Hey everyone,
I am extremely lucky to have just received an acceptance to LECOM-Erie and I couldn't be more excited. I just have a question regarding VCOM and how it compares to LECOM-Erie as I have an interview scheduled for the end of this month and I am trying to decide if it is worthwhile for me to even attend the interview. It would not be cheap for me to get there but I am totally willing to spend the money.

I like Erie because of the tuition and I know the students have a lot of success on all of the exams and seem to have successful matches (though I know that there is no way to really interpret the match results).

From what I know about VCOM, and this could be incorrect, is that is in a little bit more of a rural area and they push more towards rural medicine and it is seen through their rotation sites. That's not necessarily a turn off for me but I feel like its something to consider.

I believe VCOM has the same professional dress and mandatory attendance so there wouldn't be any change on that front.

Thank you to anyone that can share some more info about VCOM and correct me if I'm wrong about anything!

Here is my way to interpret the match results. First of all, consider if students are matching into a wide variety of residencies outside of primary care. Secondly, are they matching into major acgme accredited programs? Let's face it, by the time we (class of 2023) apply for residencies, those will be the only ones available with exception of some AOA that managed to get accredited. Therefore, the second point is a big deal. The first one is not if primary care of your goal.

With that said, it appears that Lecom has the edge in getting more students matched into a wide variety of specialties and at major/respectable acgme residencies. Oh and that tuition tho.

Hey. I was wondering if there is a way to understand the types of matches - Is there some resource that discusses this. I have heard ACGME, AOA, NRMP - but I dont understand them. How do we know which residency match program will accept either USMLE or COMLEX?

I’m not sure. The two bodies are merging, but I’m an MD student so I’m not really sure how that will affect DO. There’s definitely some threads on this already though if you want to do some digging
From my understanding with the upcoming merger programs have to accept COMLEX scores. I wouldn't hold me to it but from the questions I've asked at DO programs I've interviewed with that was the common answer.
