Hi,
I was wondering what are the top residencies for pediatrics in your opinion that have the best intern-year incentives (call schedule, rotations, vacations, parking, etc)? Thanks.

Obviously, its all relative, and you're gonna work hard no matter where you go.

Of all the places I went to, Portland (OHSU) sort of stuck out in my head in terms of nicest intern year. Not that its easy, but I think they only had 5-6 months of call intern year. They do a bell curve of call schedule, so your 2nd year there is pretty intense (10 call months) but intern and 3rd year have less call.

I've also heard that Ohio State has q6 call, but when you are on-call, its intense because you're covering several services.

I don't remember any major differences in vacation schedule or parking, but some places its free, others not. But I don't remember those details.

USC has a pretty cush schedule intern year, and they pay a surprising amount of money for your salary (at least compared to the UC schools....).

Most programs give you 4-5 weeks of vacation depending on when you start (June or July), so there's not much variation there. Most also give you free parking, except for big university-affiliated schools, from what I've encountered, and that's only when you're at that campus.

But I've only interviewed at California schools, so that holds true only for them. I have detailed charts and stuff with all the information in your original post for the California schools, so if you want 'em, PM me.

Just to clarify, when you say USC do you mean CHLA? Or does USC have its own program... Because I think CHLA has a pretty challenging schedule.

Most programs I saw the residents work hard, I'd say the hardest working house staff were at CHLA, Columbia, UCSF, Seattle. Off the top of my head the softer programs (but by NO means easy) were at UCSD, Yale (2nd and 3rd yrs not 1st yr), UCLA at times.

please correct me if I'm wrong things have really gotten jarbled in my mind

No, I mean USC. They have their own program, and it's pretty sweet!!

CHLA definitely has one of the most challenging schedules, as does CHOC. They work pretty darn hard.

I agree UCSD and UCLA have a lighter schedule, as well....

Do you know more details about UCSD? I know they are q5 for part of the time, but what else makes it a softer program?

I recall the residents saying that although you have hard blocks you have lots of easy blocks as an intern. When you're on the floor you'll work like any other intern, but they only spend 3 blocks on the floor, 2 blocks NICU, and 1 block ER. As a first year you'll do outpatient, adolescent, community, and newborn rotations all of which I imagine to be 'lighter' rotations.

Hi Jendizzle,

do you know anything about Loma Linda? what are you thoughts?
i submitted a question on the other post too. just in case 🙂

I know a decent amount about Loma Linda....do you have anything in particular you want to know more about? I don't have my spreadsheets with all my info on this computer, but I can look stuff up and post an answer tonight if you give me some more specific questions.

If you're just wondering about my gut feeling on the program....well, unfortunately, I don't even remember what that was, haha. Everything's all mushed together now. I do have it written down, but I'd have to look that up, too 😀 I'd probably forget my name, too, if I didn't write it down.

Thanks for the reply. I am so confused!!!!:scared:
actually, I am interested to know, same old same old, are they overworked? Is the program balanced b/w pts, didactics, etc. I am concerned about their low board pass rate. Also, for fellowships, can you have outside electives in the places that do have fellowships?
thanks,
good luck. 2 days until ROL deadline:scared:

I'm not sure how much help I'm going to be, since I don't know much about most of that stuff....

They did not SEEM overworked to me at all. The girls who gave us the tour were super-happy, carefree sort of people. That could just be how they are, but I took it to mean they weren't overworked or overstressed, and they didn't say they felt that way when I asked them. That being said, I've heard murmurs of them being overworked on these forums and by hear-say, so maybe someone else can weigh in on if that's true and why??

I don't know about the didactics/pt balance; every program I interviewed with seemed to have morning report, noon conf, and a smattering of lectures here and there, so I stopped taking note of it.

Yeah, the low board pass rate was worrisome. I forget how the PD rationalized it....something about a class of hardcore partiers that year (or maybe I'm confusing it with another program now....). Anyway. I also didn't take note of the pass rates and such with each program because I like to think that I'll pass regardless of how everyone else does. Probably overconfident, but if the pass rate is like 30%, I like to think I'll be in that small percentage who pass. 😎

Most programs seem to be really flexible in letting you do away electives at potential fellowship programs, and I don't remember this one being any different. I'm not interested in fellowships, so I didn't specifically ask, but I distinctly remember every program I visited gave a list of the places their grads went for fellowship and expressed a desire to help in whatever way possible. If that means going to CHOP for a couple months, I'm SURE they'd let you do it because it'll boost their stats in the end.

So, yeah. Hopefully, someone else can give you more concrete answers to your questions. That's just what I remember and what I've found to be true with most programs.

Good luck!! ROL deadline tomorrow, good luck on getting it done!! :luck:

Thanks a lot 🙂👍

Hi,

MSU-KCMS (very small) intern year has 3 weeks vacation and 5 days off around Xmas or New Years. 1 month call free. 4 outpatient months. 3 inpatient months. Free parking, free food (with a coffee bar - FREE lattes!). One NICU month, one nursery month, one ER month, other months vary (often cards +/or child psych). Interns get a full day of continuity clinic that is protected (never post call) on the same day of the week (except in hospital months, then it's only 1/2 day). Call schedule is 8 calls on inpatient, and it varies on other months - can be as low as 4 if there are a lot of people on that month taking call, can be as high as 8. 5 hours of lectures on Friday that are PROTECTED; no patient work or calls during this time. No notes need to be written on Friday mornings on Floor, just on ICU months.
It was BY FAR the most lax intern place I saw as a med student applying.

OK, kids, I'm bumping this thread up.

Does anybody out there have those peds charts that I made? I immediately purged them from my computer in a post-match celebratory move, and now I have a request from someone who would like to look at them for next year.

Can someone PM me if you have them? I'll give you my email, and you can send it back my way (or just email them to me if you already have my email). Thanks!! 😀

what charts?

what charts?

They're charts I made that I gave to a lot of people last year who PMed me....

Anyhow -- I've gotten a lot of PMs asking for them lately. Sorry, I don't have 'em anymore. I got rid of them all in a fit of post-match day hysteria. Sorry, guys. 🙁

If you have any specific questions about Cali peds residency programs, lemme know. Especially if it's about UCI....

anyone with the charts can you post on the forum, thanks

Hey all I do not envy any one applying it was a stressful process. Anyway I am an intern at UCSD and I will have to say so far this year has been ok. Our ward months are hard but we are q5, still long hours though. I have not done NICU but I have heard those two months are not too fun either and are q4. We also have one other q4 month in a SCN. So it isn't too bad, the rest are jeopardy call which means you only get called if someone calls in sick or something. So while we only have one call free month its pretty good. Anyway good luck everyone!!
