Quick facts
- First interview received in August from Drew/UCLA
- Second interview received mid-Feb from Jefferson
- Third interview received early-March from GWU
- ORM, non-trad class of 2014
- Did not apply to state schools in Texas (I'm stupid I know)
- LizzyM ~70
- 1 first author pub + several research posters and ackowledgments
- TFA, master's degree in education, additional full-time jobs in health education
- excellent recs (or at least I think so)

No decisions (rejections or waitlists) yet.

Thoughts?

How many schools did you apply to and did you apply to any "safeties"? I'm assuming you had people look over your PS, but just in case you didn't, I'm gonna ask did you? Did you practice interviewing? Did you have anything unique on your application? TFA is great and all, but what else did you do? Though with a LizzyM of 70 I'm surprised you didn't get more invites.

And what @SuaveCardigans said.

I applied to 28 schools - still in the running for Einstein. I don't think my list, which included Tulane, Wake Forest, Oakland, Wayne, was particularly top-heavy. I feel like my personal statement was solid and yes, my pre-med committee assigned a writing tutor to look it over, per protocol. I co-founded and piloted a healthcare education startup which led to a research pub and my current job. I also have written for several national publications because writing is a hobby... And yes please, continue making me feel bad for not applying to Texas schools, I actually and totally deserve the chastisement.

If you’re a TX resident, why would you want to go anywhere else? Cheapest tuition, low COL, you name it.

I’m genuinely interested in understanding why you tried to leave the great state of TX, honestly.

I'm curious too...not trying to make you feel bad at all just curious as to why you didn't want to apply to TX schools?

And yes definitely plan on reapplying. Did you get your AMCAS in as soon as the application opened? If you have to reapply, obviously apply to your state schools and maybe the new schools like Seton Hall, Nova, maybe some low-mid tiered schools as well. Sorry you didn't have much luck thus far but hey, its not over yet. Good luck!

To note: I did not make any reference to you not applying to TX schools.

Considering the number of schools you applied to and the specific schools you mentioned, it is odd you didn't get more invites. And based on your first interview being in August, it looks like you applied early.

Same as TPH225, I am not trying to make you feel worse than you already do. I once thought NYC is where I wanted to go so I left TX. It took me less than two years to realize you can’t beat it here.

Yes, especially for my MMI... I'd like to think that I am a decent interviewer - got into TFA which has a rigorous interviewing process, a fellowship after TFA with a 2% acceptance rate, and my current job where I was hired despite not having direct experience in the field.

The fact that you didn't apply to the texas schools makes me sick to my stomach. Id do anything to be a resident of texas when applying came around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

Multiple reasons: laziness because of separate application portal, little desire to live in Texas (I was still in the whole mindset of "I want to live in the east coast!"), sheer folly of not thinking through the implications

Well, then you got me. Maybe you were just extremely, extremely unlucky.

I still don't understand why you didn't get more interview invites, though. If your pre-med committee was rigorous enough that they assign writing tutors, they must have looked over your entire application very carefully so you should have gotten at least 5 invites if not more. Don't know what else to say.

Any shadowing hours? Did you have direct patient contact in the health education jobs?

And isn't TFA paid? May not count in their eyes to be a volunteer experience then...

Hey on the good side you will not be a reapplicant at any of the Texas medical schools 🙂

I think that in May you can prepare your TMDSAS application and get ready to apply to all the TX schools. Baylor is on the AMCAS app system. Take a look at your personal statements and see if they still reflect and represent you. If not, change them up a bit. At the very least, reword them a little.

Once you have done your apps, while you are waiting, keep,up with some volunteering in your community. Good luck next cycle and PM me with any TX questions.

True, but OP will have to answer Yes to the TMDSAS app question that asks if they have applied to non TMDSAS medical schools before, and if OP gets interviews, they might be asked why they didn't apply to TMDSAS schools, and they need to come up with a better answer than below...

Whew....Leave it to SDN to make someone feel like a failure lol. Anyway, thanks for the advice and lively discussion folks.
