Hi everyone!
Looking for advice on whether it would look bad to leave a board position?
I've had it for 2.5 years and for next year, I rather spend my time in other activities but I am afraid of looking uncommitted.
Constructive advice appreciated! Thank you.

As long as you fill it with something else meaningful and are able to articulate that beyond just "i just wanted to", I don't think it will be a red flag. If you can bear it, I'd suggest bearing it. Or contact the schools you want to apply to and talk with someone on admissions and ask them directly.

Surely they know not all positions will be for 4 years even if you start as a freshman. I wouldn't worry too much about switching it out for something else meaningful and of the ~same hour commitment.

I assume we're talking about a club executive board? I think 2.5 years is plenty commitment and longer than the majority of applicants will spend with any one club. Don't stick around in things you're not getting something out of just to look good. Explore new things as well, it sounds like you're ready for a change and have given what you could to your previous organization. This is a chance to learn something new and challenging.

Yes, it's a club board. So it sounds like it should be fine?
I would like to spend more time volunteering and in my lab, while I feel that I have already contributed and learned much from the club and want to shift focus
I'm reluctant to "bear" it if it isn't necessary because it adds on stress I don't really need

I think the duration has been long enough and assuming since you have been there for 2.5 years, your superior thinks well of you. You should be fine to switch it out for another EC that needs some more work in your app. Good luck

I would ditch it if you aren't enjoying it. Unless you that club is the very rare club that actually does very impressive things, rather than just helping to run the run of the mill club, it probably isn't going to help your application any further. You've shown duration at some level of leadership, if you want to fill that time working on getting in more research I say go for it.
