A quick rundown..went to an out of state school my first two years, struggled with depression, ADD, you name it. Was an idiot who managed a pathetic 2.03 GPA.

Got sent away to work construction by my dad to clear my head and pay some of my school debts..Transferred upon my return to an in state school where I graduated with a 3.6 GPA.

Not sure what my cumulative GPA is but I have a 3.7 for my last 96 hours of classes along with a 3.75 science GPA. Will adcom at least consider this? I am very worried my overall GPA will be a kill shot for applying to even DO schools..

Do I have a chance at all?

MDs will want an absolute avg and so will DO.....the expectation of DOs are slightly lower and they allow retakes.

do some math and come back with real numbers

So come back with my exact cGPA, correct? Sorry I just didn't know if there were schools that would strongly consider an upward swing more than others..thanks for the replies

If your GPA is above a 3.0 with that kind of upward trend, with a competitive MCAT score you can potentially be a realistic DO candidate. Re-take some of the classes you got C's or lower in and that'll boost your DO GPA real fast and make it even more competitive. If you are boning for the MD, there's a good shot you will still need further academic enhancement and an SMP is probably your best option there. Of course this is all dependent on the MCAT.

There are schools that reward upward trends to answer your question.

Thank you for the reply, grapesofrath..

One last question and I will quit bugging you guys..Say I have about 10 classes that I got C's and D's on when I took them as a naive freshman..will retaking them make any real difference on my GPA if I've already accumulated 124 hours of college credits? Just wondering if it is even worth pursuing if that GPA won't be able to get above the 3.0 mark.

Thank you sincerely

For DO schools yes.

Thank you.

Unfortunately the school i transferred from as a sophomore only allows 3 retakes, and I already surpassed this. My main concern is with my GPA from one school to another. If the committee were to look at my 7o something odd hours at the university I graduated from, I'd have a decent 3.6..But if they were to average all the schools i've attended, i'd probably have a dismal 2.8.

Gonna call a few DO schools in state tomorrow and see how they look at this to know if I have a shot.

What is your cGPA? Don't worry that your school only allows three retakes. You aren't doing it for them and you aren't using the grades/classes for grad requirements. Retake the classes at a local college during the summer or after you graduate. It would be helpful to know your total GPA. Are we talking 2.xxx or 3.xxx? Big difference in game plan. And lots of schools do reward reinvention but you are going to have to include all of your college work on your AMCAS/ACOMAS primaries.
