**Late Night Thread**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your post is cracking me up!

The way I see it, people can tell what you look like (not you, but a hypothetical you) when you have your clothes on. For example, it isn't going surprise people if someone has a fat stomach...unfortunately you can tell that through a T-shirt. I'm not in medical school, but I would guess that people take their shirts off and on during OMM.

Chicken parmesan is amazing...you should try it with goat cheese sometime. It will blow your mind!

Wait, so does that mean you undress people with your eyes too? I thought I was the only one. 😛

Oh goat cheese sounds good! I actually used fat free cheese. It's like my mind was preparing me for OMM lab without me even realizing it. Way to go, mind!!

And thanks PJ. 😉

Speaking of tattoos...

I have one on my left wrist of my fiance's initials, which can be covered with a watch if I *have* to. I was thinking of getting a tattoo to commemorate getting into DO medical school (when I do get in), but wonder if it would be premature to get something like the staff with the snake twirly thing? Not really sold on this design yet, but I do want something symbolic.

What does the Late Night crew think?

I love this idea! If you get it, can I be your OMM partner? I want to touch your snake. On your tattoo I mean.

But really, it sounds like a great idea. I'm not into getting tattoos on my own body, but it's cool to see other people have them...kinda like spinner-rims with neon blue lights. 👍

But I hate spinner rims, especially with neon blue lights 🙁

I meant it as an example of something I like to see on others but I'd never get myself.

Go for the tatt! Where were you planning on getting it?

ahah I know what you meant. I was just playin.

Unsure of where to get it yet. Probably something near the shoulders.

Tattoos and OMM lab are very interesting.

One day this guy volunteered to be the patient and out of nowhere, comes a tramp stamp!! With roses and thorns and everything!

Seen lots of tribal tattoos on guys, occasional skull here and there.

I'm not against tattoos or piercings but I do worry about residencies seeing them if they are readily visible.

I would hold off on getting a medically related tattoo. Maybe I'm just old school, but you gotta pay your dues son.

I worry about residencies as well, but luckily most places on the body are easily covered by a long-sleeve dress shirt and some nice slacks.

I'm not the type to get tattoos just for the hell of it, or to look "cool." (I'm not saying that some guys don't get tattoos that mean something, but I'm pretty sure 90% of guys with tribal **** just want to look cool). I'm very big on tattoos having meaning, and being admitted to medical school is a major life change which would hold meaning to me.

I think you should get a tattoo of your avatar. It'll be symbolic of your time on SDN. 🙂

FIRE IT UP!!

So I've been thinking about what my first choice schools will be OOS. Obviously as a TX resident, all the TX schools are priority. I'm really liking what I've heard about DMU... and the tuition isn't as bad as some DO schools. I love how they laid out a budget for incoming students that includes everything:

http://www.dmu.edu/financial-aid/tuition-and-budget-information/doctor-of-osteopathic-medicine

It looks like about $260k for all 4 years. It's cheaper than KCUMB, AZCOM, KCOM, and NSU. That's neat!

And I went sloppy on my healthy eating today. Was out all day and ended up getting some fresco tacos from Taco Bell. I have to admit, they taste pretty darn good. 👍

hello fellow late -nighters .... Sucks that I have no way to kill time..Anyone suggest any good books to read?

already read it !

already read it !
Hot Lights Cold Steel
The Diving Bell and The Butterfly
Blink

This reminds me of a time I went to this bar with some friends a year ago, and it turned out to be a gay bar. I've never been much of a bar-goer before this event since I don't drink alcohol... but I can confidently say that you would have to literally drag me to go to a bar now after what happened that night. lol.

I think they smelled the fresh meat, but I left before they pounced. :scared:

Hi guys, I am a night owl by nature so will likely stop by on this thread, especially on weekends.

If you're gonna go DO note that you want a tattoo of the Staff of Aesclepius and not a caduceus. The caduceus is for MDs, the DOs use Aesclepius. The main difference is that there is only one snake on the DO symbol.

Also, OMM attire varies somewhat by school. Some schools apparently let you wear scrubs or other loose clothing. Most DO schools, though, including mine, require that men be in shorts only and women in shorts and a sports bra. So, far, it has been shirts off for every lab at my school. Keep in mind, you only have your shirt off when your partner is practicing on you on the table. So, it isn't the whole time. I am still getting used to it, not a fan of taking my shirt off especially when we are having a practical quiz and a dozen people are staring at me and the person taking a test on me but you gotta do what you gotta do. In my class, there are all body types from very fit and athletic to average and then to people like me with too much, ahem, adipose tissue. Trust me, the average DO class is not full of Miss America and Mr. Universe contestants!

I can only hope that I wake up tomorrow with one of these on my body...Here's to hoping!

I was wondering if anyone knew the OMM lab dress code for DMU, KCUMB, or TCOM? I know t-shirts go off when acting as the patient... but do you have to sit for like 10 minutes, or is it like a minute every once in a while? Again, I'm not basing any huge decisions on this, so don't turn this wonderful late night thread into a flame war. +pissed+

Didn't finish reading this whole thread since I need to log off now, but in case no one has answered yet - at DMU you don't need to take off your shirt. Sometimes you just need to lift it up a bit. We just wear a t-shirt and shorts (or pants). It just has to be the uniform that you buy in the bookstore.

Nifty.

So I'm now considering OOS schools between DMU and KCUMB. I added KCUMB because I know a lot of people there, so it'd be good to be there... even though SCHOOL wise, I'd love to go to DMU.

But of course... TCOM is my first choice. It's weird that some people got interview invites within 2-3 days after submitting their secondary and I've been waiting a month! Of course, I'm not implying they don't deserve the invite. I'm just being bitter, lol. Hopefully a good sleep tonight will get me over it.

I'm planning on writing a letter of interest the next couple days and will send it the first day of October if I don't get an invite. I hope it does some good! I'm going to pour my heart into it.

Hello all. I'm up tonight trying to wrap my mind around this organic chemistry. I really thought I was all over it until the professor showed an example of a test. I think I soiled myself then. Now I'm not going to sleep until the semester is over I'm afraid...

Hm... well my advice for organic chemistry has always been to understand it conceptually as opposed to memorize everything. You'd be surprised how many mechanisms you can logic your way through just by understanding the simple concept of molecular stability.

Best of luck buddy. 👍

I appreciate it. I'm doing my best to understand everything. There's just a lot to understand. 😱 Anyway, got some coffee. Going to make it a long night tonight.

I'm doing the O-chem thing tonight myself in the passenger seat of the ambulance. If you haven't got it already, Organic Chemistry As A Second Language is a good book too. We just started mechanisms ourselves. I'm still trying to grasp IUPAC names!

Got it! Excellent. That's what gave me my false sense of security. I mean, I have done every problem in the first 5 chapters. I've gone over my book, but the test I was shown was Greek. Insane. Anyway, you guys are ahead of us for now. My professor felt the first week of class should be devoted to explaining the syllabus over and over and telling us all about himself. Also how wonderful the world of organic chemistry really is. 1. I don't really care about hearing him speak about himself for an hour when there is so much to learn. 2. I'm already sold on taking the class, hence the reason I'm sitting there. 3. An hour to review the syllabus is mind numbingly boring! Anyways... best of luck to you and I'm going for another cup o joe 🙂

Did everyone decide to sleep? This was at the bottom of the second page!!

oh noess. I guess there wasn't anything interesting to talk about.

So uh... how about that U.S. Opens finals? Epic third set, but Novak had Nadal's number on almost every play.

So I told the girl that I was thinking about getting a tattoo when I get accepted into medical school, and she was all like "hell yea!" and then I said what do u think of the Caduceus thingamabober? and then she rolled her eyes in disgust and told me not to get that (She's an RN, and thinks its stupid to get a medical related tattoo. She said I should get an animal instead. I love her, but she's silly 🙂 )

🙁 sad panda 🙁 back to the drawing board.

Her advice was to get an animal? Oh my...

My friend is getting an awesome tattoo of DNA on his arm. It's a copy of this one:

It's a bit much, but I told him he would officially reach Legendary status if he follows through with it.

I am a Hospital Corpsman in the military and the Caduceus is our insignia that we wear on all our uniforms. I (like most other Corspman) was going to get a Caduceus tatoo after graduating Hospital Corps school because I thought it would be cool. I am soooooo glad I didn't. Looking back after being a Corpsman for 4 years and seeing others with that tatoo I now recognize that this is something that only junior Corpsman with little forsight into the future do. The novelty will wear off shortly after getting the tatoo and then you will feel like an idiot (not to sound harsh).

....go with the animal....lol.

....perfect example of a very regrettable tatoo. I bet the whole time the tatoo artist was thinking...."what a freakin dork".

Or, if you want to be a great OMM partner... you could go with this:

It'll make finding those vertebrae a breeze. 👍

He could always cut off his arm and grow another one. Oh wait... I guess that's another reason why starfish > humans. 😡

You know I didn't mean it like that.. 🙄

Yeah, I wanna be a real doc!! Seriously, My interests are more broad than dentistry can offer. I want to practice within a wider scope. I also met a cool DO who inspired me to apply. He's an author and focuses on weight loss. One of my passions.

Go for it. As a dentist, not one of my patients responded negatively to them. (In response to body artwork!)

That's really cool. I was honestly just curious. Will you use both in practice or how does that work?

Literally me right now (Except change "bed" to "clinic"):

Both MD and DO use the staff of aesclepius. Its the same symbol. The only difference is DOs put an obnoxious DO on the sides: i.e. "D <staff> O". But I believe that the DO lettering is unofficial as the staff of aesclepius is not the symbol of MDs, but the symbol of all physicians (including the european MBBS and MBBCh degrees), and that the DO letters are just there for extra degree pride.

The caduceus is actually the symbol of merchants, but very few merchants (save a few publishing companies) actually ever use it. The people who *do* use it are the physician soldiers of the US armed forces. A long time ago when selected badge designs for the medics of the armed services someone messed up and chose the caduceus over the staff of aesclepius. Its stuck ever since and is considered the appropriate symbol for those in armed forces medicine.

Okay. All is right in the world. I have corrected the internet.
