Whats going on all. I have been lurking the forums and cannot find a solid answer to this question, so I wanted to see from experience when was the latest one took the DAT and was still early, as in come accepted Dec. 1st? I was thinking of taking it any time between mid july to the last day of July. I am hearing a while bunch of things, wanted to hear what you all have experienced.

I have also been hearing that ADA says it takes 2-4 weeks to send DAT results, but then I hear that it is electronic and schools can just upload it. Also I have heard that you can fax unofficial results to school as well. Anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance

three years before you apply

I took my DAT on July 5 and I got into school on Dec. 1st. The dean of admission at my school said to get the test done before mid july to be considered in the first batch. He said they will sit on his desk for 6 weeks until mid-august when they meet for the first time to start reviewing.

I took my DAT towards the end of August and got accepted Dec. 1st to my in-state school. You can submit your application before your DAT is complete. Most schools will ask you to have your DAT scores submitted by the time you turn-in their secondary application.

Taking it before August will give you the greatest flexibility from school to school (to be considered part of their first batch). More importantly, make sure you've already filled and sent out your AADSAS before then - sometime early July, or even better, in June.

For many schools, you can take the DAT in late August and still be considered part of their first batch. Depends on the school, really. My official DAT scores took about 3-4 weeks to reach all the schools I selected after I took it at the end of August, but you can fill in your unofficial scores on the AADSAS right after you've taken the DAT. This can give schools an early idea of what you scored.

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has announced the following for the 2011 AADSAS (dental) application cycle:

The ADEA AADSAS application cycle will begin on June 3, 2010.

Enhancements to the 2011 application cycle include:

Official DAT scores will be reported in the AADSAS application for the first time (until now, applicants have self-reported their DAT scores, with official scores being sent at applicant request to their designated dental schools); effective with this cycle, official DAT scores will be downloaded directly from the American Dental Association into the application.

So I don't think that there will be any more self-reporting of DAT scores on AADSAS. I wonder if ADA will still charge the $25 fee for each additional school. Also, if anyone knows how this will effect the timing issue, please let us know.

You bring up an interesting point sunscribble. Thank you all for the input thus far..

I am about to schedule the date I take the DAT and confused because I am hearing different things. My pre-health advisor is telling me to take it no later by mid july... so do you all think the 15th of july would be the latest? I want to just take it last week of july and fax an unofficial result before august 1st, do you all think this would work?

So how does it work if you submit your app before you take the DAT? Should I just put my old scores on the DAT scores section? How do the schools know that i am retaking (mid june) and will they even remember or WANT to consider my new score.

My main concern is that they will reject my app or not get my new scores and forget about me. Is it better to play it safe and submit mid june after im done with my retake? thanks

Because there is a place on the app where you can put the date that you will be taking the DAT. Your application is not complete until they get the new score and they can't reject you before that.

Really?

What if I have a score on file and want schools to wait for a retake?

August is probably the latest. Sept DAT has happened too. Expect some waitlist though. And you can only get in late if you've got a strong GPA and at least 20 DAT in my opinion.

Same process. You would indicate the date that you are going to take it on your AADSAS. Dental schools would not consider your application until they get the new scores.

Yeah they leave your application on the side and ignore it until your DAT comes in. They even end up neglecting it so keep calling and make sure they label your file as "completed" after 2-4 weeks of writing your DAT. I assumed they'd update mine but there's too many apps to look after that they ended up not even looking at mine until 2 months until I finally called!

Send everything before August. I took my DAT on August 1st and I believe that I was considered a late applicant although I was lucky enough to get 3 late interviews.
