I'm sure there's others though.

Good luck everybody.

Like dissolves likes---- for chemistry. Polar molecules dissolves with polar, unpolar ones with unpolar.

How about King Phillip Came Over for Group Sex?

Calcitonin "Tones down" Calcium (in other words, it reduces blood calcium levels)

"GAIB Sells Drugs" (stands for: Glucagon-alpha, Insulin-beta, Somatostatin-delta)

"Lively Naked Women Try Urgently" (stands for: Liver: Nitrogenous Wastes to Urea)

Good luck everyone!
:luck: 🙂 :luck:

Must Be Good= Morula, Blastula, Gastrula

Good luck everyone on 10/1006 PCAT

Which molecues are FAT Soluble?

KADE (Katie) is FAT!

K-Vitamin K
A-Vitamin A
D-Vitamin D
E-Vitamin E

There is another one to remember kingdom, phylum, etc. etc.

King Phillips Crossed the Ocean For Good Sex

these are great, thanks everyone. sorry I don't have anything. good luck to all of us🙂

hey GrignardRx, do you have some tips on how to do Grignard's reagent from Orgo II?? i thought you would....i misplaced my Orgo II notebook... haha.. so i can't quite refresh my mind on how to do it

d/dx (f/g)(x) = g(x)f'(x) - f(x)g'(x) / (g(x))^2

"low d high minus high d low over low low"

haha. learned that yesterday.

i normally remember the fat soluble vitamins by "ADEK" which is actually a brand name of a otc vitamin in the pharmacy anyway 🙂

Ho D Hi - Hi D Ho all over Ho^2

Ho = denominator
Hi = numerator
D = derivative
Diatomic Elements
Have No Fear of Ice Cold Beer

Hydrogen Nitrogen Fluorine Iodine Chlorine and Bromine

Steriochemistry : Z = zame side (same side)

Oh another one I remember my friend talking about in Orgo...thought of it after I read shaun's post above

Z = substituents on the same side = zis (like cis)

sissy and tranny

for cis: Z
Tran E

Do keep plates clean or family gets sick
domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family genus species.

Just found this nice little thread while searching for something. Thought I'd bump it up for you guys. Some nice tips on there!

And I'll add one of my own that has sort of been covered:

Guardian angels are pure with two wings= guanine and adenine are purines with two rings.

d/dx (f/g)(x) = g(x)f'(x) - f(x)g'(x) / (g(x))^2

"low d high minus high d low over low low"

haha. learned that yesterday.

Thanks for posting shortcuts for math. Does anyone know more shortcuts for math, that's easily remebered, because I don't. Like the derivative and limits, these are the ones I am having the most problems. Also solving equations, and graphing, knowing how to solve them the long way is okay with me but when I am testing ( I took a kaplan course) time is limited and I know on the actual pcat time is limited also. Any suggestions would be helpful, because I am freaking out....really bad..now..

Noone -nose
Please -pharynx
Loose-larynx
Their -trachea
Brain -bronchi
Because -(the other B word which i forgot at the moment)
of
Anatomy-alveoli

i made it by my self ..sorry it sucks...i made up all these other sucky ones too but they help me remember this stuff..🙂

Taking the derivative of a fraction, like F(x)/G(x)...

Simply just say this sentence like 10x, and you'll memorize it. Kinda simple, but I was able to remember it after like 2 yrs w/no problem:

"Bottom times the derivative of the top, minus the top times the derivative of the bottom, all over the bottom squared"

G(x)F'(x) - F(x)G'(x) / (G(x))^2

It seems long when you look at it, but say it a few times. It'll work.

Anyone find any website that could do a quick tutorial on the Math....suggestions would help. The organic tutorial for naming really help...thanks
