Late applicants still waiting for interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not really. I was complete around the same time and already heard back...

Then again, sometimes they tell you something, just to tell you something. I called Pitt the other day, and the lady said I was still under review (post interview) but when I went home that evening, there was an acceptance letter in the mailbox. So obviously, I was not still under review. I think they might just tell that to everyone just as a blanket statement since they aren't allowed to release decisions over the phone. But I guess there isn't much you can do about it if you've already called and asked...

Good luck though!

This sucks. I have this feeling of doom because I can't see myself getting anymore interviews this late in the season. I feel like my application is just left on a shelf to attract dust. Why didn't I apply earlier??? I feel like I am a good applicant, above average, but am getting no love. Please, send something in the mail soon! 😕

ladydoc youre awesome!! (AND you actually bother to answer my inane questions =) ) anyways i just wanted to wish everyone on this thread lots of good news and say (though i already have on this thread) that i too am quite a late applicant as well as a *desperate* one that applied to (not quite done yet!!) ~35 schools--yess im totally bROKE!!--i hope it pays off 😵;

I love this thread!!
I hope this provides a little hope for you LATER applicants like me. I took the August MCAT which pushed everything back a bit...I was complete at most school Nov 1st, (secondaries were in Sept-Oct but letters of rec were not!)

I received 9 interviews so far (three of which came last week and this week!) and one rejection from Georgetown.
I got accepted to my first school two days ago!!! (Carver College in Iowa!)
I have been on 3 interviews so far (U of Michigan, Iowa, MSU) and going to UCLA tomorrow...I am a Cali resident and went to a UC. (applied to 32 schools, b/c I am paranoid!)

I have a 32S MCAT and an steep upwardly bound GPA (3.7-3.9 last 2.5 years) but overall is lower than that. And good EC's including a publication.

Don't give up hope, its still relatively early. For those hearing back from U of M today, good luck!!!!

its ok--i know exactly how you feel---and i definitely feel that i screwed myself--but at this point i can only keep goin--cuz it aint over till its over and seriously 'who knows' riggght?? ive heard too many stories of people interviewing late and gettin in--so im praying that we'll be like them this year!

MEDUSA23- I feel your pain...Just sitting quietly and checking my mail obsessively until I get a positive response ANYWHERE. Waiting and praying as time goes by...😀

Hopefully they will start sending out more invites as soon as their break is over. I've been complete since the beginning to mid October and had 1 interview so far. Here's to getting more in the new year! :luck:

Just want to bring this thread back up to the top of the forum, while I hope that I will get 1-2 more interviews.

I was complete at all but two schools by mid november- those two- mid Dec. I got interviews at both of the two that I finished in December (Duke and Stony Brook). Also one other at UVm (I'm a NY resident) I have rejects from Georgetown and 1 SUNY post secondary, Wake Forest presecondary, app on hold at GWU and another SUNY. Haven't heard anything from 18 schools (except that irritating red email from Tulane that keeps me from calling and asking what's up with the app)

Quick stats: BCPM: 3.0 Overall 3.41
Ivy Masters degree- BCPM 3.8 Overall 3.9
dope ECs
dope LORs
intl health interest
MCAT: 30R (bs 11, ps 10, vr 9?)

Was complete at schools between mid to late October. Have two interviews from SUNYs, a pre-interview hold (UPenn) and two rejections (URoch and UCSF). Otherwise still waiting to hear back from 14 schools.

Good luck to you Medusa23. You're not alone in waiting.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else. Haven't heard anything. Do schools normally communicate via email or snail mail?

It all depends on the school. Some are known to get back as late as March, which is nice just to think about. As a fellow late applicant, I feel your pain, but I've found it very therapeutic to sift through some similar late applicant threads from last year. Many people ended up getting accepted, some even as late as June. It may be an illicit contrast to suggest that applying late hurts you. It's true that applying early helps, but the inverse isn't by necessity true.

I hope you're right about that getting in late thing. Here is my theory for that. Medical schools have a certain amount of slots to fill and by the end of the semester, schools that still have open seats are trying to fill them?

There's a lot of good threads on this, but they have "slots" in the sense that they're looking to book a certain number of students for the next year. Since they can estimate the number that will matriculate after being accepted, they aim for a ballpark and hope for a range. That said, schools (though it varies from place to place) at this point are still interviewing for "direct admission," meaning that they're actively looking for candidates to fill spots. That hasn't changed since the summer. The only difference is that the summer kids have the added advantage of a long and unpredictable year ahead of them. I wouldn't say it's a disadvantage, but that could just be a glass-half-full perspective.

When I completed my AMCAS in June, I hadn't taken my second MCAT and I wasn't sure if I would do better or worse. So I didn't put a future MCAT date since I know you should apply as early as possible. My MCAT was 28Q, and GPA 3.4. Given that's not really competitive, I applied broadly, to 35 schools. (plus I'm a CA resident). I have lots of volunteering, 3 years of research, was in the marching band.

Got rejected by some schools even before my July MCAT. But I ended up doing better on the MCAT the second time, a 33. But some schools still show only the 1st MCAT.

Due to the amount of schools I applied, the secondaries quickly overwhelmed me. I completed some in August, some in Set, Oct, and finished some just before the new year.

So far I've only gotten rejections or on-hold's. I came here to see what's going on with the schools I finished early, but all I saw was ppl getting accepted, or at least interviewed....I started freaking out, and started crying.....🙁

I thought I was the only one screwed up with application~~~but I'm glad to hear other out there.....

Let's keep running in this game then!

It is somehow comforting to know that I am not the only person to apply really late. I have felt like I completely shot myself in the foot; how could I have been naive enought to think I could get away with submitting AMCAS in November?...Anyway, it may ease a few minds, just a little bit, to know that I got two interview invites last week. (E. VA and Duke). And my stats, while competitive at many places, are not stellar. (3.94 and 33Q; not spectacular ECs). I have pretty much accepted that I probably won't hear from many (or any) more out of state schools, but I am still holding out hope for my orange and blue alma mater.

sorry about the double post...(he says as he draws more attention to his incompetence by posting yet again)

Don't give up hope! Though I agree that the waiting does get to be miserable, this application season is NOT over.

I also took the August MCAT and I waited to see if my scores were competive before deciding whether to apply this year. It went well, so I did. 🙂 I sent secondaries to ten schools and was complete at all of them in November. I have been invited to interview at five of the ten (two state schools, 3 OOS) and was just accepted to my top choice.

So...it CAN happen...it just a long and frustrating game. Every school I've been to insisted that they interview through at least March and that those who interview later in the year are not at a disadvantage. However, I am sure this varies by school.

Oooo lordie now, trouble so hard
Oooo lordie now, trouble so hard...
don't nobody know mah trouble but god

Went down the hill, th'other day..
Went down the hill and trouble was there...

duke, very nice. Congrats, I didn't submit duke because of the secondary questions, way toooo long and hard. Also because it was really late in the game (dec.). Now I'm thinking maybe I made a mistake.

Hey all - just trying to give a little hope.

I applied "late" - my application was complete (LORs and everything) at all schools Oct 25th. I received three interview invites within three weeks. Then nothing.

For three months.

In the past two weeks I have received two rejection letters.

And two interview invites.

So now I have five schools considering me. I had seriously given up. But I don't feel so let down anymore, it is very possible to get interviews, even now, because like others have sad some schools interview all the way into April. Good luck all!

I'm still with you Cheetos!! Give me medschool or give me death!!

Long live the 2-7am crew...playas, hol' me down!

I'll share some of my GPA if you'll share some of your MCAT. Together we can make an unstoppable interview-receiving monster.

That would be stupendous. I'm game...Wanna play 'two headed doctor'?

JD: 'Now TALK to it.'

I completed some secondaries just before their deadlines- Dec 1st, Dec 15th, Dec 31st, Jan 1st, Jan 15th. There's one school still incomplete. Applied to 18 schools..Have had 6 rejection letters. An interview from one of the earlier schools that I applied to. My question is, if you ever receive an interview from the later schools, what reasons would you give to the question of 'why applied late', if it ever comes up?

I sent out a secondary on the last possible day (Dec 15 or 31 can't remember which) and got an interview invite today, so they're still coming for other people who applied late 🙂

I think you would be suprised by how many 37-43 MCATers don't get into their first choice schools. It makes me wonder what medical schools truly want from an applicant.

I think the reason is because the MCAT is a screen, of sorts .. in a sense, getting a high MCAT makes you less likely to be rejected because of your MCAT alone; however, you have yet to show them why, from a medical school standpoint, you ought to get in. GPA, I believe, works the same way; they are tools that help the ADCOM order the applicants according to the order in which they should read the apps, but neither should actually cause you to get into medical school; merely, they simply prevent you from getting rejected due to MCAT and GPA alone. You need stellar extra-curriculars that show you really love this stuff, and that's what gets you in, along with a great interview. MCATs and GPAs are like the screens, and the personality, LORs, extra-curriculars, and the interview are the boosters, things that actually propel you towards acceptance.

I know of at least one person who got a 38 on his MCATs, but never got in, because he had no extracurriculars that would push him forward.

I was complete at most schools by November. I've gotten 1 interview and I am waiting to hear from the rest. I won't hear from KU until mid Feb or March but I'm not sure I can wait.

i submitted my AMCAS primary in September, but didn't get most of my secondaries in until like the day of the deadline. i've gotten a few rejections, but one interview invite within a few days after sending in my secondary to that school (that secondary was sent in 12/20)! i'm convinced there is still hope :luck:

Thanks for the glimmer of hope mangos! I too submitted my secondaries awfully near their deadlines . . . I felt like the only one out there! (SDN will do that to you) Two rejections so far and no interviews for me . . . I think I'm going to call and inquire about when some of my schools finish interviewing . . . and reiterate my strong desire to interview with them while doing so! At this point, I think it's better than keeping my fingers crossed and refreshing my inbox every two seconds. :scared:

:luck: to all of us late-appliers!

i submitted AMCAS in november and secondaries on the last day (11/15, 12/1, 1/15 depending on the school)... definitely regretting the procrastination! applied to 12 schools; 2 rejections and 2 interviews so far. the rest of the schools are totally SILENT. the interview invites were within 10 days of my app to those schools so it has me worried about the others... is it worth reapplying for next cycle? if i apply in june, i'll have just graduated but there wont really be any changes on my app cuz i wont have graduated till may. is timing really that important or should i wait a yr and try to accomplish something in that time? anyone else thinking about this?
if it matters:
MCAT 35P
BCPM 3.78 (overall 8.83)
ECs= clinical research for past 2 yrs, shadowing.

Sheesh! With those stats, it's not surprising that you got two quick interviews. Mine are *ahem* not quite as stellar, so I haven't been surprised at my lack of interviews thus far (but yet, I keep hoping for a mircale!)

As far as reapplying in June, I think you'd likely do fine with those scores, as long as you apply broadly and to your state schools (disclaimer: of course, I don't know how great your LORs, PS, etc. are). My plan if I don't get in this cycle is to revamp my PS a bit, apply June 1 to lots of schools that fit my stats (and maybe to DOs as well . . . have to think about that) and to turn quality secondaries around in a flash. I really, truly believe that if I do this, I will get in somewhere. Check out MDapps and search for scores like yours, etc. I think you'll see that applying early can and does, in fact, make a big difference.

But that's my plan. I'm a non-trad who's certainly not getting any younger and would like to get this med school thing started already! If you think a Master's would be a better route for you to take before med school, that is totally up to you. Just judging by your stats, though, I think you'd be fine with an early app next cycle (if, of course, you don't make it in this year, which seems like a definite possibility!) :luck::luck:

I applied within the last few days before the deadlines pretty much everywhere, and I have had 3 invites so far, and I really anticipate getting 3 to 6 more, though I could be wrong. Everyone keep your head up, there's still some time left.

i'm scary similiar to you

applied to 11 schools at pretty much the deadline for all. 2 interviews, 2 rejections, and everyone else is silent.

MCAT 34P
BCPM 3.84
3 Pubs (1 first author)

I have four interview invites so far, all for February:

Yale, GWU, TOURO-NV, and TOURO-CA

Rejected at: Duke, WashU, Wayne State, UF

I was complete at Yale and GW in mid-December and everywhere else in late-December/early January. (Yale gave me an extension)

Everyone keeps posting stats so here are mine:

GPA: 3.45
Sci GPA: 3.3
MCAT 30 (three tens)
University of Michigan class of '08

Not particularly impressive, right? Here's what I've heard over and over again: once you get a reasonable GPA and MCAT, at many med schools, they no longer matter so much. There are far more important ways to stand out than doing even better on a stupid standardized test or a slightly better GPA.

Med schools can fill their ranks five times over with bio majors with high gpa's. What did I do? I double-majored in biopsych and english, did multiple areas of research including an honors thesis and a publication, worked my way up the ranks of the student newspaper (even got a column), did EMT training through the specialist level, shadowed a doctor, volunteered as an EMT for the Red Cross, and got five letters of recommendation that, according to my interviewer "I owe all of them dinner."

It's not just because of my good looks and charming personality.

So quit the stats bullcrap. You can apply late and get good interviews. More important, make sure your application says why you want to be a doctor and show them you're not just another uninteresting biology major clone. There's so much else to learn at a university! Go check it out.

Yes, EC's are important. Do you know what's more important? stats.

10 schools, completed in Nov/Dec. Complete silence!

just got an interview today scheduled for march... there's still hope

i donno if this counts but i hope it will spike the hope on this thread as i most definitely consider myself a late applicant --

submitted my hopkins app online on the deadline but couldnt get a hard copy sent in until later that week (i think 12/7)

NEVER received a complete notice--finally got a hold of someone who told me my app was marked late and hence would be reviewed but was not yet considered complete...

jan 29 12am eastern time..received an e-mail from the assoc dean of admissions at hopkins (i believe that is the correct title) saying they had not yet received my LORs --that this was a very 'unusual delay' of over 4 weeks and basically i better get my act together!! 😵!!!

jan 30 freaked out--got in touch with my pre-med committee got everything figured out..was assured my app would still be read...

today: invite for feb =) ---it means they are still considering and reading applications at the very least!!!

good luck everyone :luck:

oH and JUST TODAY i received a postcard from OHSU saying my app was complete...so now i am officially COMPLETE at all the schools i want to be considered at...*phew* took long enough..hehe

I got an invite last Friday and another today. I applied pretty much as late as possible. Stay positive, it'll happen.

i believe that most applicants deserve to be physicians some day because your patience and determination, as exhibited during this horrific application process, is a testament to the perseverance and care you will one day display for a patient in need. sure, we were late with our applications. sorry we didn't submit our primary in June and our secondaries to July. congrats to all those who were admitted in october, you definitely deserve it for getting your stuff together.

for any applicants out there who are at the moment doubting themselves or getting nervous, JUST remember that this application is FAR from over and have FAITH. in the end, what's the worse that happens? sure, we lost a bunch of money and time, and for a lot of us, that money and time were hard to come by. but we are still whole, conscious, and hardworking human beings. stay the course, and if it doesn't work out, life still finds a way of piecing it all together.

sorry to get all sentimental on this thread but if all you late applicants are anything like me, any and all support in the form of encouraging words is always greatly appreciated!

much :luck: to everyone!

That is quite a story, and you must be quite an applicant to get a Hopkins interview . . . particularly after all of that craziness! Congrats and :luck:!

Still no interview invites for me and I'm still afraid of my mailbox, but this thread is certainly giving me some hope. :luck: to all!

P.S. - I had a thought the other day that at least by applying late I saved myself a few months of constantly checking my e-mail! This really is torturous!!

Hah...

My hope is circling the drain (but not my persistence, don't worry!): Just received a 'correspondance mailed' notice from temple.

Medschools - 7
Vihsadas - 0

i'm really sorry to hear the Vihsadas .. did you already interview at Temple? If so, it could mean waitlist, which is all they're doing at the moment I hear

I think my virtual evals went out in late Nov finalizing all my applications....
My states - 3.35 GPA, 3.13 science, 3.7 non-science from Arizona State.
MCAT 31R - 10V, 10B, 11P

Applied to 22 schools and SGU in the Carribean:
As of right now I've only interviewed in Arizona (where I was pretty much guaranteed one since I'm a resident) and for SGU.

9 other rejections, one we'll review again later and 11 I'm still waiting to hear from.

Any advice? I sent updates to all the schools.

I LOVE this thread. It's good to know there's more of us out there. I got most of my secondaries out by late Nov and a couple by late Dec. One of my LORs didn't reach the schools until very close to each deadline.

So far, just one interview invite to Case Western (both University and College programs) and seven rejections: UT Galveston, UChicago, Jefferson, SUNY Upstate, BU, Mayo, and Georgetown. Waiting to hear back from 15...

Good luck to everyone 🙂

Just curious, which school?
got an interview for umass (my state school)...
but i am a "weired applicant" if you want to know my stats just look around and a post i started here a while ago asking for advice...
