After using this site as reference I finally decided to join and see what you think my chances are considering I submitted my application dec 29 to AADSAS and they were mailed 1/15/10

Science 3.86
Total 3.75
DAT:
PAT - 19
QR - 18
RC - 20
BIO -18
GenChem - 21
Organic - 20
Total Science - 20
AA - 19

Graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Accounting in 3 1/4 years
1st Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American.
Drafted and played professional soccer for 1 year

In the process of completing my prerequisites. Will finish this summer with physics in a 9 week intensive course.

My father is a dentist and have spent 50 hours shadowing him. Also shadowed an orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon.

An area of concern:

Unfortunately, I had to take Biology and Organic chemistry online with virtual lab when I couldn't get those classes anywhere because of budget cuts in California. Rather than waiting around, I found next best option. I hope my performance on DAT shows I gained sufficient understanding of material.

Currently enrolled in Biochemistry and Microbiology w/ lab at a UC school while finishing up online courses for 2nd semester of Biology and Organic Chemistry.

Thanks for all of your help and advice. Good luck to all.

Where did you play soccer for undergrad? What team in the pro? If you got drafted and played for say some cheap MLS team then I say your chances of getting in to D-School are low, but if you got drafted to play for a team in Spain,England, or Argentina then if I was a committee member I would give a better look to your application...ha (sorry mls sucks though)

IMO, not strong enough for a late applicant. Sorry. And online classes? There has to be somewhere else you could've taken general bio and ochem. Not a wise decision..

Professional soccer? Thats pretty cool, was it MLS? Or a Mexican B-league? Either way, I think thats a pretty cool transition. You may be a little late for this cycle, but I think you have a good chance for the next. And to the above poster, I think it would depend on the admissions members, not many people are familiar with international soccer leagues, even if they may (or may not be) better than the MLS. As for online courses, I don't know, I think many schools prefer these pre-reqs to be taken in a classroom at a 4 year University.

I hope he understood I was being sarcastic, about how the admissions would look at his app. MLS does suck though straight up. I am also a college soccer player, and I don't know if it helped me, but I am going to dental school next year

Thank you for all of your input. I would rather keep those other things private in keeping with the anonymity of this site.

where did you take online courses at? was it through University's extension program or just an online university? I think either way, you will have hard time making the cut just because pre-reqs are not taken at an accredited university. I think the best would be to contact school and see if they will even consider taking credits from your online courses (b/c if they don't, then you need to start looking at retaking them).
also how many schools did you apply to and where?

I am taking classes through the University of New England. The have a distance post-bacc program. These classes require proctored final exams which are sent directly to verified college professors. These classes are acceptable and the University of New England's medical school. I did my best to research for credibility.

i think you have a decent chance getting in this cycle, especially with a unique experience like pro soccer. i may just be biased because i played div 1 soccer in college as well, but it takes special talent to do it at the next level-hopefull adcoms recognize that. whats worst case scenario? you dont get in this cycle? just apply early and stay involved with the youth soccer community, get your pre reqs done and youll have a real strong app. good luck

You sir, are delusional.

What does pro soccer bring to dental school applications? I don't want to be rude but I just don't see how that correlates and considering the fact that his app was mailed in January.

Being a Pro Soccer player and playing college soccer and still managing to get a 3.8 and ok DAT scores, shows that this person is a hard worker and is very dedicated to the things he does. It also shows that he is a well rounded person that was able to do other things on the side besides academics. Though I am not sure if he has a shot this cycle because it is so late, but that is how I feel it correlates to dental school applications. I applied late app complete 11/26 with a below average GPA, and still got into two great schools.

The deadline for over one half of the schools had passed long before the application was submitted. The gpa and the DAT scores are out of synch. Ambidexterity of hands is a bit more relevant to dentistry than ambidexterity of feet. Which part of the application is supposed to wow adcoms?

you're right, he should probably just not include that on his app

Although way too late for this cycle, I would think you would be a shoe-in for next go around.

As a former NCAA athlete, let me tell you, the value of playing for a team is not in the skill sets trained daily (soccer for example) but rather in the team atmosphere, the goal setting, the daily hard work, the time management, dealing with road games/travel and still getting a high GPA, etc. etc.

Many non athletes try to negate these things, but simply put, a frat/soror. is not the same experience as being an athlete. Admin. recognize this and will be impressed with your GPA and DAT.
good luck,
Anschutz

I was a D1 athlete for four years. It was brought up twice in interviews. It certainly won't get you in the door but it is a interview topic.

I'm not too sure this guy is going to be a "shoe-in". A 19AA doesn't exactly part the Red Sea.

It sounds like this guy has a lot going for him. But I wouldn't bank on the whole "I was an athlete" card. With a high GPA and an average AA, adcoms might have reservations.

My advice: Retake the DAT in May, apply June 1st, and make some money between now and fall '11.

Good luck!

Yea, exactly. It was brought up in one of my interviews and that's it. Most schools didn't even want to hear about it. They were more curious as to why I didn't do any research.
