Hello, I am new to the forum and have been looking around for people who are currently in a similar situation as me. I am considering a future in the field of health care, but wanted to see if it were a realistic goal given my current academic status. I am finishing up my first year at a community college (I chose to attend one because following high school, I had no idea on what I wanted to do, or career I wanted to pursue) I currently have a 3.2 gpa and basically have been taking science classes every semester (bio,chem,calc,anat/phys) which fascinated me and ultimately led to my decision. I am majoring in bio-chem and plan on transferring to a university after I finish up all of my basic-ed requirements. I understand my gpa is mediocre, but now having an actual goal, I plan on working hard to improve it and bettering my chances as to getting accepted. Reading around, I see the majority of students preparing themselves as early as high school, and am very aware of its necessity when considering a career in this profession. I want to see how a school would view my decision and if they would take me seriously, what kind of programs may be available to me, and basically if its at all realistic considering such a profession so late.

And please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to help better understand my situation. Any and all input is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Show me these high school students that you see preparing for their careers in healthcare because I would say they are a huge minority. It's good to think ahead, but that's just ridiculous. I can tell you it's not necessary at all, and the only thing it does is make you look kinda like a tool. If I understand correctly, you are not even a sophomore yet. That isn't late at all. Go check out the non-trad forum. There are plenty of people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. that realize they want a career in medicine, quit their jobs, and start going back to school. You are by no means behind.

👍
it's never too late to pursue a career in medicine
just read sdn for awhile (preferably premed) and you'll find many cases similar to yours

People frantically trying to prepare* in highschool are nuts. Anything you accomplish in high school short of heroism is, in the grand scheme of things, so marginal as to be slipping over the side.

*although I don't count volunteering in health care to get a feel for it. But it's not like a medical school will give a damn about it. A college doesn't really care about whether or not you were voted most likely to succeed in middle school either.

Like others have already stated, you have plenty of time. People decide to pursue medicine as 2nd or 3rd careers, so don't feel like you're behind. I also wouldn't be so concerned over the gpa either, since you'll have at least two more years worth of classes. Just get in some shadowing and concentrate on doing your best in the classroom. Feel free to browse through this site using the search function, it probably has answers to almost any query you might have.
