They did give us an essay to read while we were waiting for our interviews. Then while we were waiting the guide talk about everything under the sun, where to eat, were to drink, were to pick your nose, ect, but the key is to not forget about the essay. While the tour guide is asking all these meaningless questions, review the essay in your head, maybe even go over it again, note the changes, the "jist", the conclusion, the theme of the essay. Don;t worry about all the little details, but know it well enough. They will ask you about it in the interview, its not a huge deal, they just asked me to summerize the essay. But, it could be a tripping block if your not on your toes. Also, at the end be sure to tell them that they are your number one choice!!! Generally it was the best presentation I have seen so far, ohh yeah don;t be late either. map it out the night before, Best to stay in Erie also, the hotels are dirt cheap (40$ a night),

I'm a bit nervous, and still working out the bugs on some of the posted interview questions. Would you think scribbling some points down in a note book would be inapropriate? thanks henry

i was thinking the same thing as you when i was prepping for the interview (write down some notes for answers) but i decided not to. i did not want to have any scripted answers for them because i wanted to show them that i was talking about myself and not reading about myself. however, i did prep ahead of time and had ideas for answers thought out for some of the more popular questions (why do?, leadership qualities?, etc). also, i did have questions written down but that was mainly to check off during the presentation and tour of the school so i wouldn't ask the interviewer questions about stuff i just heard the answer to. i know it's easy to get anxious and nervous but honestly, this is a pretty easy interview and very laid back. just be yourself and, most importantly, honest with the interviewers.

I am trying to decide between the PBL and the regular LDP..

I’m LDP. In LDP you receive all your info from PowerPoint. If you don’t want to read a text book, you don’t have to. I personally rarely have time to read a text book, even if I wanted to. PBP, from want I understand, has a lot more text book reading. They meet with their group, come up with learning objectives for the case that they are presented, and then hit the books.

I just kept reviewing the essay they had us read in my head during the waiting period. Remember, they know your grades, they know your personal essay, they know everything that you have put on your application. They just want to know you, your personality, and they will like you. Be yourself, smile and we will see you in September.

Golden girl- I have to weigh in on the PBL side. Having another career I have learned that solving problems always involves other people. I think they have found that PBL is a great way to learn not only the book material, but the skills in working with other professionals. I was never crazy about lectures, I only learned if the prof. was really good. I learned from doing the work or reading the text. I also beleive that in PBL you still have access to all the notes from the lectures and you can sit in on lectures if you need too. There is also a large portion that is still lecture courses.
And also note that I beleive that Harvard teaches significantly in a PBL type format. Something to consider.

One thing that I have learned from this forum is that everyone is different, so pick whats right for you, and good luck with your decision.

I will be attending LECOM-Erie this fall (2005) and was wondering what the normal daily routine was. Also if any of you have children what are the elementary school schedule hours like, as well as the availability (& affordability) of after school care. I will most likely be bringing my eldest daughter (age 9) due to personal conflicts between her mother and her which is adversely affecting her education in TN. Is the PBL program easier to work around a family life situation? I know personally I can learn well in either program, but I do love the benefit of teachers essentially lecturing about the information they plan to ask on tests, without having to read all the less relevant material. Any input would be great.

Hmm....cannot tell you too much about childcare et al, but will say that you would probably benefit from being in either the PBL or the ISP pathways. You will have more time away from campus and might not have to pay for childcare everyday (possibly 1-2 days/week). I wouldnt sweat the differences between all the pathways, they are all different and people do well in courses and on boards regardless, more up to the individual rather than the pathway. Regarding text books, I wouldnt buy too many of the "text"...rather use more of the board review books. They are shorter, written more in an outline forms.

I called admissions office the other day and was told PBL is now closed and has a waiting list This sucks, but heck hopefully some of those holding the spots will decide to switch to other programs. I decided to transfer to PBL so I can bring my daughter up there with me but will be difficult in LEC based so I believe. Take care

Youll still have no problem with your daughter. Your classes wont start until after shes off to school, and youll more than likely be done when she is off. I tell this to everyone....although lecture is "mandatory", it really isnt. I rarely showed up to afternoon lectures (NEVER second semester MSII), never got in trouble, and still got a great Deans letter. If you have to leave for your daughter, do it. Now there will be times when you cant (ie labs, tests,etc) but itll be the same if youre in PBL.
Dont sweat it....youll be fine.

Unless they have changed it, it is not a MATCH list. Just a list of people who are looking for roommates. It may contain MSII, MSIII and MSIVs. It may also contain people who already have places there and others who havent found a place to live.
You might not get the list for quite a few months, considering they are still interviewing. However, they do send one out and then update it later...
There are plenty of places to live, and if renting, id recommend townhouses by either Maleno or Pastore. Both have places within a mile and lots of students in the units.

thanks for the info stomper! I didn't realize that it would probably be a list of people looking (kinda like the "roommate" needed adds in the newspaper) for a roommate. Maybe "us" new LECOMers could use SDN as a tool to facilitate our search for roommates or properties for sale and rent 🙂

i remember them saying that we would receive a list sometime in the spring towards the end of the application cycle. i for one am looking for a roommate to reduce some of the costs of living but i'd also like someone to keep me from going insane when studying. either way, i'm going out to erie in march to look for some places and hopefully get my name on a list for an apt or townhouse.

For some odd reason, I have been thinking of some sort of sports team. Like a flag football or ultimate frisbee team, something we can get our frustration out on.

Maybe we can have the first Osteopathic football team, like division 9 or something. Maybe we can play against the grammer schools in the area and maybe win once in a while.

Family First Sports has many different leagues in different skill levels, of flag football, soccer, hockey, basketball, softball, volleyball, etc. Also decent gyms around....Id recommend "American Fitness", for those that are serious about working out. It is cheaper than anyplace (equal to the Y), and is owned and operated by a bodybuilder. It is also a few blocks away from school. I would stay away from Nautilis. It is a ripoff for students....

Orientation usually begins the Wed before that first Monday in August and runs from Wed-Sun. So you essentially begin in July 😀

Might not work....lots of ice on the bay (usually completely covered), and the lake side....might have to walk quite a ways out to get there....

Weather, Comming from rochester, Erie's like a summer paradise. I look forward to the 5 degree difference.



Uh....coming from Rochester, I should warn you that Erie is alot crappier in the winter. You should look forward to much colder (and much windier) conditions in the winter. 🙂 Peach Street is like a wind tunnel. And I think there is one plow for all of Erie county 🙂 But the summers are beautiful. Good luck with your first year. Where in Roch are you from?

i haven't checked anything out yet but i will be going there in april. i found lecom's sga website by accident one day but i found it helpful in narrowing down where i should be looking. here's the link: http://www.lecomsga.com/Pages/incoming_students.htm check out the 2007 survey because it lists students' comments about some complexes.
