Hey guys so I wasn't really sure where to put this since I wanted current students to look at this and answer but, I got my matriculation package today for the LECOM PostBacc and it said that I must use a windows PC. How strict is this policy, like will many of the softwares I need not work on my mac? Also the dress code states shirt and tie, do you think I could get away with a polo every once in a while?

Ask the school if they can put you in touch with any current students, or post in the school specific forum.

You can use a Mac. I'd say a 1/3 of my class uses one. Also, the dress code is not very lenient. You have to wear a tie, no exceptions. The only time we don't is to OPP or H&P labs.

Knowing LECOM I'd assume they'd just hold the post-bacc students to the same standard so unfortunately the "dress code" is what it is.... basically shirt and tie for the guys. Some wore those short sleeve dress shirts with ties but just a polo won't cut it, at least here it didn't.

And we also have a lot of mac users in our class. Unless things have changed there wasn't any specific testing software that they used that was PC only, but you may want to check with current students in your program there to be sure.

If you're a girl, you could get away with black jeans and a sweatshirt. I see it happen constantly.

If you're a guy, without that dress shirt & tie you won't get very far

Mac's and Linux PC's are perfectly fine--just don't expect help from IT if you have problems with your computer. They'll try to help you but won't be able to guarantee you anything.

And as for the dress code, guys have pretty much no wiggle room at all--it's a shirt and tie every day. Polos will absolutely *not* fly, and security will most likely stop you at the door and send you home to change. The most "casual" you can go, outside of H&P and OPP labs, is unbuttoning your top button and having the tie loose. Shoes seem to be a pretty lenient area too--just don't try to sneak in with flip flops on or something.

So everyone agrees short sleeves and a tie is cool? I'll be at LECOM-B and it gets damn hot down here, I don't know if I can deal with long sleeves outside of dec and jan.

Should be. There are 1 or 2 professors that do the whole short sleeve dress shirt with tie thing, and I've seen the occasional student pull it off as well.

I went to a private middle school that required shirt + tie every day. I used to wear short sleeves + ties. Then one day I was explaining our dress code to someone at another school and explained that short sleeves and ties were OK, to which they replied, "You mean like the manager at a McDonalds?" And to this day, I have yet to wear another short sleeve buttondown with a tie.....

I don't know - I prefer the laid-back McDonald's manager look to the two-bit wannabe businessman or mafioso looks that some of my male colleagues affect! :lame:

Don't wear a short sleeve dress shirt with a tie... As stated above, it just looks bad and is pretty much considered a fashion taboo these days unless you're a) old or b) the manager of a McDonald's (although LECOM has no objection to it as far as the dress code goes.) Wear a long sleeve shirt and roll up the sleeves. Solves the too hot problem and looks much, much better IMO.

I agree that rolled up sleeves looks way more badass; however, who really cares? Wear whatever is easiest and most comfortable

How many days of class with PBL?

I'm a LECOM student and former LECOM post bacc student. You could NEVER EVER get away with a polo shirt. I never even knew they said no macs. A ton of people have them in my class and they never seem to have any problems.

Oh and a short sleeved dress shirt is fine. The kid that sits beside me wears them frequently and never had an issue.

You can get away with a polo shirt AND a tie together. It looks ridiculous but I've seen people wear it

Extremely strict. It gave me a bad feeling when I was there and the thought that I had to wear a shirt and tie everyday just to sit in class?

No thanks. I realize it shouldn't be a big deal, but you don't dress up to sit in a lecture. When dealing with patients? Yes that's when you should dress up.

You even have to dress up to go to their library!!!!

🙁

I do need to add that after 5:30PM on weekdays and all day on the weekend you're allowed in the building wearing casual clothes, which means you can study in sweats and a hoody after hours if you choose to.

What about sneakers?Does the color matter? Can you wear sneakers or do you have to wear formal shoes?

Yes, that was my impression. Got into LECOM brandenton but turned it down because the dress code seemed crazy. And the whole no water thing really bothered me.

That dress code seems pretty intense. Can you mix it up at least with some bow-ties or Colonel Sanders-esque Bolo ties?

LECOM'ers wear scrubs though in the cadaver lab, right?
During my interview a student wore a bright purple bow tie, so I think they're fine with those

When I went to LECOM scrubs were NOT allowed during anatomy. I wore a T-shirt and khaki pants with my lab coat.

Bow-ties are fine. Quite a few males in my class wear them-- as well as some faculty members.

I frequently see males with sleeves rolled up. Short-sleeves with a tie are fine.

I don't study in our library, but I've heard of people sneaking into it sans tie-- technically against the rules, though, and you'd definitely get caught trying to go to class without one.

I got an interview here. It's so much cheaper than other DO schools! And it's 2 hours from home. My friend who attended got a radiology residency, so you can obviously achieve success here if you work hard.

No one noticed this thread was brought back from the grave in 2011?:dead:😱 For all we know this information might not be accurate anymore!

Way to bump an almost 4 year old thread (and see, now you made me do it). Clearly you missed the 20 others or so of people complaining about LECOM dress code.

Also, dress code is only in effect until 5:30pm and only required on campus.

No sneakers, except after hours.

Bow ties are fine. I've seen people get away with Bolos, but I have no idea if those are officially OK.

After visiting many medical schools, I have to admit, LECOM students looked VERY professional. Visited other medical schools as a guest and not into medical students attending class in hoodies and jeans! Want a first class profession as a doctor? Might as well learn to dress like one.

Hoodies and jeans? Anything but hoodies and jeans! What slobs!

wow, that wouldnt fly in australia, sure we will put on our business casual and buisiness wear for clinical days ... but not to go to uni, dude no way, people dress however they want for uni ... i get mistaken for being an arts student in my crazy fashion, see thru clothes, crazy coloured hair and tatts

Are you really in a hurry to look like a slob when everyone else around you looks great? You will stand out...in a bad way....even if you dont get caught. I'll admit that the 1-2 minutes outside on the way from my car to the building were rough. After that it's a comfy 68 degrees inside.

Interesting you say this since all Australians were school uniforms through year 12. Should be used to it. Plus Uni in AUS is the same as undergrad in the US. Medical school is considered grad school - after Uni.

after so long in ugly uniforms we cant wait to escape them, plus nobody wants to dress all stuffy just for classes, you see lots of casual clothing at uni both undergrad and postgrad (i think postgrad wear more sweatpants tbh)

This is true. But you have to understand that the Aus system and US system are structured different. Medical school is AFTER Uni so LECOM expects professional attire for a graduate program. Everyone in US dresses casual in university before that.
