Any comments on LDP Vs. PBL pathways. At the interview at LECOM, one of the MS-II student in LDP pathway was really lashing out at PBL pathway. But faculty, admission counsellor seems to talk otherwise. I am in a dilemma that if I get accepted in PBL pathway and not in LDP, should I accept it.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks as always.

here is a thread started in the osteopathic forum that you might find enlightening.

This is a nice article about the independent study pathway at LECOM. I found this on PUBMED http://www.jaoa.org/cgi/reprint/100/11/713 and it helps clarify some of the questions with ISP. If you are going to interview at LECOM I would educate yourself with this article so that you can make a good decision as to what pathway you might want to pursue at LECOM b/c you have to make the decision the day of the interview.

I have a question for the PBL pathway students. How do they learn what things like the lungs, heart, and stomach should sound like. Or what an enlarged liver feels like? Is this something that is not taught in the pre-clinical class.. do they have to learn this while on rotations

I am an MSIII at Lecom Erie who chose the PBL pathway. Unfortunately, I frequently find that LDP students make negative comments about the PBL pathway. There is so little overlap between the two programs that you can't really trust their opinions about PBL. (I think that they're just jealous that we get to study in our pajamas, and they have to dress up every day!!!) 😉 😀

I'm not trying to start a flame war here, but PBL's board pass rates have been better than LDP's for 2 years in a row. In our class, their was a real sense of teamwork (most of the time.) Honestly, I couldn't have been happier with the PBL program, but it was the right learning style for me. Just remember that you get out of medical school exactly what you put into it - regardless of which pathway you choose.

As far as preclinical education, we met every Friday for 2 years to learn the art of taking a good history and performing a good physical. It apparently worked, because on my 4th rotation (a colorectal surgery rotation), my attending said that I did a better job with H&P's than any of the 1st year residents that he had rotate with him. After the first week of the rotation, I was seeing all of his new patients by myself and presenting to him.

My best advice... don't worry. Lecom will take care of you and get you ready for what you need to know to survive on rotations. Good luck with everything. If you have any questions about PBL, feel free to PM me. :luck:
